While in Minnesota, I got to see F. Scott Fitzergerald’s home in St. Paul, at 599 Summit Avenue on Cathedral Hill.
This is Fitzgerald’s family home. He was born here, but spent much of his later young life in Buffalo and Princeton. As he began to write, he met Zelda, and they were engaged, but she broke it off when she remained unconvinced he would be able to support her. He returned to his family home, where he rewrote and edited his novel about his time at Princeton, This Side of Paradise. He was so short on money at this time that he had to take a job repairing car roofs, but he was in luck- his manuscript sold to Scribner and was a hit. Zelda then married him, and they moved back to the East Coast to begin their infamously turbulent relationship.
