Where Fischtown got its name from - the fishing harbor!
It's still one of the biggest fishing harbors in Europe and the sailors started calling the city "Fischtown" because of it. The name is pronounced like "fishtown", the fish is just spelled the German way. There are some theories, but nobody really knows why.
The "New Harbor" is right in the middle of the city and the heart of the "Havenwelten", the harbor worlds, and most of the sights are located around it. One of the newest highlights is the full-rigged museum ship "Schulschiff Deutschland" which was moved to Bremerhaven from Bremen this year (2021). You can visit the ship or even sleep in one of the cabins.
Probably the most iconic building in town - the Atlantic Hotel Sail City and the Klimahaus behind it.
The building is meant to resemble a hoisted sail in the wind and there's also a public observation platform on top of it.
One of the best ways to enjoy the fresh breeze coming from the sea is taking walk along the dikes. In the summer, a lot of people meet up here and sit on the grass, having a picknick, hanging out with friends or having a beer.
Technically, Bremerhaven is located at the riverside of the Weser and it becomes officially North Sea just outside of the northern city limits. At the same time, Bremerhaven is also officially called "Seestadt" meaning "Seatown" and considered the only major city at the coast of the North Sea.
