All she had grown used to was the buzzing of lights.
Olivia sat at the curved glass wall of a massive tank. It took up nearly half of the dim room, considering that the area wasn’t much larger than a basic bedroom. Her brows knit as she glared down at her lap, where she held a clipboard and paper scrawled full of notes. Her lab coat lays draped over the back of her seat, and she’s just wearing the Ock suit that made her so infamous to some.
She wasn’t having the greatest day, that much was sure. Every time she breathed in, the salty air almost stung, and the small size of the room didn’t help at all. The water of the tank cast her in a sharp blue light, one that could remind anyone but her of a lingering sadness. Her hair was frizzed up by the humidity of the air, and like always, her head hurt from the overwhelming nature of her position.
Just before she wanted to bury her face into her hands, a shadow looms behind her. One of… Those.
The lab studied aquatic life forms, after all, and this one had always stuck in Olivia’s mind as one of the first found.
Built like a mermaid, she was part seal, of all things! Olivia had seen fish, cnidarians, even an otter, but nothing like this.
She floats quietly right above Olivia’s head, her bottom… Tail half barely moving. From her elbows, similar fur covers her forearms, and rather than hands she has paw-like flippers, one of which is gently pressed up against the glass. She doesn’t exactly have a “need” for clothes, as speckled grey fur covers up to her collarbone.
Whatever semblance of a hairstyle she had was swayed by the water, bangs barely over her forehead and her hair afloat behind her. Her nose twitches once, the nostrils closed like a real seal’s, all before Olivia turns to look back at her.
A slight smile graces the doctor’s face, and she leans back into her chair with one arm on the back. Her brows rise and she tilts her head.
“Well?” She lets out a dark little chuckle. “You’re free from tests today, didn’t you realize?”
The seal woman’s eyes widen, and she retracts the flipper that was on the glass. She simply stares for a moment, before swimming up to the tank’s surface. It may not be large, but half of the water’s surface was covered in a small rocky spot under a heating lamp, like a lizard’s enclosure. The floor of the tank is covered in soft sand, with strands of kelp gently swaying.
She takes a deep breath when she breaches, and looks down with those wide eyes. Her hair is stuck around her face, and her whiskers become visible when she’s seen above water.
“Really?” The seal woman asks. She speaks quite quietly, which makes sense, considering that she definitely doesn’t talk much.
Olivia looks directly up, her hair falling back in gorgeous rivulets of brown and violet. Her glasses fall back a little, and her smile grows. “Mhm, really,”
Maybe she liked having something so strange to talk to, she had made a habit of coming in during breaks after all. Maybe she found the thing pretty, seeing the humanity in this one, even if she didn’t see that in the others. It was a strange feeling, all of them were. If anything, this woman was the only reason she still put up with her job.
They stare for a moment, that stupid smug smile still on Olivia’s face, until the doctor lights up. “Oh!” She exclaims to herself, quickly sitting up.
The seal tilts her head before submerging once again, doing a little flip before coming face to face with Olivia.
“It’s tiring calling you Subject 1…” She pauses, glancing back down to her clipboard. “1620, that’s it. You need a name! A proper name.”
Subject 1620 blinks a few times, bringing her face closer to the glass to try and catch a glimpse of the papers.
“All the others have names, they’ve got other lives! But you,” Olivia turns and walks to the wall, where a short set of stairs leads up to the top of the tank. “You’re special, it’s odd.”
When the subject surfaces, she sees that Olivia hadn’t even used the stairs. From the metal harness on her back, one miraculously strong actuator pulled her up, and she now next to the net-covered top of the tank. The seal woman barely surfaces, though, only her face pokes out of the water as Olivia smiles down.
“Do you have a name? One we never knew?” She asks, crossing her arms.
And then, the mermaid rises, hoisting herself up and taking a “seat” at the rocky shore spot. She folds her flippers over her lap, before shaking her head.
“Lose…” She begins, before shaking her head once and pausing to collect her words. “Lost it, never had one.” She brings a flipper up to run its claws through her hair, a little stim to try and calm herself.
That’s where Olivia’s act drops. The actuator retreats into her back and she just stands there for a moment.
How does one lose a name?
By being stuck in a tank like a fish at a pet store, that might be it.
Nonetheless, Olivia takes a deep breath. There’s a moment that she mumbled to herself, something that the subject can’t hear, until she speaks up. “Lucy.”
The seal woman blinks a few times, sitting up in her spot.
“That’s what I’ll call you, Lucy. It’s hard to lose something like a name, but I think this one is fitting.”
And Lucy smiles, her fangs barely poking out over her bottom lip.
1, 4, and 5 for your selkie self insert? ^^ @rexscanonwife
HOLY SHMOLY SPECIFICALLY FOR THE FISH AU?!! I LOVE YOUU /P
1. what are the basics of your self insert? name, date of birth, height, etc.?
still same height, age, and general appearance, but i change her last name to Ross! (based on the ross seal!
i love the mermaid idea, but usually i'll just write her as a basic selkie with the coat of a Harbor Seal! cuz thats my favorite species X3
4. would you be considered a main character, side character, villain, or something else?
for this one shed still be a supporting role, but more of one to help the leads with information and such! living in the sea gives you a loooot of knowledge
5. does your self insert have any special powers or abilities?
yyeahh!! mainly the basic transformation when in the water with her pelt, but that has its own side effects!
the transformation can be halted, resulting in the mermaid appearance! even when in a fully human form as well it leaves behind some traits- sharp teeth, spotty freckles, a seal nose, things like that!!
