       “---look at this,” he says, voice gentle as ever. he kneels down beside the small girl, extends his arm, and a timid, plant-like creature begins to travel down the length of his arm toward ponyo. “don’t touch him, okay? he’s very shy.”

       “---whoa, whoa, hey!” he takes a few long, quick steps toward her ( they have to be quick, because her little feet move at hyper speed ), and he scoops her up off the ground, dropping her in against his hip and leaning back at the waist to get a good look at her face. “where do you think you’re going, huh?”

      “---so you’re the little girl john’s been telling me about.” she kneels in front of her, smiles brightly, and rests her chin in her hand. “ponyo, right? how hard is it going to be to look after you? tell me the truth.”

"Ponyo is a sweet little girl isn't she?"

       “yeah, i guess, if you think little girls who climb on you like a tree and spit water at you are sweet.” yeah, he thinks she’s sweet. he thinks she’s probably the most precious thing he’s ever touched, and sometimes he worries his bad luck is going to rub off on her.

     “ Alright, little one. “ spoke the red-head with a smile touching at her lips, her eyes glistening up as the young girl once more gently tugged on her curls, ever so curious about the older woman’s hair. “ If you promise not to pull too hard on my hair, you can braid it. “ she chuckled, gently placing herself down in a more comfortable position in front of the young child.

       “c’mon, tell me what i taught you.” he doesn’t smile when she looks back at him, but he does feel warm at the sight of her happy face. most people look as different from that as they can get when they’re looking at him, and it makes him move his fingers more carefully in her hair to know she’s willing to look at him like that. he doesn’t want to hurt her.

       “ai laik ponyo. swima gada.” he puts tiny braids into her curly hair, not bothering to tie them off. they’re just going to come undone anyway. at least if he’s playing with her hair, she’s sitting still and not trying to chase mutated butterflies.

       “no, try again. ma’ts hongri.” she pauses, then finishes. “kodon, beja.” she holds a piece of meat in her hands--- ham, perhaps?--- but she doesn’t share it with ponyo. not until she learns how to ask for it.
