Day 2 of Tumblr Challenge

9 thing about myself

1. I am a follower of Christ. I have gone to church my whole life, but only really started walking in the faith 3 years ago. Jesus is my savior. (:

2. I love classic literature. Give me a book full of Shakespeare's plays or a book written by Fitzgerald, and you won't hear from me for a while.

3.  I enjoy shows such as Doctor Who, Sherlock, and How I Met Your Mother. These are my three favorite, actually. :)

4. I am very comfortable talking to little kids, or people that are older than me. Communicating with people around my age is difficult for me, and I come off as being socially awkward a lot.

5. I plan to be a pastor when I'm older. If I can not find a full-time pastoring job, I would like to be an English teacher along with being a preacher.

6. I want to move to North Carolina. I love the ocean, and want to live closer to it.

7. I am at the top of my class in school. I take pride in my academics. I'm a major nerd, and that's how I like it. Haha :)

8. I am the president of my youth group, and I absolutely love it. I love being able to guide kids to Jesus. Also, serving others in my community through the group is just incredible.

9. I am in love with a boy named Nathan. We dated for a year and a half, but then things started getting complicated. We've been doing this weird on and off thing for a while. Despite all the issues and differences we face, I am  crazy about him. I love him with all my heart, and would do absolutely anything for him. He is truly fantastic. <3

So yeah. These are 9 things about me. This is sorta fun. Haha :)

This Side of Paradise

My favorite part of this book is the conversation between Monsignor Darcy and Amory about personalities and personages. Monsignor explains to Amory that the difference lies in the fact that "personality is a physical matter entirely, it lowers the people it acts on. But while a personality is active, it overrides 'the next thing.' Now a personage gathers. He is never thought of apart from what he's done. He's a bar on which a thousand things have been hung - glittering things sometimes, but he uses those things with a cold mentality back of them...when you feel that your garnered prestige and talents and all that are hung out, you need never bother anybody, you can cope with them without difficulty...but do the next thing!"

My recent obsession with figuring out who I am couldn't go any more perfectly with this novel, especially this paragraph. I love the way Monsignor insists that what you have "collected" will show through to those around you, without you having to knead your personality too hard. Personages, unlike personalities, can be changed, altered, they allow for mistakes and most of all for hope. They give closure, and allow transcendence to the next thing you can gather up to make yourself a better person. Experiences change people, and so in effect we are made up of our experiences- or what is held on our shelf. 

This novel was set during an interesting time and takes a relatable and honest stab (as far as I am concerned the most successful) at growing up and finding yourself. For the most part it is realistic and not too positive. Who are you supposed to be, act like, right or wrongs, when you have so much at your doorstep?
