ΣPSON - FIVE IRON
Anyone looking to expand their music library, I HIGHLY recommend Five Iron Frenzy.
A band most don’t know, especially nowadays, FIF is a christian rock/punk/ska band, and while, yes, they are a christian band, they really avoid being a /christian band/ in the common mindset, their religious songs usually have a moral anyone can appreciate, and they never feel in your face about it.
Their songs range anywhere from serious and calling out America with its xenophobia (With quite a few specifically referencing how we treated native americans) to calling out Big Business, to happy upbeat songs simply about loving life, to pretty funny comedy songs.
They had about a 7 year run, with 8 albums, then decided to split up of their own accord leaving while being happy with each other, did a massive final tour. Then a few years back, they announced they wanted to do a 10th year anniversary album, but wanted to do it without a record label, all on their own, it would be THEIR album. But they’d need cash for it. 30,000 dollars. They set up a kickstarter for 60 days. They hit it in 55 minutes.
As the kickstarter was already planned out, donations kept coming in, leading to getting members better instruments, funding tours, etc.
The posted link is to the song “Zen and the Art of Xenophobia” off of the aforementioned 10th year anniversary album “Engine of a Million Plots”
This is a seriously amazing band if you read into them, with amazingly dedicated fans, and being somewhat small, fans who are AMAZINGLY HAPPY to find other FIF fans. Give ‘em a go!
I heard this while listening to a podcast
Five Iron: "I don't know what 'otaku' is" Nowacking: "It's a delicious meal, from the magical land of, Mexico"
Been a while since I posted these guys here, damn good band. Have a listen.
***Brave Saint Saturn -- Daylight***
Thank you, Ben, for reminding me of this gem. Arguably the greatest song ever written by Reese Roper; most definitely the greatest song in the Brave Saint Saturn discography. Not for the faint of heart and not for your easy listening pleasure. This song is not fast food -- it is a song that needs to be enjoyed, digested, and given time to nourish your soul.
Quick story. My best memory of this song is driving through the backwoods of Chino Hills. I remember playing this song on my Sony portable CD player that was hooked up to a cassette tape that enabled me to listen to it in my Toyota Camry car stereo. I remember being hit by the sincerity and earnestness of the bridge and final chorus. I don't know how, but I cried twice while listening to it that late afternoon. And from that point on, I knew the type of songs I would strive to write. Songs that are honest, songs with feeling, and songs of hope.
Got to see five iron frenzy! They were great!
