Extract:

“Lucky me,” Naruto grunted. His fingers found purchase in a fissure behind Sasuke’s back. Chakra sparked—weak, erratic. Stone cracked. Sasuke slid forward, collapsing into Naruto’s arms.

They hit the ground in a tangle. Sasuke’s breath hitched—pained, alive, alive—as Naruto rolled them upright. His hands shook where they gripped Sasuke’s torn shirt.

“Still with me?”

Sasuke’s glare could’ve flayed skin. “Why… always you?”

“You think I’d let you die twice in one week?” Naruto snarled, knuckles whitening against fabric. “Like hell I’d let you martyr yourself aga—”

The air curdled.

“Does it matter?” Sasuke shrugged, feigning nonchalance, but his posture betrayed him: shoulders rigid, spine rod-straight.

“You’re lying, again.” Naruto staggered upright, pain lancing his bandaged arm. “What aren’t you saying?”

Sasuke rose swiftly, a shadow uncoiling. “It won’t return. That’s all you need to know.”

“Did you bargain with it?” Naruto pressed, stumbling forward.

“Don’t be absurd.”

“Then where did it go? What were they dragging me toward?!”

Sasuke’s jaw tightened. “A tunnel.”

“What tunnel?”

“Enough, Naruto.”

Ignoring him, Naruto shoved past, following the stench of decay—foul blood crusting leaves, claw marks gouged into bark. Sasuke grabbed his shoulder, but Naruto wrenched free.

The snag, or proverbial Gordian knot in the works, was that the plan relied heavily on Sasuke helping him do this; Sasuke who knew what these things were, Sasuke who wasn't telling him anything, Sasuke who was being as stubborn as hell and purposefully unhelpful as possible. It did not help that the binding technique that Shikamaru had taught him seemed to be fast becoming more of a hindrance than any help. The more exhausted and tired Naruto became, the shorter the 'Leash' was getting, and after three days of extensive travel, keeping under cover and hidden at all times, and only taking short half-hour meal breaks, neither of them were getting a good opportunity to sleep. This had, in short, produced a very ratty, very irritable, very unpleasant Sasuke to be around. And Naruto had to be around Sasuke because he was quite sure that without this binding Jutsu, forbidden though it might be, Sasuke would have run off and left him. Left him for the horizon of uncertainty and whatever it was that lurked in the shadows.

Summary: Set sometime after the start of shippuden, Sasuke is forced against his will to return to Kohona and is placed under house arrest. Naruto is assigned as his would-be-jailor. They attempt to navigate what remains of their fractured relationship

Exerpt:

Almost on animal instinct Sasuke spat out the utterance: "I'll kill you."

"With what? The toothbrush?" Naruto jibed, pushing really close now to the white-hot all-consuming anger. Their noses were centimetres apart, his own eyes as turbulent as deep lake water stained bloody in a crimson sunset.

Leisurely Naruto reached into his pocket and pulled out a kunai, holding it idly between his middle and forefinger, swinging the blade back and forth.

Then he threw it forwards and it landed, embedding itself deep into the plaster and wood in the wall just beside Sasuke's left temple.

The grin got impossibly wider, yet every inch a fox's grin, low and seductive, pulling forwards and teasing. Deviously tempting and bewitchingly alluring.

"Go on then—try."

The unspoken word was ‘again’.

With that, Naruto turned his back in one fluid movement and walked out the door. Pausing in the archway, he looked casually back over his shoulder.

Sasuke stood stunned in the middle of the bathroom tiles.

Naruto's grin turned to something wicked, he winked and just strolled into the hallway.

Naruto laughed humourlessly, his skin was the constant reminder of the foxes outward claim on his vessel. Somewhere inside of him, in this universally close space of atoms, molecules, cells, tissues and organs that made up his body: an infinite chasm with impenetrable walls and hooked iron spikes existed, keeping this creature in.

Part of him hated it, part of him accepted it, and another piece just didn’t care anymore.

Naruto knew to keep it subdued, under control, as long as he was proficient at this he would be tolerated. As long as he kept the box bolted tight they would not be afraid of him. Long ago he had experienced constant nightmares of the fox breaking its bonds whilst he slept, how it had happened to Gaara. He had constantly been afraid of waking up one morning amongst blood, rubble and chaos.

The fear of killing everyone dear to him in his sleep.
