“Scars are tattoos with better stories”. I have 4 external “tattoos” from my surgery; the largest being about 10 inches long. They are not pretty. They’ve become keloids - thick ones. They itch - bad. They are sometimes painful and thanks to some nerve damage underneath, they cause the right side of my torso to almost always ache. If I overuse my right arm too much, it will shut down as a reminder that they are there. And I must confess - glances in the mirror after bathing, moisturizing or applying deodorant are usually followed with a grimace of some sort. That’s the vanity in me. At first, I planned to get a tattoo that could cover them up; now I have decided against it. Because every time I see them, I’m reminded of how they got there and what they have come to represent. They are my constant reminder than I’m stronger than I think I am. They challenge me not to take ANYTHING – especially time and my loved ones – for granted. They represent courage, endurance, strength…SURVIVAL. They showed me that I am loved & supported – even by people whom I once thought didn’t really notice me or didn’t care. They are my proof that God is Real… and that He heals. Out of all the tattoos I have (6 “traditional” ones at present), my surgical ones are the deepest and give relevance to the rest. With pain, comes strength. Only SURVIVORS wear scars. #cancersurvivor #esophagealcancer #bravethestorm #tiffanymonique #fitclique #fckcancer #hedidthat
