She and Loelia arrived in the early morning by plane, Loelia insisting that she wouldn’t be in the way. Ann knew her friend would find ways to amuse herself while she went off with Ian, but it still annoyed her that she had to be accompanied for appearances sake. She adored Loelia, of course, but she would much prefer to be meeting Ian alone.
“Consider me an ornament.” Loelia murmured through her cigarette. Taking a drag and blowing out the smoke, she spoke again. “It shouldn’t be all that different from usual.”
Rolling her eyes at the remark, Ann spoke a short thank you to the person carrying their bags. It was only a week, but with all the luggage between the two of them it looked as though they were staying for a few months.
As they approached the house, she spotted Ian in the distance, and she looked to Loelia with a pleading gaze. Having an idea of what Ann wanted, she nodded, taking another drag of her cigarette.
“I’ll hang back for a few moments.” she agreed, which prompted a smile from Ann who wordlessly continued onwards.
Approaching on her own, leaving the others behind, her features wore a soft, pleased gaze. There had been moments of distance with them before, but this had been the longest. The two of them had written letters, but they hadn’t physically seen each other in a year. Not since the day before she married Esmond.
Ann said nothing, unsure of what to say, but her heart was racing, and she wanted nothing more than to run to him, leap into his arms, and kiss him. She refrained, however, wanting to see his reaction first. His letters these days were often too good to be true, so sweet and romantic. If nothing else, her expression showed her longing for him as she got close.
