Prologue
Dunerell is an word from the ancient Umbran language meaning “gifted”. The Dunerell are beings that possess special abilities or powers outside the ability of most humans. Research by Sorcerer Layden showed that the power to perform these abilities emanated from a gland she called the meras. In Dunerell the gland is active, a healthy glowing green. Humans also have a meras, though it is inactive. Dunerell groups have rituals, spells, and potions for activating the meras in Humans, though it is a gift rarely given without provocation. Being gifted has been a blessing, a curse and a point of contention throughout the history of Oerties. Dunerell have fought wars, battles and conflicts resulting from disagreements with humans and with each other. Most of these disagreements boil down to power and who "should" have it. Of the wars fought throughout the history of the realm two forever altered the course of Oerties and it’s inhabitants. The Splinter Rising forever changed Dunerell society breaking what was a united population into fragments vying for control. Waring factions, skirmishes and societal dissent eventually resulted in The Caster Wars that raged for over two hundred years.
In the year 1135, the young King Lucjan of the house of Carwynn inherited a troubled throne. The vaults of the Spellcaster realm were empty and the population was dwindling due to an endless war and an illness that cut short the lives of those that managed to avoid the sword. Lucjan was the youngest child of King Sulien, who earned the epithet “The Blight” for the endless death and war that plagued his reign. The young King, then a Prince, had been tutored in the arts, music and literature, with no expectation of inheriting the throne. As was expected when the Prince came of age, he was sent to battle. What he witnessed changed him. His older siblings were all taken one by one, some by the sword some by the illness. This left him as the unlikely heir, but one that had no interest in continuing the cycle.
He was rushed home upon the death of his father. Once crowned, the young King looked to restore peace to his realm. He met with the rulers of each of surrounding realms, inviting them to his castle to broker a treaty. Most of the other rulers were open to meeting, their coffers and streets were just as empty as that of the Spellcasters.
