Está indicado para el tratamiento inicial y urgente de una herida abierta en el tórax, ya sea por arma blanca, arma de fuego, lesiones por accidentes o impactación de cuerpo extraño. Cuando la presión intratorácica es negativa (en la inspiración) el parche se bloquea para impedir que entre aire a través del orificio torácico. Cuando se espira y la presión es positiva, el parche permite la salida del aire acumulado en el espacio pleural, para favorecer la distensión pulmonar. Los objetivos del parche de Asherman son permitir la salida de aire por la herida torácica impidiendo a la vez que entre aire. Con esto, disminuye la dificultad respiratoria, favoreciendo la distensión pulmonar.
