Equality for Flatbush : E4F salutes The #BabelandWorkers of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) on ratifying their 1st contract!!!!! #FistsupForBabeland
This is Megan. Megan is a friend of mine and a sex educator. Megan is very much about talking about the connection between our bodies and our emotional life, talking about how high femmes need more space, value and respect in (queer) spaces, and also talking about the role of nurturing and/or masculinity in restorative justice.
Megan likes: fancy smoothies that have nut butter, dramas set in realities different then this one, wearing her truth, Mists of Avalon aesthetic, and clothes that come in all the sizes.
Megan has me totally hooked on looking at Smart Glamour for when I want femme clothing. Me and Megan talk a lot about the crux of enjoying masc folks as feminists and avoiding toxic masculinity while doing so. Megan’s hair is always on point because she uses hybrid lube to moisturize her curls.
This is a simple in the round knit with a skien of Red Heart Soft in Dark Leaf which matches Megan’s eyes. I used my fav Chiaogoo Interchangeable Red Twist Set and experimented with knitpurl into the same stitch for the increases for the bell shape. The slender end goes over the head and the wide end opens for the face. Super easy knit, I did most of it while watching Supernatural.
This is Charlie. Charlie is a friend, a mermaid, a sex educator, and a Ravenclaw. I appreciate many things about Charlie, not the least of which how Charlie was like “wait, let’s make this a lil’ bit queerer and a lil’ bit better with tasteful sideboob.” I knitted most of this for them while watching Supernatural and when I felt stressed during Babeland contract negotiations outside the RWDSU office.
Charlie likes: Japan, the ocean, candy, bi visibility and representation, fancy mixed cocktails, vegetable jalfrezi, and eating at Saxon + Parole.
For Charlie, I really wanted to make them a piece that looked like the ocean. I used Yarn Over increases to give this piece a globular-semicircle shape littered with bubble-gaps. It’s also textured, switching between the (reverse) garter stitch and the (reverse) stockinette stitch at uncounted intervals, and some yarn over/knit two rows thrown in, for some movement and an organic feel.
I cast on 6 stitches of Red Heart Boutique Treasure Yarn in Mosaic on my trusty Chiaogoo Interchangeable Red Twist Lace Set and put stitch markers between 2 and 3, and between 4 and 5. I started and ended each row with an increase stitch and for the first chunk, I also made an increase on the inside of each stitch marker. Then I replaced those stitch markers with 15 stitches on either side and started and finished each row with an increase while do an increase on the inside of each stitch marker on the right side only. With two skeins of yarn, the finishing hem was two rows of YO/K2 TOG and elongated rows.
Knitting this and Lauren Victoria’s had a lot in common, I was just having fun and experimenting with mixing up simple row design but with Charlie’s I was also have fun learning shaping with increases instead of shaping with decreases. There is a big idea of “you gotta have a plan when you knit” I feel like that is misplaced. Play around, have fun, lock up your row counter sometimes.
This is my friend Alexa, and the accordion knit scarf I made for her. Alexa is shown above harnessing her inner Domme. Alexa is THE only person I have ever seen make off-white look so Toppy. Myself and Alexa both hate being cold. While the this blog has no photo evidence, take my word for it, when Alexa does smile, she could basically get you to do just about anything.
I’m blessed to know her because she is brave, supportive and one of the kindest people I know. Not everyone deserves her kindness, and she knows it, so if you find yourself in her company you had better be good to her.
Alexa likes: wearing white, wearing her Coach riding boots, standing in solidarity #FistsUpForBabeland, gold jewelry, eating Gluten Free Cheesburgers and G-Free Mac n’ Cheese, Drake, and watching Anime.
I made this scarf using Wool-Ease Thick and Quick in Oatmeal by Lion’s Brand Yarn. I cast on 25 stitches on size 15 straight needles. The accordion stitch is great for adding texture, warmth, and if you read this blog, you know I don’t count stitches. To knit the accordion stitch for flat knitting, stockinette X rows then reverse stockinette X rows. (To knit the accordion stitch for circular knitting, just knit X rows then purl X rows.) I love big-gauge knits as side projects in the middle of larger projects with smaller gauges.
This is my friend Stan. You might know Stan as the amazing artist behind The Hazards of Love or Abernathy Square. Maybe you know Stan because you work at #Babeland and saw the Stananigans comic about supporting Babeland being part of the RWDSU. Maybe you saw her at Flame Con or maybe you are lucky like me and you know her personally.
Stan likes: indigo, dead things, skulls and horns, diversity in comics, workers rights, her husband and her LARPs.
I made Stan this spiral scarf and it matches her nails which is very exiting.
It was made with Cannon Country Yarn in Midnight Blue. I cast on 150 stitches and looped 8 kinks into the first row before joining to create the spiraling effect. I used my ChiaoGoo 12s from my ChiaoGoo interchangeable large set.
I made this piece while watching The Musketeers which is lovely because it’s very bi, very poly, has a lot of leather, a lot of clasps, and a lot of feelings.
