Notgeld of the Week #31! (2/10/2026)

A nice nautical note from the north of Germany!

50 Pf. from the city of Bremerhaven, Lehe, and Geestemünde.

the sailor on the obverse, holding a banknote and a pipe, is saying "Wat sind hüt Fofftig Penn?" meaning "what are fifty Pfennig even worth?", like before, poking fun at the lack of buying power of the note.

Bremerhaven was founded in 1827, not even a century before this notgeld was printed, as a port for the city of Bremen upstream along the Wesser. Bremerhaven is still a major port in Germany, serving the north sea with Hamburg and Wilhelmshaven. Those familiar with the states of Germany will know that Bremen is one of the three city-states in the country, however unlike Hamburg and Berlin, the state also includes the exclave of Bremerhaven despite being 20 miles away from Bremen!
