Send “ 💤 reverse” for my muse’s reaction to yours falling asleep while resting against them.
It was supposed to be a simple mission: find the rotting branch and then prune the tree. Judging by the heavy tracks in the mud, the two ninjas weren’t far from their targets, but the elements proved too hazardous for them to continue. By daybreak, the footprints would be erased by the storm, leaving them with nothing but the fresh scent of new rain and a cold trail. Fortunately for them, Akali had spotted a shelter not too far from their position, but a moonless, rainy night spent in a shallow cave of eastern Ionia was not how the Eye of Twilight expected to find himself and his fellow Kinkou. At least it was better than being caught out in the downpour in the open jungle.
It didn’t seem as though the rain would ease up anytime soon, so they had no choice but to camp here. It was a long trek with the wind whipping water in their face. Their uniforms were sopping wet and heavy by the time they managed to climb the slippery rocks. Once they were at the mouth of the cave, they took a few minutes trying to wring out their clothes as much as they could before settling down for the night. It didn’t help that their backs were always sticking out in the rain when they tried.
What appeared to be a cave from down below the ledge though had turned out to be a deceiving, tiny alcove with hardly enough room for Shen to tuck himself comfortably within its precious dry space. It was good enough to accommodate both of them if they managed to maneuver and squeeze together. Without a word, Master Shen had wedged himself in its corner and Akali followed suit, sitting herself in front of him.
“Conserve your strength,” Shen said, resting his arms and legs on either side of her. “I will take the first watch.” He didn’t need to say another word. She gave him a curt nod and curled up with her head resting against his chest. Akali was fast asleep. The Eye of Twilight then carefully wrapped an arm around the other ninja to guard her from the wind while she rested. There was hardly any wiggle room if he wanted to stay dry, but Shen didn’t mind being still like this.
