The trailing cactus Epiphyllum anguliger (fishbone cactus) has distinctive flattened green stems that have notched edges. These leaf-like stems are initially upright before becoming more elongated and pendent. There can be fragrant, white flowers in the summer.

Having coffee at the Urban Jungle Plant Nursery, Suffolk, UK, is great for a plant enthusiast as the café continues the theme of the nursery. Surrounded by plants I noticed Selenicereus anthonyanus (fish bone cactus, rick rack cactus) in a container hanging from a wire. This species grows in the southern Mexican rainforests and uses the stem for photosynthesis. It is said to be difficult to achieve the nightblooming flowers in cultivation but these are spectacular with white, pink and red petals and a sweet scent.

Some of my plants prefer bottom watering. This is true for my ricrac cactus, where the soil needs to dry out between waterings. Over time, top watering causes the moisture to "funnel" into specific areas, usually towards the stem of your plant. For impatient waterers (like me), this is a disaster waiting to happen. The pooling water near the base can lead to rot. 🛠For this set-up, get yourself a deep, non-poreous, tray. I like to use clear plastic ones, since they're inexpensive and I can monitor them at a glance. Now, I just fill up the tray and walk away. Fishbone Cactus Update!

Super happy to see that my ric rac, or fishbone cactus, is doing so well! I got this baby about a year ago and it’s amazing to see the gains this plant has! The plant in the front of the planter is the same one from the before photo. I noticed it was doing so well that I bought another and put it in the same pot. It’s pretty cool to see how well that one is doing also.

This plant is actually a part of the night blooming cactus family. It’s an epiphytic plant that originates in Mexican jungles. It’s actually a relatively easy plant to care for. In my experience, I don’t need to water this plant too often. I give it plenty of bright indirect light and so far it seems very happy. For soil, I keep it very light and airy. About a 3 to 1 ratio of perlite to soil and top it off with pumice. It’s an epiphytic plant, which means it doesn’t naturally grow in soil, but instead the nooks and crannies of trees. So it can dry out some between watering.

At first, I wasn’t sure how well I would do with this plant. I’ve never had one before this plant, but so far so good. I would definitely recommend this plant to anyone who has the light and isn’t heavy handed with watering. Definite 4 out of 5 leaves rating. 🌱🌱🌱🌱

Ok so those of you that know of my plant Long Boi...I bought him (a ric rac cactus/fish bone cactus) as a medium cutting, received it in the mail and was told to let the roots grow, just by letting him chill on the counter for like a week. That was all great. I finally planted him in the summer of 2018 and nothing really happened UNTIL a random little second sprout came up in December 2018. Look at Long Boi now.
