I don't have any pictures, but this is more a question about odd bug behaviour. I was in the pool at my complex last evening (around 9PM, so just before sunset here) and there were several dragonflies flying around the pool. Some were doing laps, some were going back and forth like lawnmowers, some were flying wherever. There were probably 6-8 of them, and they were all flying around 5-7 feet above the water and none of them seemed to be interacting with each other (crashing, fighting, mating, chasing, etc.). Any idea what was going on? Did they think the pool was a pond and were looking for food? Do dragonflies normally occupy the same airspace as other dragonflies without issue or are they territorial? If it helps at all, I'm in the Metro Vancouver area and the dragonflies appeared to be dark blue or green and maybe 3 inches long, but I couldn't see them very well between the speed and the light. Thanks!
Almost certainly looking for food at that time in the evening! They are very commonly found in the same space in large numbers, but yes, they can be territorial, especially males when looking to mate. Apparently if they weren't dive bombing each other, they were happy just to hunt in the same space :)
