M: A person who got you into a fandom and what fandom they pulled you in to.

This is a good question because I'm like a weird skittish cat and have to be tricked into getting into something. Lol. I actually think all my major fandoms have been mostly coincidence. I got a Harry Potter book from a scholastic book order. I got into Doctor Who randomly after clicking a link to some pirate streaming site in 2008 and watching Blink without any context. Tales from the Borderlands came with the Telltale bundle I purchased when I got my ps4 because it was the cheapest way to purchase all the twdg games. I watched Arcane because Tumblr told me there were lesbians.

I guess maybe the most clean-cut one is Life is Strange, which I played the day it released on Mac at @thereisnolaughterinschool's insistence. Good call. Gonna play it again tomorrow.

W: 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms.

In no particular order and using a selection of fandoms where I can easily name one lol:

Honestly I don't know... I'm not like a closeted Reylo stan or something. I liked Mako and Korra! I wouldn't say I was like, secretive about it though, just sort of... was only averagely interested and my interest tapered off as my rage towards the show grew lol.

can you watch better call saul without watching breaking bad? i have no interest in that show. but you're slowly wearing me down with your reblogs about bcs.

I feel like an influencer. yes you can watch bcs on its own! if you’ve seen breaking bad you get a little added dimension from the pain of knowing (some of) what’s coming, but it’s not necessary for the plot. I personally barely remember anything from breaking bad so I kind of feel like I’m also a testament to this

'This' is exactly how I see Mulder and Scully. They're the m&s of my favorite fanfics. That episode is perfect but like also they should've kissed.

100% agree. Their relationship status is so inconsistent in Season 11 but I feel like where they are in This is the most in character. They are so comfortable with each other while still being adorable, and basically co-habitating. (Thanks to the line “we can’t go to our home” OUR home!)

thoughts on the youth thinking they should be able to make money from fanfiction? ;)

lol I feel like Generation Z never had to post fic on fanfic.net with a disclaimer along the lines of: “I don’t own Harry Potter! I am only a poor college student, please don’t sue me!”

The thing is, fanfiction is still kind of a legally grey area. These characters that we write about are, for the most part, copyrighted properties. They are not ours. For the most part, fanfiction writing has become well tolerated across the board, but that was not always the case (see Diana Gabaldon and Outlander series). But otherwise fanfiction is pretty well known and well tolerated. Which I think is great! Unless you have a burning desire to write Outlander fic, you can pretty much write as much fic as you want for Riverdale without worrying that RAS and the CW are going to pursue you for it.

Still, the key is that fanfiction is a hobby, we do it for free. We are not profiting off someone else’s work. As soon as you profit off someone else’s work, I don’t think it is a legal gray area. If that author or rights-holder decides to make an example out of you, I don’t think you will win that lawsuit. To me, its analogous to opening a fast-food burger restaurant called MacRonald’s and putting up golden arches as your logo. McDonald’s will shut you down for that, and few would dispute MacDonald’s rights to do so.

Realistically, is Marvel or the CW or Star Wars or whatever going to spend the time and effort required to go after you if you are selling fanfiction for $30.00 a pop? Probably not. But IMO, I think they could, and I personally would not take the risk.

I do think there are some legally gray areas in between all of this. If you write fic in return for a donation to charity (which I have done), is that legal? TBH I don’t know. Probably no rights-holder would come after you for that from a PR perspective. 

Fanfiction.net now has advertisements up all over its website. So they are profiting off the work of fanfic authors and indirectly profiting off the work of rights-holders. I find this dubious. Ao3 does not do this.

5. what’s your comfort show?

Well sometimes it’s whatever show is currently my favorite which changes, but the ones I consistently go back to rewatch and find comforting are how I met your mother, friends, and parks and rec

28. who would be your dream cameo on your favourite show?

hmmm this is a hard one. Partially b/c I don’t have 1 favorite show so this is really just what came to me first, but I’m currently watching Dr. Quinn and honestly an X-Files crossover ep where Mulder and Scully solve an x-file in Colorado Springs and Scully and Dr. Quinn being their awesome, strong, dr selves together would have been the best! I can totally picture it and I bet it would have happened if they were on the same network 

50. what’s one TV cliche you love?

I feel like this is basically synonymous with my fave fanfic tropes, soooo mutual pining/slow burn romance and found family are two of the biggest
