So this little drabble is for the lovely @thebearmage and for anyone else that wants to read about Sub Five getting railed. It's not normally my wheelhouse but hopefully I did ok. I also tried to keep it gender neutral. Enjoy! 😈
Warnings: SMUT
Five discards his suit jacket and slumps onto the couch, his tie askew. He has clearly been raking his hands through his hair all day from the looks of it. He's barely even spoke a word to you.
You pour him a drink and he takes it, tossing it back in one swallow and sinks further into the cushion.
"Bad day?" you ask, sitting next to him.
"I can't even talk about it," he grumbles, shaking his head, even though he continues to talk about it. "No one can make any goddamn decisions for themselves anymore. Like I have the solution to everything! I just... I just want to turn my brain off for five fucking minutes and not have to think. You know what I mean?"
He glances to the side, not meeting your gaze but you know what he means. You smile and fix a piece of stray hair on his forehead. "I think that can be arranged."
Ten minutes later and he is naked and strapped to your bed, wrists and ankles held down by wide leather straps. He's pulling at them with a slight look of panic in his eyes. But that's how he always starts off. It won't take long to break him.
"Remember," you say, stripping your own clothes away. "If you blink out of these... you will pay."
He rolls his eyes and then nods in agreement. "Fine."
It doesn't take long... maybe another ten minutes. But now that smug look is off his face and he's making pathetic little moaning noises while you very slowly and very casually stroke his hard cock. You haven't let him come yet and he's leaking onto his own stomach.
"What do you think, baby?" you ask softly. "Want to get fucked?"
Five nods, his eyes closed. "God, yes."
You open the drawer of the nightstand and take out a torpedo shaped vibrator and lube. When you hold it up, you smile sweetly. "Your wish is my command."
First, you climb back on and straddle his thighs. You use the vibrator on yourself first, making sure he's watching while his dick drips from neglect. He's biting at his lip and a small whine escapes.
After a minute, you turn the vibrator off and use the lube to coat it. You can see the tension in Five's body as he anticipates your next move. But the goal is to get rid of the tension, so you slide the vibe into his hole and watch his face. First it's a grimace and then his head tips back and his eyes flutter close. You turn the vibrator on again and Five arches his back off the bed.
"Oh, fuck," he groans. He sucks in a loud breath. "Ohhh god..."
You start to fuck him with the toy, making sure to drag it over his prostrate each time. It's only a minute or so before he's breaking; clenching his jaw and sweating and panting while desperately trying to rock his hips up. You know he wants you to jerk him off at the same time, but you're not going to do that yet.
He comes untouched, except for the vibrator up his ass, and he coats his abdomen and thighs with ropes of warm cum. He's shaking and spasming and you haven't let up yet. Even though he came, you continue to fuck his ass, harder this time, and he moans sadly.
"I can't... it's too much..." he's whining.
"I don't think so," you tell him.
This time, you take his dick in your free hand and stroke him hard and fast until he's rock hard again. He's whimpering now and begging.
"Please..." he moans. But he doesn't finish his sentence before he's coming again.
You work him over with your fist, slick with lube and his own cum, and watch as his eyes roll back into his head. After, he's trembling beneath you, his face flushed and shining with sweat. He can barely catch his breath.
"Fuck," he whispers but it comes out like a sad cry. "Please," he says again.
"Please, what, baby?" you ask.
"I don't... I don't know..." he's mumbling and his entire body is slack.
You ignore the fact that he's barely coherent. "I think it's my turn now," you say.
The vibrator is turned off and taken out, causing Five to let out another desperate whine. Then you climb over him, bracing your hands on his shoulders and start to rub his cock between your legs. You keep doing it until he's hard again and he's trying to enter you. But you're not letting him yet.
You wait until he has tears running down the sides of his face and his hair is plastered to his forehead and he's whimpering and pleading for you to fuck him one more time. He's completely debauched and defeated. He's perfect.
When you finally slide onto his cock, Five lets out the longest, saddest moan that ends with a "Thank you," sighed out in relief.
You ride him, hard and fast, bouncing on his dick while he's so fucked out he can't even open his eyes anymore. He could barely move, even if you had let him. When he's just about ready to come for the third time, you stop moving and for a second you think he might actually break the rules and blink out of the restraints. Instead he makes another weak, pathetic mewl.
"Please," he moans, his head lolling from side to side and his eyes still closed. "Please don't stop."
You smile, satisfied, and start moving again. He grits his teeth and thrusts his hips up to meet you and you resume your pace. This time, you come with him and he unloads inside of you until he's completely spent and lying limp against the mattress.
You lean down to kiss him and he smiles dreamily, kissing you back. But he doesn't have any strength or breath left to speak.
When you climb off, you undo the straps and let him free. You get a wet cloth and clean his sticky body off. Then you let him curl up on his side, under the covers, sleepy and with his mind totally blank.
Summary - You were twenty-four, a freshly graduated soon to be lawyer, when you'd been approached by The Commission and offered a life beyond even your wildest fantasies. You ate up the company line of preserving the timeline, keeping the world safe and managing the space time continuum.
Five years of service and you could settle in the time of your choice, they'd even told you that you could come straight back to the day you left and continue on as if no time had passed at all. They'd branded it as an adventure, that you'd be doing something meaningful and extraordinary, you were in too deep when you discovered what their idea of preservation was.
So young, so arrogant and so, so stupid.
Pairing - Five Hargreeves x Reader
Warnings- Swearing, canon divergence, not proof read, setting up this plot, set in season 4, 18+ MDNI
A/N - Having some trouble finishing my other series and this is something that's been tugging at me, this first chapter is whole lot of setup for what's to come. I will probably go back and proof read this because this is just what came straight off the brain. are we sliding into OC territory, not sure.
Resilient, enduring and adaptable.
These were words that came up frequently in your yearly reviews at The Commission, words that you took pride. You were all those things before you became the well oiled killing machine you were today, it's the reason you were chosen in the first place.
But there was a limit to everything, even your own pride and self preservation, and right now as you waited for the subway car to roll into it's next destination you realized you might have finally hit yours. You'd lasted longer than most would in this underground hell you'd been exiled, but you couldn't take another wasteland with no survivors, another dashed hope at freedom.
You'd lasted six years and two months lost in this maze of timelines, four years and five months that you'd been doing it alone and before three days ago ten months since you'd come across a timeline that hadn't been in apocalyptic ruin.
Something had happened six years ago, your regulation commission briefcase had started malfunctioning, it had taken you a few tries to get back to the subway on your last mission. One malfunctioning briefcase was an anomaly in itself, so when your partners had spluttered to a stop you'd been at a loss. You had five days before someone from the commission would meet you on the fifth east platform level twenty-seven for your monthly check-in as they always did, only no one showed up, no one showed up ever again.
You were stranded.
Of all people to be stuck with your partner, Charlie, was not a bad one. You'd liked him almost immediately which was a rarity for you, forced exiled really bonded the two of you together. They'd sent you down to the subway to study it's existence, they'd lost many other agents down here who'd also been trying figure out how it operated. You'd spend a month reporting and marking out timelines, trying to not get killed in the more violent timelines, and at the end of every month you were taken out of the subway for three days for recuperation and sent straight back in.
Over and over and over again.
When you'd realized you couldn't leave you'd had to go into timelines separately from then on, the only way the opening to the subway stayed accessible was if one of your were still inside to keep the link open. For awhile you were sure The Commission was testing you, the only reason the two of you were down here was for punishment so you'd been convinced this was another one of their manipulations for a chance to further extend your sentence.
But when timelines started imploding and there was still no sign of anyone from head quarters you'd had to concede that something was terribly, terribly wrong. You spent the next two years keeping track of timelines and when they inevitably came to an end, going inside taking turns and returning to that same reporting platform everyday hoping someone, anyone, came to get you out.
The way it all operated was nonsensical, time in the subway didn't seem to move properly because you weren't aging physically as quickly as you should be, just like with Commission Headquarters. But time outside the subway must be moving, things were changing, but you'd noted in other timelines they weren't. You'd never made sense of it, how this subway was never ending, how these timelines operated on different rules.
Eventually Charlie had cracked, it was to be expected if you were being honest, Charlie was not really field material and although he was greatly skilled he just didn't have the mental strength you needed in this line of work. In his defense he had lasted alot longer than you'd thought when it came to a head just over two years in. He'd told you half hysterically that he was going into a timeline and not coming back, he was ready to take his chances and make peace with it. You didn't stop him, there was no way you could force him to stay, but you'd hoped he would come to his senses and return. There was no telling when this timeline would end just like the others.
Six short months later, and a few visits from Charlie in between to break up the monotony of the underground so you could breath some fresh air and have some much needed social interaction, you had ascended the stairs to find the small town completely leveled. You'd always known it was only a matter of time, but your heart had clenched hard in your chest as your stomach dropped all the same.
That marked the official start of your protracted isolation.
Four years entirely alone and truthfully you'd gone a little mad, it was bound to happen. Talking to yourself, answering yourself, laughing at your own jokes and arguing with yourself until tears were streaming down your face and broken glass had been shattered across the ground. You'd catch yourself occasionally in a moment of clarity and realize just how off the deep end you were going and you'd pull yourself back from the edge, this involuntary isolation was just mind over matter you'd reasoned with yourself repeatedly.
But, six years, two months and one day and you were ready to call it. Your backpack was full of canned food and water, some books you'd read dozens of times over, shelter and some spare clothes to brace for the elements. Three days ago you'd found one timeline that was still standing, but you didn't think you'd have much time before that timeline collapsed like the others. Alternatively you could chose one that was already destroyed, you knew your chances of surviving an apocalypse were slight, but odds of survival in the barren land leftover from one were slightly higher.
You had to try one last thing before you accepted your fate, before you finally decided you'd suffered enough.
You laid down along the seat, pulling the ratty old jacket around your form and closing your eyes, one last moment of comfort before you decided which stop you were getting of on. You'd spent countless night sleeping on trains, the movement rocking you to sleep and the operating sounds comforting your tired mind as you tried to find a night of peaceful sleep.
As you laid there you had the sudden longing for your estranged family, people that you hadn't seen in so very long that you could barely remember their faces, they were more like strangers now. You'd had a great child hood, a great family and great friends, something you took wholly for granted. You'd thought everything and everyone in your life were painfully boring and you'd wanted more for as long as you could remember and you'd been convinced you were meant for greater things.
You were methodical and driven all through school, you had routine and balance, excelling in academics and still maintaining a colorful social life, but even with everything you still felt unfulfilled. You had always felt like you were meant for more.
You didn't want to end up like your mother, a house wife whose life orbited around her husband and children, who's idea of exciting was book club or margaritas with her friends on a Friday afternoon.
So you'd opted for success and money, anything that didn't have you end up in a small town in Georgia volunteering for street parades and bake sales. You couldn't have been more different, she was all extroverted warmth and disorganized chaos and you were detached composure that mostly ran cold with a slight simmering of heat underneath.
You were twenty-four, a freshly graduated soon to be lawyer, when you'd been approached by The Commission and offered a life beyond even your wildest fantasies.
But you were resilient, enduring and adaptable so you did just that. You noticed very quickly that squeaky wheels weren't squeaky for very long before they weren't seen again, that you didn't ask too many questions, atleast not until you were valuable to the company and that the selling point of five years of service was an unreachable goal.
Time would be added on for small things, late deadlines, well that's another two months of your time, a failed mission, there's another two years tacked on top for company time and resources. It was a never ending stream of debt you could never hope to clear. The only way you really left The Commission was in a body bag or by running and very few who had been bold enough to run had actually gotten away and even fewer had managed to stay gone.
That five year detour had turned into twenty-eight years before you'd tried to run. You'd planned your escape for years, putting every minute detail into place, getting the moving parts just right before you could slip away under the radar.
Against all odds you'd done it. You escaped, you were free, and you had been for nearly two years before someone had finally found you and dragged you back into the snake pit.
The subway job had been your punishment, a long haul job with great benefits and promotion potential at the end of tenure they'd said, they hadn't framed it as a form of discipline despite it being exactly that. They'd treated it like a huge misunderstanding with a disgruntled employee and that they were giving you a second chance to climb the ranks when really It was a way to wear you down and break your spirit. But you were determined to show them up, so angry and bitter at your capture that you refused to let their smirking faces win. You'd do the ten years down here slinking through the subway like a rat and you'd come back to the front lines with your spark still intact.
Obviously that went to shit.
Your unwavering resolve to survive this mess had landed you right here, maybe Charlie had the right idea in the end, he'd gotten six month of peace, six months of an actual life before he died. Maybe the whole damn show was collapsing around you and there wasn't a timeline out there that survived a cataclysmic event and your search was meaningless.
Maybe that quiet, peaceful freedom you longed for was unreachable after all and all this fight and refusal to take a knee had just dragged out the inevitable.
You sighed stretching your body out with a groan and rubbing your eyes with your fist.
"This is it, fifty-fifty chance" You mumbled to yourself as the train doors closed and sped off to the next station.
The idea that whatever you chose would mean tomorrow being different, that you wouldn't wake up surrounded by these same concrete walls lit excitement in your belly. Two more stops to the surviving timeline you'd found or four stops to a relatively stable looking wasteland you could take a chance on.
"Atleast there's people" You noted, maybe even if this world ended the next day atleast you weren't alone, did you even know how to interact with anyone anymore, were you even aware of how strange you probably were after so many years of seclusion.
You felt the train start to slow at the next station, you preferred riding the subway and listening to the noises on the subway car over the loud silence that surrounded you on the platforms. You ignored the garbled voice announcing your next stop and the hiss of the doors opening for passengers that didn't exist as you pondered your morality when movement caught the corner of your eye, your body jerked up immediately, fear jolting down your spine. It was such an alien concept that something or someone else was down here that it was terrifying, you'd never seen any other living thing here in all these years.
You mouth gaped open unable to form words as the other body jolted at your movement, head whipping around to find the source. They looked just as shocked to see you as you were to see them. It was a man, dark hair hanging in his pale face, green eyes widening as they locked on your form. You glanced down briefly at the black suit he was wearing, you didn't trust people in suits, especially young people in suits in time traveling subways they shouldn't have been able to find.
Commission?
Several moments of loaded silence passed as you accessed each other before you said the only thing that came to the forefront of your mind.

I laugh at a joke Five said as I lay on my back, on the ground, at the foot of Five’s bed. My legs were raised up in the air and resting on top of his desk chair that I placed in front of me. My head was at the edge of his bed. Five was laying on his bed and was distracting me every two seconds from the book I was currently reading.
“Can you stop it! I’m trying to read.” I complained, but you could hear the smile in my voice.
“How about no. I like to hear your pretty voice. It’s music to my ears. Especially your laugh.”
Five’s head popped up from him bed. From my angle it looked like he was laying on his stomach, and his head was over the edge of the bed so that we could be face to face. Or sort of. It was hard to look at him properly when his face was upside down.
“I don’t care if you like my voice! Or my laugh! Can you just let me get through this last chapter before mom signals for dinner?”
“Not a chance.” He said with a smirk.
I sighed before I slid my bookmark in between the pages where I left off and placed my book on the ground beside me. I figured there was no point in trying to read if he was going to do everything in his power to make me pay attention to him. Five smiled in victory before he placed both of his hands flat on the ground on each side of my face.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Oh nothing.” His voice hinted with mischief.
I gave him a curious look, but I soon found out what his intentions were as he leaned down closer to my face, so that he can connect his lips to mine. I rolled my eyes, but kissed him back anyway. The way our faces were positioned, with Five’s face upside down and mine right side up. Or was my face upside down and his right side up? Well however our faces were positioned, it reminded me of the spideman kiss.
Five and I snuck out on a date to go to the movies and we saw the movie Spiderman. Five jokingly whispered to me that we should try to kiss like that, after the scene appeared on the screen, and I hit his arm in response telling him to not be ridiculous. Well I guess he got the last laugh. I melted into the kiss and placed my hands on the sides of his face and I might have accidentally pulled him down too far because he came tumbling down from his bed.
Good thing he has good reflexes because he managed to move himself over to the side, so that he didn’t fall completely on top of me. He groaned when he made contact with the floor and his legs banged against his dresser. Papers that were stacked on the top of the dresser flew everywhere. I quickly sat up and assed the damage I caused.
“Are you alright?” I asked.
“Yeah I am I might just need a minute.” Five said, “I didn’t hurt you did I?”
“No you didn’t.”
He nodded. While Five took a moment to catch his breath after what just happened, I decided to gather all the papers that fell on the ground. I grabbed a few before I noticed that there were scribbles of different equations jotted down on the papers. It didn’t look like any equations from our math studies, so it must be something Five is working on, on his own.
“What are these equations for?” I asked.
Five sat up from the floor and looked at the papers I was holding.“Equations.” He said as if that answered my question
“I know that, but what are the equations for?”
“Just something I am working on.”
Five said nothing more and began to collect the rest of the papers that were still on the ground. I placed my hand on his shoulder and he stopped what he was doing and looked at me.
“Hey you don’t have to hide anything from me. You can tell me.”
Five looked at me and I could tell he was debating if he should share “his secret”. “I can never keep anything from you can I.”
“Not a chance.” I said repeating the words he said to me minutes earlier. Five smiled softly when he realized what I did. He sighed before he began to explain.
“They’re equations to try to figure out how to time travel.”
“Time travel?”
Five always talked about time traveling and I knew it was something he really wanted to do, yet I was unaware that dad started to teach him how. I knew dad was talking about it, but I didn’t know they reached that part of his training. Five nodded at my question.
“You started learning how to time travel during your training?”
“No, but I figured I would get a jump start on it. I’ve been trying to get dad to teach me for a while, but he’s been dismissing me. He says I’m not ready.”
I processed Five’s words. I know he wanted to time travel, but maybe dad has a point. Dad is technically the only one who knows the limits to all of our capabilities, so he knows what we’re ready and not ready for. I wanted to continue discussing the matter, but mom signaled the bell indicating that it was time to line up for dinner
“Come on let’s go.” I said as I rose from the floor. “We don’t want dad to chop our heads off because we’re late for dinner now do we?”
“No we don’t want that.” Five said with a smile.
I extend my hand for Five to take and when his hand was in mine, I pulled him up from the floor. When he stood up we were standing face to face. Five placed a quick peck on my lips and he walked away to open the door. I smiled at his actions, and followed him and the rest of our siblings, book in hand, to the entrance of our home.
We all lined up in the hall and waited for mom to give us the signal to enter the dining hall. Vanya was the last of us to arrive and I gave her a small smile, which she returned, when she met us in line.
Mom rang the bell and the eight of us walked in single file into the dining hall and we stood behind our assigned seats. Dad’s favorite podcast was playing from the record player. Something that he always plays during dinner. He didn’t allow any talking during meals, but he allows us to do small non distracting tasks in our seat in silence, which was why I brought my book. Books were something I brought often whenever we ate and my brother Ben did so as well.
I motioned for Ben, who was standing diagonally to the left from me, to show me what book he was planning on reading. He turned the cover towards me, so I could get a better look at the title: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
“Again?” I mouthed to Ben.
“It’s a classic!” He mouthed back.
I shook my head at the fact that he was reading the Harry Potter series for the 5th time, but I couldn’t blame him. It was an amazing book series and it’s easily one of my top three favorite book series of all time. Plus I’m guilty of reading Harry Potter multiple times too.
“What book are you reading?” Ben mouthed.
I turned the book towards him and he read the title, which was Pride and Prejudice. Ben smiled at my choice of book to read and I smiled back, but my smile quickly fell when I realized dad was coming in. He silently walked over to his seat at the head of the table and stood in front of all of us. After a moment he ordered us to sit down and we all simultaneously did so.
Luther and Allison stared at each other from across the table. I swear something is going on between those two. Diego was carving something into his chair with one of his knives. Klaus was sneakily trying to take drugs during dinner (I give him credit for attempting to take drugs in front of dad). Ben was reading like me and Vanya was simply eating.
I haven’t started eating yet, since I wanted to finish the chapter I didn’t get to finish earlier due to a certain someone. I felt a nudge on my ankle and I turned to my left to see Five. He pointed at my plate and indicated that I should start eating. I pointed at my book to indicate that I wanted to finish the chapter first.
Five sighed in defeat knowing that there’s no use in trying change my mind. I only had one page left to read anyway, so as soon as I finished it, I immediately set my book down and began eating.
About halfway into our silent dinner, I felt a hand slip into mine under the table and I looked up at Five again. I couldn’t read his face, but he gave my hand a squeeze before he took his knife with his other hand and stabbed the table. Everyone turned to look at Five. What is he doing?
“Number Five?” Dad asked.
“I have a question.”
“Knowledge is an admirable goal, but you know the rules. No talking during meal times. You are interrupting Herr Carlson.”
Five abruptly let go of my hand and pushed his plate forward. He was not going to let this go. The rest of my siblings looked at me as if they expected me to do something, but what am I supposed to do? I knew I couldn’t control Five right now and I don’t want to make dad angry. I placed a hand on Five’s knee to try and calm him down, but that did absolutely nothing.
“I want to time travel.”
So this is what this is about? Time travel?
“No.” Dad said instantly.
“But I’m ready. I’ve been practicing my spatial jumps, just like you said.” Five stood up from his chair and blinked to stand next to dad.
“See?” Five said to further prove that he was ready, but dad wasn’t budging.
“A spatial jump is trivial when compared with the unknowns of time travel. One is like sliding along the ice, the kid akin to descending blindly into the depths of the freezing water and reappearing as an acorn.”
What dad said made absolutely no sense. He was either blabbing a bunch of shit to shut Five up, or he was saying something about time travel that Five nor the rest of us understood.
Five didn’t seem to understand either “Well, I don’t get it.”
“Hence the reason you’re not ready.”
Five looked at me and I silently pleaded to him to stop what he was doing. He looked at Vanya, who was sitting across from me and she shook her head no. Thank god she was on my side. Maybe she can help me knock some sense into Five, since no one else was trying to intervene.
Five turned back to dad. “I’m not afraid.”
“Fear isn’t the issue. The effects it might have on your body, even on your mind, are far too unpredictable. Now, I forbid you to talk about this anymore.”
Five looked at me one last time and I knew what he was going to do before he did it. He gave dad one last look before he walked out of the dining room.
“Number Five!” Dad after him. Everyone turned their heads to look at Five leaving. Oh so now you want to pay attention I thought.
“You haven’t been excused.” Dad called out again, but Five ignored him. I pushed back my chair and all eyes fell on me as I quickly walked around the table to follow Five outside.
“Number Eight! You haven’t been excused either!”
But I ignored him and walked out of the lounge.
“Come back here!”
I ran to the double doors of the house to catch up to Five and I saw him about to open the house gates.
“Five!” I called out.
Five turned around and his eyes softened when he his eyes laid upon me. I walked down the steps and met him where he was stood.
“Y/n get back inside.”
“Where are you going?”
“Y/n-“
“No answer my question. Where are you going?”
Five sighed. “I’m going to go time travel.”
My eyes widened at his words. “What?! Are you insane?! You don’t even know how to time travel! Would if you—“
“Hey, hey, hey.” Five placed his hands on my shoulders to calm me down.
“It will be okay. I have to do this! I have to try now otherwise I’ll never learn. I’ll be back alright.”
I looked into his eyes and knew that no amount of convincing can ever make him change his mind. He was too determined to back out now and no one, not even me, will be able to stop him. I didn’t want to let him go, but I knew I had to.
“Promise?” I asked with pleading eyes.
Five smiled and nodded. “Yes I promise.”
I nodded and brought Five into a kiss and he reciprocated. We stayed in our own little bubble for a few moments before he pulled away and rested his forehead against mine. He stepped back a bit and grabbed my face to look at me one last time
I saw his eyes scan over my face as if he was trying to memorize every single detail he could find as if he wanted to remember what I look like for when he’s gone. Both of us don’t know what is going to happen once he leaves. We don’t know how long he’ll be gone, where (or when) he’ll even go, or if he will even be able to do it. But one thing for sure is that we both truly love and care for each other.
I took a moment to analyze his face as well. His dark brown hair swept to the side as it tussles in the wind. The freckles staining his nose and cheeks that resemble constellations. His hazel eyes staring back at me with nothing, but love and admiration. But there’s a hint of something else: fear.
Five may be more than determined to time travel, but I know that he is also afraid. He has no idea what he’s doing and try’s to hide it because he doesn’t want to admit that he’s afraid to himself. Deep down he just wants to make dad proud and the way Five’s sees it, Five can only do that by proving dad wrong and time traveling without him. Five placed one final kiss on my forehead before he let go of the sides of my face.
“Please be careful and don’t be long.” Please come back to me and don’t do anything stupid.
“I promise.” I won’t let you down and I’ll be back before you know it.
Five turned to open the gates and began to walk down the street. He paused before he turned around to look at me one last time. I gave him a smile with a small wave to encourage him to continue walking and he smiled in return before turning back to the street. He began to walk and then he walked through the blue light that always appeared whenever he blinked. And just like that Five disappeared in thin air.
I looked down the street one last time before I walked back into the house, while I anticipated the wrath I was about to receive from my dad.
If only I knew that Five wouldn’t be coming back anytime soon like he promised.

Vanya/Five
“I survived on scraps. Canned food. Cockroaches, anything I could find. You know that rumor that Twinkies have an endless shelf life?”
Vanya nodded.
“Well, it’s total bullshit.”
“I can’t even imagine.” Vanya said.
“You do whatever it takes to survive, or you die. So we adapted.”
Vanya was confused when she heard the word we. She thought Five said he was alone all those years.
“Whatever the world threw at us, we found a way to overcome it.”
“We?”
Five ignored her obvious question.
“You got anything stronger?” He asked as he gestured at his coffee mug.
Vanya sighed before she went to go get a bottle of alcohol. She decided to grab a glass for herself to cope with the idea that the world will end in eight days. Vanya poured Five his glass first and handed it to him, before she poured a glass for herself.
“You think I’m crazy.” Five said.
“No..i-it’s just…it’s a lot to take in.”
Five started to get frustrated. Of course Vanya wouldn’t get it.
“Exactly what don’t you understand?”
“Why didn’t you just time travel back?”
Five looked at Vanya like she was an idiot. Like he didn’t think to try that the moment he got stranded into the future.
“Gee, wish I’d thought of that. Time travel is a crapshoot. I went into the ice and never acorn-ed. You didn’t think I tried to get back to my family? Tried to get back to the love of my life?”
Vanya blinked before she could process what Five said. Back when they were teenagers, Five and Y/n never explicitly stated that they were in a relationship, but everyone knew. It was kind of an unspoken truth that everyone accepted. At first the couple tried to hide it, but over time they simply didn’t care.
To the public they might have just looked like really close friends who happened to be touchy with each other, but if you lived in the academy you could tell the difference. They stared into each other’s eyes for a second longer. Their touches lingered a fraction later. The knowing looks they shared showed nothing, but fondness for each other.
Vanya thinks back and realizes that this is the first time Five has ever alluded to a relationship between the two actually existing and she could tell how in love Five is with Y/n. Even after all this time Five is still enamored by her and it was kind of admirable that he still feels the same way.
Vanya wanted to ask more about Y/n, but decided against it, because she knew Five would get defensive if she pried. So, she decided to change the subject by asking a question that’s been bugging her ever since Five returned.
“If you grew old there, you know, in the apocalypse, how come you still look like a teenager?”
Five was getting more frustrated that he had to repeat himself again.
“I told you already.” He walked over to the kitchen counter and grabbed the bottle of alcohol to pour himself another cup.
“I must have gotten the equations wrong.”
“I mean dad always used to say that…time travel can mess up your mind. Well maybe that’s what’s happening?”
Vanya tried to come up with a way to explain the whole apocalypse situation. She didn’t want to admit the world’s possible doom and bringing up what her dad mentioned all this years ago made sense. She didn’t want to believe that Five was right about the end of the world. It was all too much.
Five took a sip from his drink and set it on the counter. “This was a mistake. You’re too young…” Five walked past Vanya and began to walk to the door. “…too naive to understand.”
“No Five…Five, wait.” Vanya said to try and stop Five from leaving. Five listened and stopped in front of the door.
“I haven’t seen you in a long time, and I don’t want to loose you again. And I know Y/n doesn’t want to loose you again no matter how many times she might deny it. That’s all.”
Five could tell Vanya was using Y/n to get him to stay and he thought about his circumstances for a second. Maybe a good nights rest will do the trick. Five knew that he needed to be fully rested in order to be on high alert. However, there was still so much to accomplish in such little time.
“And you know what, it’s getting late, and…I have lessons early, and I need to sleep, and I’m sure you do, too.”
Vanya walked over to the couch and began to turn it into a makeshift bed for Five to sleep on.
“We’ll talk in the morning again. Okay? I promise.”
Five remained silent, so Vanya decided to walk to her room to get ready for bed.
“Night.” Five said.
Five waited for Vanya to close the door of her bedroom behind her before he sat down on the couch. He grabbed a scrunched up piece of cloth from his pocket and unwrapped it to reveal a glass eyeball.
He thought back to when he first found the eyeball in Luther’s hand. When he saw all of his sibling’s dead bodies. When he saw Y/n’s dead body.

Five
When I recognized the familiar umbrella academy tattoo on the wrist of a buried body, I immediately knew that it was my family under all the rubble. Dread filled my heart as I looked down at the bodies of my siblings. No way this is real I thought. No way this is actually happening.
I crouched down and rummaged around all the broken brick and debris to try and find her. After some digging, I finally found Y/n under a huge stone and I immediately recognized her face. I tried with all my might to pull the stone off of her body and after a few attempts I managed to lift it off of Y/n. Once the stone was off, I crouched down and cradled her in my arms.
I couldn’t tell how old she was, but she was definitely a lot more older than seventeen, but that didn’t change how I viewed her. She looked even more gorgeous than when I last saw her, if that was even possible.
I stared down at Y/n’ lifeless body in disbelief. She was just breathing and talking to me five minutes ago and now she’s lifeless in my arms. I half expected her to open her eyes and say that this was all a practical joke and that she was alive and breathing. To kiss all my fears away and tell me that this was all just a dream, but she didn’t do any of those things. Instead she continued to lay lifeless in my arms.
Tears began to pool my eyes as I slowly began to realize what I jumped to. I was in the future alone and everyone was dead. Something must have happened that caused the end of the world and Y/n is dead because of it. My whole family is dead because of it.
I thought about all the memories and moments that I had with Y/n that I would probably never get again. I would never get to hear her laugh ring across the room again. Never hear her voice again tell me that everything will be alright. I would never hear her heartbeat as I laid against her chest oblivious to everything outside of our little world. I would never get to say I love you again. And that crushed me.
But maybe things don’t have to be this way. If I just time travel back to the past then my family will be alive and well instead of dead. I can travel back and they’ll all be eating dinner in the dining room and I could fit right in like I never even left. And maybe I’ll let them know what I saw and we can all figure out how to prevent all of this from becoming reality. I have to go back. Back to the past to my family. Back to Y/n.
I gently placed Y/n on the ground before I stood up and tried to blink back into the past. Blue light illuminated from my hands, but nothing happened. I tried again and still nothing. I stared down at my hands as I found myself in the worst possible position I could ever be in.
I was stranded in the future and didn’t have the energy or skills to get back. I didn’t know how to get back and now I was stuck. I cried out in frustration and almost laughed at the situation. Of course I would get stranded into the future. I didn’t want to admit it before, but dad was right: I wasn’t ready.
I looked down at her lifeless body and I felt my whole world shatter when I realized that I’ll never get to be with her again. All the things that we talked about doing together won’t go as planned like we wanted it to. She could still go on and do all those things, but now she had to do it alone and without me by her side.
I fell to the ground, on my knees, and started off into the distance. I lost everything that mattered to me in a matter of seconds. I sat like that for a while thinking about the life that was once mine. I can’t remember how long I stayed like that until my eyes landed on Luther’s hand. His hand was clutched as if he was holding something.
Curious, I walked over to Luther’s body and opened his hand and was met with an eyeball.

I turned over the eyeball in my hand and read the manufacturing label, Meri Tech, and under that was the serial number. I don’t know what role this eye plays with the end of the world, but I have an inkling that whoever caused the apocalypse must have had a glass eye. The only way to determine who this belongs to is to go to the manufacturer.
I thought about Y/n’s lifeless body in the future. Right now she is alive and well, but she’ll be dead in eight days if I don’t do anything and I can’t let that happen.
As much as I wanted to stay and get a good nights sleep, I knew that I had to do what must be done to prevent my family’s deaths. I carefully wrapped up the eyeball, placed it back in my pocket and quietly snuck out of Vanya’s apartment without her knowing.

Klaus and I were going to go back to the hotel, but we decided to turn back to our childhood home when we realized that the hotel was actually not that close.
Allison also didn’t leave last night, due to her flight being rescheduled for today, so Klaus and I weren’t alone in the house, so it made the overnight stay more bearable, and it gave me a chance to hang out with Allison a bit more.
Allison and I had a nice conversation during breakfast and we planned to meet up in a couple of months when we’re both available. After breakfast Allison decided to finish packing up the last of her things, so I retreated back to my old bedroom, since I was already packed and I had nothing better to do.
I came across my old bookshelf filled with all the books I read when I was still living here. From fantasy, to horror, to romance I read it all. I used to be such a bookworm growing up and now I can’t even remember the last time I picked up a book. Yes life did get in the way, but I still had some free time on my hands to read. Maybe I should pick up a book again when I get back home
My fingers slowly grazed over the spines of my book collection and I took the time to read each book title carefully. Starting from the left, I came to the right side of one shelf when my finger stopped at the book at the end. Pride and Prejudice. I quickly retracted my hand and instantly looked away when I noticed it was that book. The same book I read the day he didn’t come back. I reread book all the time, however I think twelve years ago was the last rime I ever read that book.
I still couldn’t believe he was here. After all these years he’s back and he still looks exactly the same. It was as if he was preserved this whole time. Five went out yesterday to do god only knows what. He said he was getting a cup of coffee, but it doesn’t take that long to get a cup of joe. He was definitely doing something and I had no idea what.
But I didn’t want to dwell on what Five was doing or Five in general. It took me so long to pick up the pieces that he had left behind when he vanished. Back then when I was seventeen I thought my world stopped when he disappeared from my life. Five was everything to me and after he left my life felt like one big unsolvable puzzle.
At first all I wanted to do was sink into my sorrows, but mom and my siblings made sure I didn’t fall into the deep end. Slowly and surely they helped me pick up the pieces of my heart that shattered from heartbreak. Piece by piece I became whole again.
Now I’m no longer broken and I’m not going to let myself fall and crumble now that he waltzed back into my life. It took me a long time to get to where I am today, and I’m happy that I managed to build such a wonderful life for myself. I have a loving husband and a beautiful daughter and a life to get back to without him. It’s also now my responsibility to take care of Klaus now that he’s out of rehab. Speaking of Klaus, I haven’t seen him all day and now I’m starting to get worried.
I walk out of my room and begin to search for my brother. After looking around for a bit, I finally found him in the lounge, in his underwear, looking for something. Probably drugs. He looked around frantically and his hands were shaking. It’s been quite some time since he’s dabbled in drugs consistently and he’s probably having symptoms of withdrawal. He’s looking for drugs to dull the pain. To dull the dead.
“Klaus.”
Klaus jumped after being caught rummaging through the cabinet and he pretended like he wasn’t doing anything suspicious, but I caught him red handed.
“Christ on a cracker! Y/n! You scared me!”
I simply raised my eyebrow at him and I motioned at the cigarette in his hand.
“I mean…it’s so good to see you! This..” he gestured to the cigarette in his hand.
“This is nothing and I was just looking around, you know, seeing if things are the way they were when we left and they are!”
“Don’t lie to her.” Ben said to Klaus. “Just tell her what you were doing!”
[Y/n couldn’t see her dead brother, but Ben was there, sitting on the couch, beside Klaus, in the lounge. He was present in the lounge through Klaus and he’s been there with him the whole time.
Klaus was the only one who could see Ben because of his ability to communicate with the dead, so Ben was invisible to the rest of the world. He wishes he could help his family instead of only being able to watch from the sidelines, but he figures it’s better to see his family as an invisible ghost than not at all.
That’s why when it looks like Klaus is talking to an imaginary friend, he’s actually taking to Ben. Like in the car with Diego. Ben tries to help his family, by talking to Klaus, and asking Klaus to pass on the message to everyone else, but sometimes (basically always) Klaus doesn’t listen and that frustrates Ben.
Ben has seen Klaus struggle with his addiction time and time again and now it’s getting to the point where it is tiring. He wants to help his struggling brother, but what can he do when he never listens to him and the fact that drugs and alcohol are the only thing that keeps the dead away from haunting him. Ben can suggest to do things, but doesn’t mean Klaus will listen.]
“I’m not going to tell her what I was doing.” Klaus said to no one.
I looked at him weirdly and crossed my arms.
“Uh-huh. Are you sure you weren’t looking for drugs?”
“What?! Pppfftttt no!”
I knew he was lying. I was about to argue against him when someone cleared their throat. I turned around to see Pogo standing near the entrance of the lounge.
“Pogo?” Klaus said
“Klaus. Y/n.”
I nodded at Pogo in return.
“I have a query for Klaus.”
“Oh?” Klaus said shocked.
“Items from your father’s office have gone missing. In particular, an ornate box with pearl inlay.”
Ben turned around from the couch, in front of Klaus, and said, “Really?”
But Klaus ignored Ben.
“Really? You don’t say.” Klaus said and I knew he wasn’t telling the truth and I knew Pogo knew too.
Klaus wandered off right before the funeral and disappeared once again when we got back to the house. If I’m correct, which I know I am, then Klaus pawned dad’s fancy box that he stole from his office and used that money to buy drugs before the funeral. Then after Diego dropped us off, he went to go secretly take the drugs. Oh Klaus.
“Klaus.”
But Klaus ignored me.
“Any idea where it went?” Pogo asked. It’s clear to me that Pogo knows that Klaus took the box and is only asking Klaus questions to be nice.
“No, no, no. No idea. Sorry.”
“Liar.”
“Drop dead.”
“Low Blow.” Ben said in disbelief.
“Would you shut up!” Klaus shouted to Ben, but Y/n and Pogo thought Klaus told Pogo to shut up.
“Excuse me!” Pogo said.
“Pogo, I didn’t mean you, I just…I—I you know there’s been a lot of stuff I’ve been dealing with.” Klaus began as he walked around to the other couch nearby and Pogo and I followed him.
“Just a lot of memories coming up. All those good times.”
“Good times?” I questioned. I know for a fact that Klaus did not have a good time here.
“Well, not so much good times as really awful, terrible, depressing times.” Klaus brought the cigarette to his lips and inhaled.
A part of me wanted to snatch that cigarette out of his hand, because he wasn’t supposed to be taking any substances, but I decided to let him have it since it’s been a rough couple of days and he doesn’t have a substance abuse problem with cigarettes.
“The contents of that box are…priceless.” Pogo said seriously. Almost too seriously.
What could be in that box that is so important?
“Were they to find their way back to the office, whoever took it would be absolved of any blame or consequences.” Pogo hinted as a way to tell Klaus to return it, but what Pogo didn’t know, (nor Y/n) was that the box was gone completely.
“Oh well lucky bastard.” Klaus replied and I rolled my eyes at his response.
“Indeed.” Pogo said. Klaus nervously swallowed before Pogo walked out.
“Klaus what were you thinking.” I whisper yelled as soon as Pogo was out of earshot. He might have left the room, but there were no doors to conceal our conversation.
“I don’t know! I just wanted money for—“
“Drugs.”
Klaus said nothing and that solidified my answer. I scoffed before I began to walk out of the room.
“Wait! Y/n!”
I turned back to look at Klaus.
“What?!”
“I’m sorry.” Klaus genuinely looked sorry and I wanted to forgive him, but I was still mad at him. It’s my job to keep him away from drugs and there’s no way I can bring him back home with me, after he just took drugs, when I have my three year old.
Penelope. I didn’t get a chance to call Noah last night, since we got back at the house so late. I figured I should call Noah now.
I sighed. “It’s fine. Just go find the box and don’t go anywhere. Stay here at the academy.”
Klaus nodded and then I left the lounge. I rubbed my head in frustration. Why can’t Klaus go through one day without getting into trouble. I swear it’s like having another kid. Usually when I struggled with Penelope, Noah was always by my side to help me. He’s my rock and now I need him more than ever. Calmness filtered into my body with the thought of hearing his voice and talking to him on the phone.
Without waiting any time, I made my way to the third floor of the academy so that I could call Noah.

“What’s the Date? The Exact Date?” Five asked as he went to grab some sliced bread.
“The 24th.” Vanya responded.
We were all gathered at the kitchen table as we watched Five move around to make himself a sandwich as if he didn’t just appear from a blue portal in the sky.
“Of what?”
“March.”
“Good.”
“So, are we gonna talk about what just happened?” Luther asked in front of me.
I’m glad Luther asked Five that question. I wanted to ask about what just happened too, but I couldn’t speak. I don’t think anyone would be able to if they saw their boyfriend who went missing, twelve years ago, appear out of the blue, but not having aged at all.
Five ignored Luther as he placed two slices of bread on a cutting board. Luther stood up from his chair.
“It’s been twelve years.” He said.
“It’s been a lot longer than that.” Five responded.
What did he mean by that? But before anyone could ask, Five blinked from in front of Luther and onto a stepping stool to grab something from the shelf.
“I haven’t missed that.” Luther said.
“Where’d you go?” Diego asked.
“The future. It’s shit by the way.” Five then blinked from the stepping stool and back to the table with marshmallows in his hand.
“Called it.” Klaus said.
“I should‘ve listened to the old man.” Five said as he walked to open the fridge, “You know, jumping through space is one thing, jumping through time is the toss of the dice.” He opened a jar of peanut butter, he got from the fridge, and looked up at Klaus who was sitting on the table right in front of him.
“Nice dress.” He said before he began to spread the peanut butter on his sandwich.
Unbelievable. The first person he acknowledges is Klaus and not me. I could not believe this! If I could speak I would have definitely said something, but I couldn’t.
“Oh well, danke!” Klaus said appreciatively.
“What how did you get back?” Vanya asked.
“In the end I had to project my consciousness forward into a suspended quantum state version of myself that exists across every possible instance of time.”
What he said made absolutely no sense. That was something I did not miss.
“That makes no sense.” Diego said.
“Well, it would if you were smarter.” Five responded.
I didn’t miss his rudeness either. Diego stood up to go after Five, but I quickly stopped him and I somehow found my voice again.
“That wasn’t a very nice thing to say Five. Not all of us can be as smart as you.”
Five stopped what he was doing and looked up with me. He smiled and I looked at him like he was crazy.
“It’s nice to see that you’ve never changed.” Five said.
“Can’t say the same about you.” I shot back as I sat down.
No one said anything. They were probably all shocked I said anything at all. Everyone knew about my past relationship with Five and how it affected me. They all probably thought I would crumble on the spot, but it’s been twelve years and I have a life with a husband and a daughter. That wasn’t going to change due to Five suddenly waltzing back into my life.
“How long were you there?” Luther finally asked.
“Forty years. Give or take.”
Forty years?! We all looked at Five shocked. Even Luther and Diego sat back down after hearing such bizarre news.
“So what are you saying? That you’re fifty eight?” Luther asked.
“No, my consciousness is fifty eight. Apparently, my body is now seventeen again.”
Five grabbed his now finished peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich and walked to the nearest window. He still ate peanut butter and marshmallows sandwiches. I wanted to smile, but I fought it back.
“Wait, how does that even work?” Vanya asked. But Five ignored her.
“Delores kept saying the equations were off. Eh. Bet she’s laughing now.”
Delores? Who the hell was Delores?
“Delores?” I asked.
But he ignored me as well. Asshole. He picked up a newspaper from the table with a picture of dad’s face on it.
“Guess I missed the funeral.”
“How’d you know about that?” Luther asked.
“What part of the future do you not understand? Heart failure huh?”
“Yeah.” Diego said.
“No.” Luther argued.
I rolled my eyes. I can’t believe Luther was still on about this. Whoever killed dad wasn’t one of us. We don’t care enough to possibly do something like that to dad.
“Nice to see nothing’s changed.” Five said as he walked out of the kitchen. You have got to be kidding me!
“Uh, that’s it? That’s all you have to say?” I asked.
Five stopped at the doorway and turned to look at me. “It’s nice to see you again Y/n.” He then took a bite of his sandwich and walked out.
“Well. That was interesting.” Luther said.
“Are you okay?” Vanya asked me, but I said nothing as I exited the kitchen through a different door outraged.

Five
I opened my closet door, for a new change of clothes, because I was currently swimming in the suit that I was wearing, and I was disappointed to see my old Umbrella Academy Uniforms. With a groan I was left with no choice, but to put one of them on.
I’ve been dreaming for years for this day and now it’s finally come. Today I saw Y/n for the first time after forty years and she looked absolutely beautiful. She definitely aged nicely, which I already knew, but it was nice to see her alive and breathing instead of dead under a bunch of rubble. It hasn’t happened Five. You can prevent her death and your sibling’s deaths I thought.
I definitely had a lot of work to do, but I had no idea where to start. A change of scenery should be a start. There were too many memories in my childhood bedroom. Too many memories of Y/n.
I blinked from my bedroom and into the lounge. I took in my surroundings and noticed that it looked exactly like how I remembered it from my memories. All of the furniture was in the same place, the books were organized just like how dad liked it and the room had the same familiar smell of alcohol from the bar and wood.
However, what was different about the room was a portrait that hung above the fireplace. I looked up surprised to see a painted portrait of myself. It must have been painted after my disappearance, because that was not here when I lived here. I wonder why it was painted. Maybe to remind everyone about my failure? That sounds about right.
Suddenly I heard faint footsteps and I silently prayed it was Y/n. It could give me a chance to explain everything to her. Where I’ve been. Why I’m here. But I also wanted to know more about her. I knew about snippets of her life from Vanya’s book, but Vanya published that when everybody was twenty two. They were all almost thirty now and a lot can happen in eight years. I turned around and was slightly disappointed to see Vanya. Although I wished it was Y/n, Vanya is a close second.
“Nice to know dad didn’t forget me.” I said, “Read your book by the way. Found it in a library that was still standing. I thought it was pretty good, all things considered. Yeah definitely ballsy, giving up the family secrets. Sure that went over well.”
“They hate me. Well except for Y/n.”
A slight smile appeared on my face. Of course Y/n wouldn’t blame Vanya. That’s just who she is.
“There are worse things that can happen with everyone else.”
“You mean like what happened to Ben?”
That’s one thing I read about in Vanya’s book that I was shocked about. I still couldn’t believe he was dead to this day and I wasn’t even around for that.
“Was it bad?” I asked. Vanya nodded.
There seemed to be nothing else for me to say, so I gave Vanya a quick nod before walking out of the lounge.
“She misses you you know.” Vanya said.
“Who?” I asked feigning ignorance.
“Who else? Y/n. After she left…she was a mess. She barely got out of bed. Barely ate. She cried herself to sleep. She fell apart without you.”
What Vanya was saying was my worst fear. I knew my disappearance must have caused Y/n some pain. I myself was devastated when I came to the conclusion that I might never see Y/n again and it took me years to accept that. After a long while I finally found peace with the situation, but a part of me is still hurting that I missed being a part of her life. Of her being a part of my life. Of us living our lives together and accomplishing all the things we talked about.
I know she had to be just as heartbroken as me after my disappearance all those years ago, but I did not know it was to the point where she “stopped living”. More guilt was added to the guilt that I already had about leaving Y/n and unintentionally breaking her heart. I wish I could go back in time and comfort the eighteen year old Y/n who was in pain, but I couldn’t do that. The past is in the past and we’re both grown up now (especially me). But if I can’t help the Y/n back then, then maybe I could comfort the Y/n in present day if she will let me.
“After you left,” Vanya continued. “Y/n and I would leave peanut butter and marshmallows sandwiches every night at the front door, with the hope that you would one day return. She was afraid that something may have harmed you or worse, something could have killed you. Y/n may not have seemed happy to see you earlier, but I know deep down inside that she was happy to know that you are okay and alive.”
I thought about seventeen year old Y/n and Vanya in the kitchen making my favorite sandwich. Walking to the main hall and leaving it out for me with the hopes of me returning. It’s nice to know that I wasn’t easily forgotten.
I thought about what Y/n could have possibly accomplished in life. I know she applied to five colleges, but which one did she go to? What was her major? What does she do now? Did she meet someone? Is she married? Does she have kids? Is she happy? Did she complete the bucket list that we created under the covers when we were teenagers? Does she ever think about me? About us?
Then I asked a question that I was too afraid to hear the answer to, but I needed to know. I read about her relationship in Vanya’s book, but I needed to know if she was in that relationship now or with someone else.
“Is she alone?” I asked.
“Alone?” Vanya looked confused.
“Is she with someone?”
Vanya understood what I was trying to ask and pity shown on her face. “Yeah. She’s married. She’s been with him for eight years now. She has a daughter with him.”
My fears became true. She was with someone who wasn’t me, married in fact, but I wasn’t surprised. I didn’t expect her to wait for me all these years, because we made a promise to each the all those years ago. I felt relieved that she wasn’t alone and had someone by her side to be there for her, but it didn’t hurt any less.
“Is she happy?” I asked.
Vanya nodded.
“Well I guess that’s all that matters.” I said as I began to walk out of the lounge.
“Wait.”
I stopped again.
“We’re having a memorial service for dad in case you want to come. Luther is running it.”
We all stepped out into the backyard, where Ben’s statue was, to hold a memorial service for dad. I thought this whole thing was stupid, since everybody doesn’t care about dad, except maybe Luther, but I bit my tongue. It was raining, fitting for such an occasion, so we all carried umbrellas except for Diego and Luther. Another one of their idiotic games to see who is (still) the true leader.
“Did something happen?” Mom asked confused. We all looked around at each other confused at her comment.
“Dad died. Remember?” Allison asked.
“Oh. Yes, of course.” Mom said as recognition showed on her face.
“Is mom okay?” Allison asked.
“Yeah, yeah, she’s fine. She just needs to rest. You know, recharge.” Diego answered from next to mom.
“She hasn’t been recharged already?” I asked, from the other side of mom, “I know she was acting strange earlier.”
“No not yet.” Diego said.
I simply nodded. Pogo came and joined us with his umbrella. “Whenever you’re ready dear boy.” He said to Luther.
As we waited for Luther to begin, I felt a pair of eyes staring at me. I turned to my right and saw Five staring at me. I stared back. His eyes then moved to my gloved hand that was holding my umbrella and he frowned. I didn’t know what he was looking for, but he didn’t seem to be able to find it. His eyes then went back to Luther. Strange.
I looked back at Luther and he was holding the earn containing dad’s ashes and was staring at it as if he had no idea what to say. Well he better know what to say since he is the one who put this all together. Luther opened the top and poured the ashes onto the cold wet ground. I guess it was a proper place to put him. On the same grounds where he died and made our lives miserable.
“Probably would have been better with some wind.” Luther tried to joke.
No one said anything. Although his joke didn’t work his words were correct. Since there was no wind, and it was raining, the ashes began to look like wet cement. Now that’s a proper place for you-know-who I thought.
“Does anyone wish to speak?” Pogo asked. No one said anything.
“Very well.” Pogo began, “In all regards, Sir Reginald Hargreeves made me what I am today. For that alone, I shall forever be in his debt. He was my master…and my friend, and I shall miss him very much.” Probably the only person who would truly miss our dad. Pogo was probably the closest to dad out of all of us, except maybe mom if that counts. Pogo continued.
“He leaves behind a complicated legacy—“
“He was a monster.” Diego interrupted.
He wasn’t wrong about that, but it wasn’t right to interrupt Pogo. Pogo has been nothing but comforting and welcoming to us growing up as kids and even now. However, I was kind of glad Diego did intervene, because I don’t think I could have heard another nice thing being said about that man.
“He was a bad person and a worse father. The world’s better off without him.” Diego said.
“Diego.” Allison tried to stop him.
“My name is Number Two.” Diego responded, “You know why? Because our father couldn’t be bothered to give us actual names. He had mom do it.”
At the sound of her “name” being mentioned, mom spoke up. “Would anyone like something to eat?”
“No it’s okay, mom.” I said with a warm smile.
“Oh, okay.” She said as she rapidly nodded. She definitely needed to get recharged.
“Look you wanna pay your respects?” Diego said as he stepped forward, “Go ahead. But at least be honest about the kind of man that he was.”
“You should stop talking.” Luther said.
“Oh shut up Luther!” I said, “You are not the only one who is allowed to speak their mind here.! And Diego is admitting the truth and you are just too scared to admit the truth because you don’t want to disappoint dear old dad. You are still living in that Number One spot and all I have to say to you is grow the hell up! Nobody cares about that anymore. Move on with your life and stop being such an asshole who has a stick up their ass all the time!”
Luther looked shocked at my outburst, but I did not care. I said what I said. I have been waiting to say those words to him for years and now that I have finally said them, a huge weight has been lifted on my shoulders.
I looked at the rest of my siblings, and they also seemed just as shocked as Luther at my outburst, which was valid since I rarely spoke up to tell someone off. I heard Klaus began to laugh, but other than him it was silent. Five had a look of fondness on his face. I wanted to yell at him too, but I kept my mouth shut. Now was not the time or place.
“I think we’re all just a little tense right now. Why don’t we all just calm down.” Luther said, but Diego was fed up.
“No Y/n’s right and you know what? You of all people should be on my side, Number One.”
“I am warning you.”
“After everything he did to you? He had to ship you a million miles away.”
“Diego stop talking.” Luther said angrily, but Diego continued.
“That’s how much he couldn’t stand the sight of you!”
What Diego said was cutting, but it needed to be said. Luther needed to understand that dad wasn’t as brilliant as he thought him to be. Even when dad was dead, Luther was still doing his bidding. It was sad really. Well it’s like they say: ‘Tough love is the best love’. Diego’s last words must have hit a nerve, because Luther swung at him twice, but Diego quickly dodged it.
Growing up, Diego was always the best at hand to hand combat and I was a close second. My gymnastics skills helped me quite a bit. It was clear that Diego was just a good and maybe even better than when he was a kid, but Luther moved differently now compared to back then. Instead of being quick and agile he was quite slow and rigid.
Allison and I got everyone to get back, so that none of us would get hurt while Diego and Luther were fighting. It seems that some things never outgrow childhood because these two were still going at it.
Diego always resented Luther for having the ‘Number One’ position and he thought that he could do a better job as Number One than Luther. It wasn’t Luther’s fault. Dad probably just put us in random baby carriages and that’s how we received our designated numbers.
“Boys, stop this at once!” Pogo shouted.
But it was no use. They kept on fighting. They either didn’t hear Pogo, or chose to ignore him, and I think it was the latter.
“Come on, big boy!” Diego taunted with his fists up.
Luther swung at him, but he was too slow, probably due to his now larger form, and Diego jumped up on top of him and punched him several times on the back.
“Stop it!” I shouted, but it was no use.
“Hit him! Hit him!” Klaus shouted.
I turned to Klaus and gave him a really look.
“What it’s a good fight!” He responded.
Luther swung again, but Diego dodged him and gave him several hits to the face. But Luther must have learned his lesson because he grabbed Diego and threw him to the ground with much force.
My hand, on instinct, grabbed onto the nearest hand next to me. I looked up with wide eyes to realize that I grabbed Five’s hand. My body seemed to have moved on its own with muscle memory. Before Five disappeared, I used to grab onto Five’s hand whenever Luther and Diego broke into their fights. Five also realized the significance of my action, but before he could say anything I pulled my hand away.
Diego quickly recovered from his fall with a roll and dodged Luther again. Diego then kicked him on the side and once again on the face. Diego through a punch, but Luther blocked it with his hand and punched Diego on the side. Using his super strength to his advantage, Luther grabbed on to Diego’s shirt and lifted him up into the air. Diego fought and struggled for a while until he broke free and hit Luther a few times.
“Get!” Punch. “Off!” Punch. “Me!” Diego shouted.
Diego hit Luther in the face and they both separated from each other to catch their breath.
“We don’t have time for this.” Five said as he began to walk back inside to the kitchen. I guess there’s that. Diego was standing in front of Ben’s statue and I feared that something might happen to it if they didn’t move the fight elsewhere.
“Come here big boy!” Diego taunted.
Luther walked up to Diego and threw a punch into the air, but Diego quickly dodged it . My fear came true as Luther’s fist went straight into Ben’s statue sending it straight to the ground and decapitating statue Ben. I cried out in disbelief.
“And there goes Ben’s statue.” Allison said. She began to walk back into the kitchen. I was about to follow her inside when I noticed a knife in Diego’s hand.
“Diego No!” I shouted. But it was too late.
Diego’s knife soared into the air with great accuracy and sliced Luther’s arm. Luther stands in shock at what Diego did. His hand immediately jumps to the cut as if he had something to hide. He said nothing for a few moments before he retreated inside as well.
“You never know when to stop do you?” Vanya asked Diego.
“You got enough material for your sequel yet?” He asked.
“He was my father too.” Vanya said before walking back inside.
I looked back at Ben’s statue with his head a few feet away from the rest of his body. I walked over to the statue, lowered my umbrella to the ground and I grabbed his bronze head into my hands as I felt the raindrops drop onto me.
“Y/n.”
I turned to see Diego looking down at me with regret on his face. He didn’t deliver the punch, but he still felt guilty for what he did and I couldn’t be mad at him for it. It wasn’t his fault. I rested Ben’s head on the ground and rose to stand up.
“It’s not your fault. Although you didn’t need to break into a fight, Luther needed to be brought down a peg or two.”
I grabbed my umbrella from the ground and then walked back to the kitchen doors, leaving Diego out in the pouring rain.

My siblings and I all gathered at the bottom of the staircase to the attic. Dad and Vanya stood a few stories up the stairs. The instructions were to wait for Vanya to blow the whistle before we all raced to get to the top first.
“Good luck.” Five said to me.
“You too.” I said with a grin.
The whistle blew and we all raced to the top of the stairs. It was hard to move since we were all packed into a little corner to start with, but we all managed to break free. Luther took the lead first until Diego caught up to him. I was in third place until Five blinked up to first place. Now I was in fourth.
“That’s not fair, Five’s cheating!” Diego complained.
“He adapted.” Dad shouted from further up the stairs.
I really wish my powers could have helped me like Five’s did, but I was left with having to rely on speed and endurance. In the end Five won and he rubbed it in our faces, especially Diego.
After another hour of fighting practice, dad told us to change into our uniforms and to meet him at the main entrance of the house. We were all confused because this was a change from our normal daily routine, but we obliged nonetheless. I shut the door of my room, after I changed, and I noticed Five waiting for me.
“What took you so long?” He asked.
“I changed. Not all of us can change quickly.”
“Does that apply to racing up the stairs as well?”
I playfully glared at him.“You are never going to let any of us live without hearing about your victory are you.”
“Nope.” Five said with the pop of p.
“Hey Y/nn. Five.” Klaus said as he came between us and wrapped his arms would our shoulders. Five shrugged Klaus off, but I stayed connected with Klaus.
“So….what do you think dad has up his sleeve?” Klaus continued
“Nothing fun that’s for sure.” I responded.
“Well whatever it is, I’m glad we can be free from German class today. I don’t think I can hear another word out of Helga’s mouth without falling asleep.”
I laughed while Five rolled his eyes. The three of us came across the main hall, and as we ascended down the stairs, we saw dad talking to a man with a long greying beard, a black leather vest, and a bunch of tattoos on his arms. A chair was set up with equipment, which consisted of cleaning supplies and a big needle.
Luther and Diego were already present, so I separated myself from Klaus, and went to go ask them if they knew what was going on.
“Dad wants to give us all matching tattoos.” Diego responded.
“He wants us to be bonded as a team.” Luther added
Dread filled my body. Tattoos?!
“Hey, hey, hey it’s okay Y/nn.” Diego said, “It will be painful, but it will pass. You just have to make sure that your power doesn’t get in a way. Your body can see the needle as a threat.”
I nodded absentmindedly. My power adapted to prevent me from harm at the sight of danger. It came in handy in every day life, but I was still learning to control it. Sometimes I could manage it, but other times I struggled with blocking my powers.
Shortly after I spoke with Diego, everyone was told to sit down in chairs, set in a line by our mother, and one by one the tattoo artist would put the tattoo on each of us. Klaus went first, then Allison and Diego. Five was next, I was after Five, then Ben and Luther. Vanya wouldn’t be getting a tattoo because she was not officially a part of our team.
I feel bad for Vanya. She sometimes expresses to me how she feels left out from the rest of us when we go on missions, while she stays behind. She never gets to participate in any of the cool stuff that the rest of us do, and she wishes she can feel like she’s not an outsider. I guess that’s understandable when you are the only child, in the house, who was not born with powers. It would make anyone feel like they failed when it wasn’t their fault.
Five had just finished and joined the huddle of Allison, Klaus, and Diego as they tried to make each other feel better. Dad summoned for me to sit in the chair that was across from the tattoo artist. Mom gave me an encouraging smile, but I can see hesitation and worry in her eyes. I slowly sank into the seat and my heart dropped as the man refilled the needle with ink and turned it on.
The buzzing sound of the needle was all I could hear in my ears as the man grabbed my arm and rested it on the table, so it can be easier for him to draw. As the needle inched closer, I closed my eyes and tried to fight back my powers, so the needle can penetrate my skin.
And sure enough, I felt a stinging on my wrist. Okay so it worked. I sighed with relief while I squinted my eyes to help with the pain. It felt like an eternity, but eventually the man, wiped the finished tattoo, and blood off my wrist one last time. I looked down at my wrist to see an umbrella with a circle around it for the Umbrella Academy.
The man sent me off to join the others and as I got out of the chair, Five was the first to approach me and bring me into a hug. At that moment I felt safe and I was glad that my best friend was there for me.

I was in the kitchen while listening to Klaus trying to do some guitar riffs. How he was able to get a guitar on his hands? I had no idea, but I wasn’t going to ask. Klaus plucked the strings, but they did not go well together and it sounded awful.
“Can you please stop Klaus you are killing my ears.” I said.
Klaus looked up from his position, and lowered his guitar.
“Well that is where you are wrong because I find my playing to be quite beautiful.” Klaus retaliated and went back to his previous position and began to play again.
“Y/n is right you know.” A voice said and I knew who it was without needing to look. However I did not turn around because I did not want to give him the satisfaction of my attention.
“Of course you would be on her side Five.” Klaus said as he stopped playing.
“Why wouldn’t I be.” I could hear the smile in his voice. Klaus gave me a look as if he was expecting me to say something, but I remained quiet. No one said a word.
“Are you waiting for something?” I asked Five while I turned around to see him standing in the same position as if he was waiting for my response.
Five cleared his throat. “No..no I’m not. I wasn’t waiting for anything.”
I gave Five a nod, turned back around and prompted Klaus to continue playing. Even though we both knew I thought his playing was atrocious, I was glad that he noticed my silent plea and continued to play. It was a lot better than being left with silence with Five. I heard rummaging around the Kitchen so I assumed Five began to look for something. I heard footsteps and saw Allison walk into the kitchen.
“Where’s Vanya?” Allison asked.
“Oh, she’s gone.” Klaus said.
“Didn’t even bother to say goodbye.” I muttered.
I was hurt when I found out Vanya left without saying goodbye to me. We rarely spend time with each other, but we keep in touch over the phone from time to time. I know our relationship was strained, but I thought we had a strong enough bond to say goodbye to each other.
“That’s unfortunate.” Five said as he walked towards the table.
“Yeah.” Allison responded.
But we all soon realized that Five wasn’t talking about Vanya. “An entire square block. Forty-two bedrooms, 19 bathrooms, but no, not a single drop of coffee.”
I rolled my eyes at his comment. Apparently coffee mattered more to him than his own sister, or maybe he wasn’t listening to us at all, which I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case.
“Dad hated caffeine.” Allison stated.
“Well he hated children too, and he had plenty of us.” Klaus said while he laughed.
No one responded.
“I’m taking the car.” Five said out of nowhere.
“Where are you going?” Klaus asked.
I was curious to know too where Five was going, but I tried to hide it.
“To get a decent cup of coffee.” Five asked as if it was obvious.
“Do you even know how to drive?” Allison asked.
“I know how to do everything.”
“Do you?” I asked.
I looked up at Five and he held an unreadable expression on his face. He then blinked out of the kitchen to god knows where. No one said anything, but Klaus gave me a look saying that we will discuss later.
“I feel like we should try and stop him, but then again, I also want to kinda see what happens.” Klaus said as he stood up.
Then we heard the sound of the engine starting, followed by the sound of tires screeching. Five really took a car!
“Maybe we’ll catch him getting pulled over by the police.” I said.
“Now that will be something I want to see happen.” Klaus and I laughed in response.
“Well I just came here to say goodbye.” Allison said.
I rose from the chair and walked around the table to bring Allison into an embrace. “Take care of yourself okay and say hi to Claire for me.”
“You take care of yourself too and can we please stay in touch? I really mean it.”
I looked into Allison’s eyes and I could tell that she was being genuine.“I would love that.” I said with a smile.
Allison smiled in return.
“All right, I guess I’ll see you guys in, what, ten years? When Pogo dies.” Diego said as he walked into the kitchen.
“Not if you die first.” Allison shot back.
“Yeah love you too sis.” Diego said sarcastically as he grabbed a marshmallow from the table.
“Good luck on your next film. Hope it turns out better than your marriage huh?”
“Diego!”
“What?” He looked at me as if he didn’t say the most insensitive thing he could have possibly said to Allison.
The divorce between Allison and her husband Patrick just happened recently and now Patrick was fighting for custody for Claire against Allison. I felt sympathy for Allison, because I would be just as lost as her if I were in her shoes. I wouldn’t know what I would do if Noah was fighting for custody for Penelope. I probably wouldn’t be sane.
“That was out of line.”
Diego shrugged like it was nothing and placed a kiss on the top of my head. I rolled my eyes and went to go console Allison, but she was gone.
“Are-Are we leaving?” Klaus asked Diego.
“No, I’m leaving, me by myself.”
“Oh fabulous! Me and Y/n will get our things.”
“Wait what?” I said.
But Diego was already out the door and Klaus dragged me up to our room to grab our things.
“Hurry up Y/n! Diego isn’t going to wait for us, so we have to act fast!”
“All right all right I’m coming!”
I stopped by my room and grabbed my unpacked bag of clothes before looking in my childhood room one last time. I thought I would feel a sense of longing when I said goodbye to this room, but in reality I felt nothing. With a sigh I shut the door of my room and followed Klaus out to the back of the house.
Klaus ran outside to the car Diego was sitting in. Well I guess he’s our ride for tonight. We don’t have a car since we arrived here by taxi from the airport today, and there was no way in hell we were going to spend the night alone at the house and especially with Luther. Diego was our only way back to the hotel.
“Hey Diego!” Klaus said as he opened the car door. I decided to walk around the car and sit in the passenger seat next to Diego. I couldn’t hear what Klaus was saying, but I knew he must be uttering nonsense, because Diego looked beyond annoyed.
I opened the car door and sat next to Diego. Klaus had his hands on Diego as if he was a principal lecturing a student in his office.
“Oh thank god.” Diego said, “I was going to pull my hair out if I had to spend the night with this moron alone.”
“Uhhhhh! I am offended.” Klaus said.
“Klaus isn’t that bad.”
Diego gave me a really look and I laughed. “Just start the car.”
“Lean back.” Diego said to Klaus.
Klaus took his hand off Diego’s shoulders and leaned back into the middle seat. Diego turned the key before he started to drive away. We drove for a few minutes in silence before Klaus spoke up.
“You know what you guys. I’m kind of hungry.”
“Well we’re not stopping anywhere.” Diego said.
I was going to agree with Diego when I felt a similar sensation of hunger in my stomache. I didn’t want to stop anywhere, so that Klaus could do something stupid. I had to keep him in line so that he wouldn’t go to rehab again, but on the other hand I was hungry and wanted something to eat.
“Maybe it’s not such a bad idea to get something to eat?” I suggested.
Diego looked at me and said nothing before looking back at the road.
“Please Diego. Klaus and I are both hungry and none of us ate dinner tonight, so you must be hungry too.”
Diego said nothing for a few moments before muttering a fine under his breath.“We can go, but I have to take care of something first.”
“Awe really?!” Klaus complained.
“Hey he’s the driver.” I said to try and reason with Klaus, “Without him we don’t have a ride.”
Klaus huffed before he silently agreed. And of course he didn’t stay silent for long.
“You know what I could really go for.”
“What?” I asked.
“Noah’s mom’s lasagna. That was sooooo good.” Klaus said as he fantasized eating a piece of Clara’s lasagna. Then it occurred to me that I haven’t called Noah since Klaus and I landed. I should really try to find a pay phone.
“Hey can we stop by a pay phone while we’re at it?” I asked Diego. Diego nodded.
I sat back and silently listened to Klaus blabbing on about wanting to eat pizza. After a while, Diego brought us to a dock at the edge of the city and said nothing as he got out of car.
“Wait why are we here?” I asked, but Diego ignored me. He walked up to the dock and stared out into the water.
“You know sometimes he makes it insufferable to love him.” I said to Klaus.
“And yet we still do.”
“And yet we still do.”
We sat in the car for a little longer as Diego still stood at the edge of the dock. If I wasn’t hungry earlier, I was definitely hungry now. Klaus must have sensed my irritation, or maybe he was just as hungry as me, because he cracked the window open, snuck his head out.
“Yoo-hoo Diego.” Diego didn’t react. “I hate to rush you through any kind of brooding moment you might be having, but come on man we’re starving!”
Diego looked back with annoyance and Klaus admitted defeat before slipping back in the car and shutting the door.
“At lest you tried.” I said to make him feel better.
“Why don’t you try then! You know he’ll listen to you.”
“Even though I’m Diego’s favorite sibling, he won’t listen to me. He never listens to anyone. We just have to wait until he’s done.” I said with frustration.
Klaus took a deep breath and sighed. “I’m craving…eggs. No! Wait, it’s too late for eggs.”
“Not necessarily! You can have breakfast for dinner.”
But he ignored me. He turned to the empty spot beside him as if someone was there. “Waffles. Huh? You like waffles?”
Who the hell was he talking to? He waited before continuing.
“Ah of course you do. Everyone likes waffles.”
I knew Klaus could talk to the dead, but I don’t know if he is sober enough to communicate with them right now. Earlier he said he was too high to talk to dad, so there’s no way he could be talking to anyone right now. He must be loosing it. Then the walkie talkie that Diego stole from the police, went off from the hood of the car. He can never let go of playing hero I thought.
“Gunshots reported on the 400 block of Milton Avenue, Griddy’s Doughnuts.”
Diego immediately walked back to the car after hearing what the police said. He grabbed the walkie and sat into the driver’s seat.
“Diego thank you for joining us, we have decided on, drum role…” Klaus patted the back of Diego’s seat for effect, “…waffles.”
“Hey I didn’t agree to waffles.” I argued.
Diego turned the key to start the car.
“I’m going to drop you guys off at the bustop. I gotta get back to work.”
“Really.” I said as I gave Diego a look of disbelief.
“What?”
“You’re going to ditch your two siblings, so that you can go and play cop for the night.”
“Okay I’m not playing cop. I’m just-“
“Just what?!” I interrupted.
“What, breaking bones and cracking skulls?” Klaus finished for me.
“Saving lives, baby.” Diego said with pride.
I rolled my eyes.“Fine I’ll let you go do whatever it is that you do at night, but can you at least drop off Klaus and I at our hotel.”
Diego was about to protest, but I stopped him before he could.
“It’s not that far from here and it’s the least you could do after deciding to ditch us.”
Diego thought about my words before finally obliging.
“Well, I guess it’s frozen waffles again.” Klaus said again to the empty space again. Ok he was definitely loosing it. Was he on drugs again? Diego turned to the rear view mirror to see who Klaus was talking to and saw the empty seat. He turned to me with concern, but I just shook my head.
“Yeah, I could do eggs and bacon.” Klaus said as if he was having a conversation with someone.“But I’m trying to cut down on my pig products.
Diego opened the glove compartment and pulled out his umbrella academy mask.
“You still wear that thing?” I asked.
“Yeah. You don’t?”
“I don’t go out every night trying to save lives and I don’t even know where mine is.”
But I was lying. I knew exactly where mine was. It was tucked neatly in a little box in the corner of the shelf in my closet. Never to be opened again. There as a reminder of my old life.
Diego gave me a smirk, as a way to say he’ didn’t believe my last statement, before he started the car and began to drive to the hotel.

Vanya
Vanya didn’t know what to make of the events that occurred all in one day. Well how about a brief overview she thought.
After many years have gone by, she finally saw all of her siblings again, who by the way still hate her for publishing her book. Well except for Y/n, Pogo, and maybe Allison. Five showed up in her childhood home’s backyard after being gone for twelve years. And he still looked the same age as he did when he left, seventeen, but he apparently was fifty eight. Vanya still can’t wrap her head around how that works.
Vanya recalls Five’s return and her mind wanders to Y/n. She wonders how Y/n is holding up after seeing Five. Vanya couldn’t imagine seeing her boyfriend, who disappeared, twelve years later and still look the same way he did the day he left might Vanya add. Vanya decided to try to call Y/n tonight or tomorrow. She wanted to make sure she was okay and she feels a little guilty for leaving without saying goodbye to her. Things were good between them right now and she didn’t want to ruin what they had.
And don’t even get her started on the funeral, but there’s time later to debrief that.
Vanya approached her apartment door and jiggled her keys in the lock before it opened. She went to go flip the switch on the wall when someone turned on the lights for her. Vanya jumped with surprise with the fact that a stranger was in her house, but her fear subsided when she realized that the intruder was Five.
“Jesus” Vanya said as she took a step back.
Five was sitting on the chair in her living room as if he was waiting for Vanya to arrive. How long has he been here Vanya thought.
“You should have locks on your windows.” Five stated.
“I live on the second floor.” Vanya said as she set her keys aside.
“Rapists can climb.”
“You are so weird.” Vanya shut the door. She sat down on the couch and noticed a stain of blood on Five’s suit jacket. Five brushed off the stain as if it was a fly.
“It’s nothing” he simply said.
“Why are you here?”
“I’ve decided you’re the only one I could trust.”
“Why me?”
“Because you’re ordinary.”
Vanya was kind of disappointed that that was the only reason why he wanted to talk to her. Aren’t I worth more than that she thought. And why me? Wouldn’t he want to go to someone like Y/n?
“Because you’ll listen.” Five said after noticing her disappointment.
“Okay. Why didn’t you decide to talk to Y/n.”
Pain appeared on Five’s face and Vanya regretted mentioning Y/n to Five.
“I don’t think she wants anything to do with me or cares about me anymore.”
“That’s not true—“
“Don’t say it’s not true. Like you said earlier, she might still care for me, but she definitely doesn’t trust me. And if she did agree to talk to me, it will take a while to regain back her trust.”
Vanya never thought of it that way, but the more she thought of it the more Five’s words made sense. Vanya never considered the possibility that Y/n might not trust Five anymore, but it’s definitely possible. Five may still be Five, but he has definitely changed from the boy he once was. He never explained what happened to him and where’s he’s been. He’s still Five, but now he’s a mystery. It’s like looking at old photos of Five, but not recognizing the boy in photos. And if Vanya feels that way about him then she can only imagine what Y/n is feeling.
It’s interesting to see that Five was able to figure all of this out while spending less than five minutes with her. It’s incredible that even after all these years Five could still read Y/n like an open book. It’s obvious that Five still loves Y/n the same way he did when they were teenagers. It’s fascinating how love works.
Vanya silently rose from the couch and went to her bathroom to grab her first aid kit to help Five treat his injury. She wasn’t going to question anything, but she wasn’t going to leave him hurt. She couldn’t do that to Five and she knew that’s what Y/n would have done no matter how much she hates him right now.
Vanya returned to the living room and placed an alcohol pad on his wound after Five rolled up his sleeve to cooperate. Five looked up at Vanya and decided it would be a good time to explain why he’s here, while she treats his wound.
“When I jumped foward and got stuck in the future, do you know what I found?”
“No.”
“Nothing. Absolutely nothing. As far as I could tell, I was the last person left alive. I never figured out what killed the human race, but…I did find something else. The date it happens. The world ends in eight days, and I have not idea how to stop it.”
Vanya froze and said nothing as she took in Five’s words. The world was going to end in eight days?! How? Why? By who? How does Five know this? What is Five going to do? Vanya had so many questions, but she didn’t know where to begin, so she thought of the only sane thing she could possibly say.

On the twelfth hour of the first day of October, 1989, forty-three women around the world simultaneously gave birth. None of the women showed any prior signs of pregnancy.
Sir Reginald Hargreaves, eccentric billionaire and playboy adventurer, made it his personal mission to find and adopt as many of these children as possible.
He got eight of them.

“Is there by any chance I can have any money?” Klaus asked.
“So you can buy drugs again. Hell no! I literally picked you up an hour ago.”
“It’s not for druuuuugggssss.” He gestured with his hands. “I just want to buy some new clothes.” He said innocently, but we both knew he wasn’t telling the truth.
“The only way I will lend you money and let you buy something is if I am there at the cash register with you.”
Klaus looked at me disappointedly and I felt bad for telling him no, but I had to, because his addiction was a real problem. However, I do feel sorry for him, because I am aware of the true reason why he fell down that path in the first place.
“Look.” I said as I placed my hand on top of his “I understand why you do drugs, but it’s not healthy for your body. Not to mention that I have a three year old living in my house. There has to be other…methods…or solutions that can keep them at bay. I’ll help you. We can do it together.”
I gave him a comforting smile and he returned it. Klaus then pulled me into a tight hug.
“Thank you Y/n. For everything. You have always been there for me and especially now with letting me live with you. You are definitely my favorite sibling.”
I pulled away from our hug to look at Klaus in the eye. “You are my favorite sibling too.” I said with a smile.
“I would hope so. I am one hundred times better than those other morons.” Klaus said as he started unpacking his small bag of belongings that was sitting on top of the bed in my guest bedroom.
“Hey give them some credit. They aren’t completely dead beat siblings. They have some redeeming qualities.”
“Redeeming qualities such as not calling or reaching out. Only seeing each other when it is necessary. The last time we were all together in the same place was when were seventeen, and that was twelve year’s ago. It is safe to say that they all lost the best sibling of the year award.”
I had a whole response prepared, but the words that I wanted to say remained in my mouth, because everything that Klaus said was true. I can’t even remember the last time I talked to any of my siblings except maybe Vanya. Ever since she published her book we have been talking over the phone from time to time. But the last time I saw her in person was when we were seventeen.
Klaus seemed to notice the dip in my mood. “Well all of them lost, because you are the winner Y/nn. You have been the best sibling of the year every year.”
I smiled at his comment.
“Besides.” He continued “who will make sure that you don’t fall behind and are up to date with all the latest fashion trends.”
I chucked one of the decorative pillows from the bed towards his face. “Hey! That was uncalled for.” I said with laughter and Klaus playfully shrugged.
“Finish unpacking and then come downstairs.” I continued. “I think my mother in law is almost done with dinner.”
“Question. How much longer until the in laws are out of here?”
“This weekend. They are visiting for the week.”
“Oh thank God!”
“Why?”
“They are lovely people, but any parent figure reminds me of you-know-who and I don’t think I can live with a parent figure for too long.”
“Ah.” I said with understanding.
When Klaus and I were twelve, we snuck out to go see a movie, along with our brother Ben, and we saw Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Ever since that day we brought all the books and read them together. The three of us could not wait for J.K. Rowling to finish the series and for the movies to come out. Needless to say we became extreme potter heads.
After Klaus and I both left the academy, it was hard to think and talk about our dad, so we decided to call him you-know-who like Voldemort. It made the experiences we went through as children more bearable.
I gave one last look at Klaus before I left the guest room. I walked into the kitchen where my mother in law, Clara, was cooking dinner. Lasagna.
“Oh is Klaus settled in Y/n?”
“Yes he is just unpacking his bag.”
“Well that’s good. I do hope he likes Lasagna.”
“Oh he’s like me. He likes everything pasta.”
“Perfect! Will he be coming down soon?”
I nodded.
“Good because dinner is ready.” She turned to the living room, and shouted, “David and Noah come set the table!”
“Something smells delicious.” Klaus said as he entered the room. “Can I help with anything?” He asked Clara.
“No you can just sit.” Clara said with a warm smile. She turned off the stove and set her apron on the nearby chair. Clara looked at the empty entrance to the kitchen and sighed in irritation when she noticed that Noah and David didn’t come to help.
“Noah! David! What is taking you two so long?!” Clara asked.
A few moments later my husband Noah walked into the kitchen with an unreadable expression on his face.
“Babe? What’s wrong?” I asked Noah.
“You should really see something Y/n.”
Woah Y/n? He only ever calls me Y/n when something is wrong. My mind instantly went to the worst case scenario and I imagined that something happened to my daughter Penelope, or my father in law David. But Noah turned to Klaus as well.
“You too Klaus.” He said.
I looked at Klaus confused, but he simply shrugged. Together Klaus and I followed Noah to the living room where David, and Penelope were sitting on the couch. Penelope and David seemed okay, so I sighed with relief. Noah grabbed the tv remote, and raised the volume, so Klaus and I could hear better.
The headline said: “Sir Reginald Hargreaves is Dead”
“He was found dead earlier this afternoon, in his home, where the famous Umbrella Academy were trained and raised.” The news’s reporter stated.
Suddenly a picture of us from our first mission 17 years ago appeared on the screen. That day was so long ago that I have forgotten it had even happened. It was so long ago and it’s been a while since I’ve seen you-know-who’s face. And his face.
“Further investigation will continue to figure out the cause of death. Close friends of Hargreaves claimed that he was in the perfect picture of health, so what really caused Sir Reginald Hargreaves to perish?”
I should be happy that the man was dead. Overjoyed and relieved even, but I felt nothing. The cruel man was dead and I felt nothing. I always imagined how this day would go. I would find out the news of his death, scream up and down with joy and maybe even throw a party. But all I wanted to do was to turn the tv off and eat dinner with my family.
I turned to Klaus to see how he was feeling, but he seemed to be feeling the same emotion I was feeling. Nothing. I looked down at the tattoo on my wrist that seemed to burn on my skin. And then the phone rang and I had an inkling on who it was.

I never thought I would step foot into this place again. Not much was said between Klaus and I on the way back to our childhood home, but nothing needed to be said. We were both processing the situation in our own ways. We thanked the cab driver from the sidewalk and we were left with our luggage to look up at the mansion that we once called home.
I could not help, but feel a sense of dread where we were standing. It was here when it happened. When we fought and I saw him disappear to god knows where.
After it happened, the same memory always haunted me in my dreams. I blamed myself for letting him go. For letting him leave and never return. When I was younger I wished I could go back and fix my mistakes, but what is done is done. It’s been years since that day and I cursed myself for getting so affected by it. He’s gone I said to myself. I felt a hand on my shoulder.
“Are you okay?” Klaus asked.
Klaus always knew when my emotions turned and I was always grateful for him having this skill since we were kids.
“I will be.” I said and I walked to the metal gates with the Umbrella Academy symbol embedded in the middle.
I pulled the latch and the gate opened with a push. Klaus and I gathered our luggages and dragged them up to the front double doors at the top of the stoop. The double doors at the top of course had the Umbrella Academy logo. I looked back at Klaus unsure.
“Should we knock or…”
“I think we earned the privilege to open the door ourselves. He is dead after all.”
Without a second thought, Klaus opened the doors and opened the second set of double doors. I followed Klaus and stepped into the very house I swore to never to return to as soon as I left for college. And it still looked the same.
In the center was the same black round table and the metal chandelier right above. The first floor consisted of four arches on each side. To the right was the lounge area, makeshift dining room, bar and library. To the left was the wall with designs carved into the wood.
Straight ahead was the grand staircase which lead to the second floor. There were only balcony’s on the second floor, so with the open concept of the house, I was able to see the lanterns hanging from the second floor ceiling.
I stood in front of the archway where the entrance to the lounge was. The fire place had a fire blazing and our mom sat on a chair nearby. I entered the lounge and tried my best to avoid the portrait that stared down at me from above the fire place.
“Hey mom.” I said, but mom said nothing and sat motionless.
“Mom?”
Still nothing.
“Maybe she needs a recharge.” Klaus said as he walked to the bar.
I grabbed the back of shirt before he could get any further. “I don’t think so.” I said as I dragged him out of the room.
“I was getting water!” Klaus shouted.
“Yeah I doubt that.” I said as I dragged him up the stairs.
We made it to the second floor and I wondered if anyone was here yet, or even bothered to show up.
“Do you think we’re the first ones here?” I asked as I let go of Klaus roughly.
“Maybe. Only one way to find out.” And Klaus walked down the hall and up the stairs to where our childhood rooms were. As I followed Klaus, down the hallway, I noticed the line of portraits that decorated the walls.
The first one had all of us in it, except for Vanya, posing with You-Know-Who. We were all so optimistic for the future and I could remember how giddy we felt when the portrait was being painted. We all felt like superhero’s back then and we were, but now as an adult I realized that we were only just kids.
The next portrait was years later, but instead Five was missing. You-know-who insisted that we got a new portrait painting to accommodate for the change in our team. I remember feeling furious for him trying to make us forget about Five, but back then we did not have a choice.
The next one, painted about six months after Five disappeared, was made after Ben died. He was another Umbrella Academy member that I was quite close with and after he died I was shattered. He was the best out of all of us. Ben died and it was a tragic accident and Ben died because we failed as a team.
The last portrait consisted of only Luther and You-Know-Who. I can’t believe after all these years he still decided to stay by his side.
“Y/n you coming?” Klaus asked from the bottom of the stairs that led to the third floor.
“Yeah I’m coming.” I gave one last look at the portraits hung on the wall before I followed Klaus up the stairs and into the hallway. I smiled surprisingly when I saw in the hallway was none other than my brother Diego.
“Diego!” I said as I ran to give him a hug. He returned the gesture and held onto me tightly.
“Y/nn.” He said into my hair.
“How have you been?” I asked as I pulled away.
“Good. Been helping people.”
“That’s good. I know how much you like to do that.” Diego gave Klaus a nod.
“Good to see you too brother.” Klaus said with a wink.
“How’s little Rosie.” Diego asked.
(A/n: Penelope’s middle name is Rose, so Diego uses Rosie as his own nickname for her)
I’m surprised he asked such a question. The last time I saw Diego was three years ago in the hospital after I gave birth to Penelope. That was the last time he ever seemed interested in her. Although I never saw Diego much, he was always there, mostly, for the big stuff.
“She’s doing great. Thanks for asking.”
“How about Noah? Is he confident for this upcoming football season?”
That question was not surprising. Noah and Diego have always gotten along despite their differences. Diego was always a fan of football and he was extremely excited when he found out that I was going to marry a professional football player. He used to come with me to watch Noah play, but over the years his presence became less and less until he completely stopped coming at all.
“He’s confident. He likes being on the Panthers instead of the Ravens. He feels like they are more like a team.”
“Well that’s good to hear. Maybe they’ll win the superbowl this year.”
“Yeah maybe.”
“Did you look into our rooms?” Klaus asked.
“Yeah I did.” Diego responded.
“Why?” I asked.
“For evidence related to dad’s murder.”
“You think evidence could be in our rooms?”
“I did and I checked and now I don’t.”
He really hasn’t changed all, but that’s one of the things I always liked about Diego. He stuck with his morals and what he believed in.
“Well I’m going to look into my room.” Klaus said and he walked to the door that lead to his room.
“Me too.” I said.
I started walking, but then turned back to Diego. “It is nice to see you again Diego.”
“You too sis.” He surprisingly said with a smile.
“Maybe we can meet up together some time.”
“Yeah maybe we can.”
Diego then walked away to go search for more evidence and I turned to walk to the door of my childhood room. My room was about halfway down the hallway and next to his. Memories of me sneaking into his room and him sneaking, or blinking, into my room began to flood my mind. But I quickly pushed that aside.
With a tiny exhale my hand grabbed the door knob and I slowly opened the door. My room was exactly the way I left it.
My favorite color back then was teal, and still is, so that was the main color theme. Three walls of the room were painted teal while the wall with the head of my bed and the ceiling were grey. I was into k-pop as a teenager, so posters upon posters of my favorite k-pop groups/artist were scattered across the walls. I walked to my bed and plopped on top of my comforter. It was just as soft as I remembered.
My head turned to my closet and I sat up and opened the door and was left with the sight of my old Umbrella Academy uniforms. I quickly shut the closet door. No one really stepped foot into this room after I left. Everything was literally exactly the same.
I noticed sitting on top of my dresser was my record player. I completely forgot it existed. It was actually a gift from You-Know-Who and it was one of the only items I have received from him that I cherished. I walked to my dresser and if I remembered correctly my vinyl case was on the floor. And sure enough there it was. I sat on the floor, unbuckled the case and opened it to see my vinyls from when I was a teenager. I was about to pull one out when Klaus popped his head through the door.
“Did you find anything interesting Y/nn?”
“My vinyls.” I plucked one from the case to show Klaus.
“I remember when you used to be obsessed with those. I brought you a few for a couple birthdays didn’t I?” Klaus plopped onto a nearby bean bag chair.
“Yeah you did.” I said with a fond smile. “Did you find anything interesting?”
“Nothing really.” Klaus shrugged. “I found this Rubix cube though. Thought I might attempt to solve it. Although out of all of us the only one who was able to solve it was…” Klaus trailed off. I think it was because he did not want to make me upset.
“You can say his name Klaus. Only Five was able to solve it.”
“Only Five was able to solve it.” He sent me a warm smile before fiddling with the rubix cube.
Then I got an idea. “Hey Klaus?”
“Yeah?” He looked up from the Rubix cube.
“How would you feel about going into You-Know-Who’s office? I mean if he’s really dead we wouldn’t even be able to step foot into that place. At least we will be able to find out if he’s truly dead.”
An amusing expression was displayed on Klaus’s face. “I would be delighted!”
He threw the Rubix cube behind him, grabbed me from my position on the floor and dragged me out of my room and into the hallway.
“That jerk never let us step foot into that room.” Klaus stated.
I hummed in response and was reminded of his rule about no children allowed in his office. Even his own children.

The eight of us waited outside of the big wooden door of dad’s office and mom knocked on the door before stepping in. She shut the door behind her and talked with dad as we waited outside.
We did this every night, but every single time it ended the exact same way. We would say good night and he would completely ignore us.
The door slid open and mom stood at the door entrance with an encouraging smile. When she stepped aside we all stood in the doorway proud and tall with smiles on our faces. Waiting for our father to acknowledge us. And just as predicted we were left disappointed as he continued to write whatever he was writing.
After a few moments of awkward silence mom said, “Okay! Time for bed now, kids. Come along now.” She began ushering us out of the doorway.
We all began walking away, but Allison remained still. Mom tried to usher her away as well.
“Come along now, Allison, your father is busy.”
“He’s always busy.” Allison said.
And she was right.

Klaus and I made it to dad’s office and like my room it was exactly the same. His desk was still in the center and behind the desk, a portrait of himself was right above the fireplace. There was a chair on the left and a table on the right.
“Now where is that money.” Klaus said.
I rolled my eyes. I would let him find some money, but I knew I had to keep my eyes on him for what he might buy with it. I walked over to the table on the right and began flipping through the pile of books he had on the table. Klaus began looking through his desk.
“Hi Y/n.”
I jumped and turned around to see my sister Allison. I haven’t seen her since Penelope was born like Diego.
“I’m sorry for scaring you.” She said.
“No it’s alright. It’s good to see you.” I brought her into a hug which thankfully she returned.
“It’s good to see you too. How’s Penelope?”
“She’s good. She just turned three. How’s Claire?”
“Great. Thank you for the gift for her birthday by the way.”
Suddenly a thump, which was Klaus, came from You-Know-Who’s desk.
“Is someone else here?” Allison asked.
“Klaus.”
Allison smiled and walked behind the desk where Klaus was. “Klaus? What are you doing in here?”
“Oh! Allison! Wow is that you?”
Klaus stood up from the ground. “Hey, come here.” Klaus extended his arms to bring Allison into a hug.
“Long time, too long.” He said as he pulled away. “Hey, I was hoping to see you, actually, because I wanted to get your autograph. Add it to my collection.”
I rolled my eyes. He was getting more creative with ways to get more money.
“Just out of rehab?” She asked. She probably saw his rehab bracelet.
“No, no. No, no. No, no. No I’m done with all that.” He said as he slid his coat sleeve down to hide the bracelet, “I’m living with Y/n now though.” He gestured to me and I smiled in return as I walked up to the desk. Allison turned around back at me, but said nothing.
“It was Y/n’s idea to come down here to prove to ourselves that the old man was really gone. And he is! He’s dead. Yeah!” Klaus began clapping his hands for extra effect, “You know how we know? Because if he were alive, not one of us would be allowed to step foot in this room. He was always in here, our whole childhood. Plotting his next torment, right?”
Klaus then sat in You-Know-Who’s chair and propped his feet onto the desk. “Remember how he used to look at us? That scowl?”
We all looked at the portrait above the fireplace.
“Thank Christ he’s not our real father, so we couldn’t inherit those cold dead eyes!”
Klaus used his hands to open up his eyelids and Allison and I couldn’t help, but laugh.
“Number Three. Number Eight.” Klaus said as he did a terrible imitation of our dad.
“Get out of his chair.”
I turned to see Luther looking cold at the doorway. He was covered completely from head to toe and the only body part that was visible was his head. He looked bigger too, as if he bulked up big time. Luther was always big, since super strength was his superpower, but I’ve never seen him this big. He was huge!
I wasn’t the only one who seemed to notice. “Oh, wow, Luther! Wow, you really, uh..You really filled out over the years, huh?” Klaus flexed his muscles after he stood from the chair.
“Klaus.” Luther said.
His tone pissed me off. It was the same condescending tone he used when we were kids. Since, he was number one he always considered himself in charge and it appeared that he still felt the same way after all these years. Especially when he told Klaus to get out of dad’s chair.
“Save the lecture. I was already leaving.” Klaus said. He muttered something else, but I couldn’t hear him.
“Come on Y/n. Let’s do some more exploring.”
“Drop it.” Luther said as he stopped Klaus from moving. Now he was pissing me off even more.
“Ex-squeeze me?” Klaus replied.
“Do it. Now.”
Klaus gave up as he roughly pulled away from Luther and pulled out everything that he stole from dad. “It’s just an advance on our inheritance! That’s all it is. No need to get your little panties in a bunch.”
He had a point there. Klaus then looped his arm with mine and we made our way out the doorway. I turned around and saw Allison and Luther staring at each other. They probably had a lot to talk about. Back when we were kids Allison and Luther had a thing, and everyone knew about it, but we never said anything. Even after all these years there seemed to be something going on between them.
“You know you should have taken something. You shouldn’t have to listen to Luther. We’re not kids anymore.” I said when we were out in the hall.
Klaus separated himself from me, so he could search behind his back. So he did take something. He pulled out what appeared to be a box of some sorts about the size of a book.
“I know I don’t have to listen to dear old Luther Miss Y/n.”
We both began laughing as we made our way downstairs to the lounge where we found Vanya and Diego
“Vanya.” I said.
Vanya turned and a grin appeared on her face. She brought me into a hug.
“It’s good to see you Y/n.”
“You too.” I said as I pulled away.
“Luther wants to hold a meeting here.” Diego said with a scowl.
“Of course he does. He thinks he still is number one.” I said as I found a seat on the couch. “I wonder why he can’t just move on.”
One thing me and Diego agreed on was our dislike for Luther. Diego likes to use the word hate, but I always found the word to be too harsh and especially when talking about a person who happens to be my brother.
“Do you know what the meeting is about?” Klaus asked.
Vanya and Diego shook their heads.
“Well this should be fun.” I said sarcastically, “and I need a drink.” I rose from the couch to the bar to pour myself a drink.
Shortly after, Allison and Luther came back from their conversation in You-Know-Who’s office and we were all gathered to hear what Luther had to say.
Vanya and I sat on the couch, Allison and Diego sat to our right near the fireplace, and Luther sat on the couch across from us. Klaus went to the bar to get a drink, but before he left I warned him that he can only have one. I figure I’ll cut him some slack since our father was dead.
It was awkward. No one said anything as the fire crackled. I quietly sipped on my drink until Luther spoke up.
“I guess we should get this started.” He said we he rose from his spot on the couch.
“So, I figured we could have a sort of memorial service in the courtyard at sundown. Say a few words, just at Dad’s favorite spot.”
I did not want to do that, but I silently applauded Luther for his effort.
“Dad had a favorite spot?” Allison asked. I didn’t know that either.
“You know, under the oak.” Luther answered as if it was obvious. “We used to sit out there all the time. None of you ever did that?”
“Nope.” I answered with the pop of the p.
“Will there be refreshments?” Klaus asked as he joined us. “Tea? Scones? Cucumber sandwiches are always a winner.”
I couldn’t help, but smile at Klaus as he tried to bring up the mood with a joke. But Luther wasn’t having any of it.
“What? No. And put that out. Dad didn’t allow smoking in here.” You’ve got to be kidding me.
“The man is dead Luther. Klaus can smoke if he wants to.” I said.
“Is that my skirt?” Allison asked as she motioned to Klaus.
While we waited for the meeting to start, Klaus left to go to our rooms, before Allison and Luther arrived, and came back with no shirt and Allison’s skirt on.
“What? Oh yeah. I found it in your room. It’s a little dated, I know, but it’s very breathey on the bits.”
“Listen up.” Luther said, “Still some important things that we need to discuss alright?”
Klaus took a seat beside me.
“Like what?” Diego asked.
“Like the way dad died.”
“And here we go.”
“I don’t understand. I thought they said it was a heart attack.” Vanya said and I couldn’t help, but agree.
“Yeah according to the coroner.” Luther added.
“Well wouldn’t they know?”
“Theoretically.”
“Theoretically?” Allison asked.
Did Luther think he was smarter than the coroner?
“I’m just saying, at the very least, something happened. The last time that I talked to dad, he sounded strange.”
“Oh, quelle surprise!” Klaus said as he gurgled the alcohol in his mouth.
“Strange?” I asked.
“Strange how?” Allison asked.
“He sounded on edge. Told me I should be careful who you trust.”
“Luther, he was a paranoid, bitter old man who was starting to loose what was left of his marbles.” Diego said as he rose from his chair and walked to Luther.
“No he must have known something was going to happen.” Luther turned to Klaus, “Look I know you don’t like to do it, but I need you to talk to dad.”
“I can’t just call Dad in the afterlife and be like, “Dad, could you just…stop playing tennis with Hitler for a moment and take a quick call?”
I rolled my eyes. I knew Klaus wasn’t making an excuse. He couldn’t call dad because he was high. How he was high I did not know, but then I remembered when he went upstairs to our rooms alone. He probably had an old stash hidden in his room. Damn I should have went up with him!
“Since when? That’s your thing.” Luther said annoyed.
“I’m not in the right…frame of mind.”
“You’re high?” I asked.
“Yeah! Yeah! I mean how are you not, listening to this nonsense?”
“Well sober up this is important.”
Now I was getting angry at Luther again. I wanted Klaus to sober up for his health, but Luther wanted him to sober up so he can talk to dad. I wanted to say something, but I sipped my drink instead before I could say anything I would regret.
“Then there’s the issue of the missing monocle.” Luther continued.
“Who gives a shit about a stupid monocle?” Diego asked.
“Exactly.” I added. Where was Luther going with this?
“So whoever took it, I think it was personal. Someone close to him. Someone with a grudge.”
“Where are you going with this?” Klaus asked.
I had a suspicion about what Luther was implying and it appeared I wasn’t the only one thinking what I was thinking.
“Oh isn’t it obvious, Klaus?” Diego began, “He thinks one of us killed dad.”
Me and Diego were on the same page. Luther stood silent. Great he thinks his siblings are murderers! One more reason to hate him.
“You do?” Klaus asked.
“How could you think that?” Vanya asked.
“Great job, Luther. Way to lead.” Diego said sarcastically as he left the room.
“That’s not what I’m saying.” But I didn’t believe a word coming out of Luther’s mouth.
“You’re crazy, man. You’re crazy.” Klaus said as he left as well.
“I’m not finished.” Luther argued.
“Sorry, I’m just gonna go murder mom. Be right back.” Klaus replied.
Vanya and I stood up and began to exit the room.
“That’s not what I was saying.” Luther said.
Nothing he can say can make us change our minds. He did really think one of us killed dad and now he has to deal with the consequences.

“In 5..4…3…2…1. This is Jim Hellerman, reporting live for Channel 2 News outside of the Capital West Bank at Main and Sixth. A group of heavily armed men stormed the bank not three hours ago and took an unknown number of hostages.”
[Inside the bank]
I stood behind a pillar in the bank and I peered over to see the hostages being gagged and tied up by a group of men.
Allison slowly walked behind up to one of the men who was talking on a pay phone. The plan was to wait for Allison to make the first move before attempting anything.
“Hey get back with the others.” The man said when he noticed Allison.
“I heard a rumor.” She said.
“What? What did you say?” The man seeemed agrivated.
“I heard a rumor that you shot your friend in the foot.” Allison “whispered” in the man’s ear.
The man was instantly put into a trance. He raised the gun that was in his hand and shot his friend in the foot and again for good measure. He looked puzzled at what he just done after the spell wore off.
Then Luther broke through the ceiling and pinned a man to the ground. Luther hit the man’s head against the marble counter before throwing him out the glass window.
Diego came running in and said, “Guns are for sissies. Real men throw knives.”
He threw two knives and they sailed perfectly in the air, before making a sharp turn and pinning a man against the wall instantly killing him.
I popped out of my hiding spot and a man noticed my presence. Smirking, I broke into a run , right up to him, and did a round off into several back handsprings and finishing off with a layout. My powers helped me remain unharmed from the bullets firing from his gun and the bullets bounced off my skin as if they were flies. I landed with impeccable form, right on top of the mans neck, making him drop dead to the floor instantly.
I turned and noticed that the first guy, who shot his friend in the foot, was now standing on top of the counter with his gun pointed at Allison, Diego, Klaus and I. Since Klaus’s powers couldn’t help us here, he was here just in case we needed an extra hand and Luther was currently making sure the hostages were safe. It looked liked the first guy was shaking. Coward.
“Get back you freaks.” The guy said.
“Hey be careful up there buddy.” Diego taunted. Me and him shared a laugh.
“Yeah wouldn’t want you to get hurt.” Allison added.
“Or what?” The guy said. His tone seemed tough, but I could tell through his eyes that he was still scared.
Then Five suddenly blinked next to him. He was sitting criss cross applesauce on top of the marble counter.
“Or what?” Five asked.
The guy began firing his gun, but Five blinked before any of the bullets could hit him. He appeared on the other side of the guy with his arms crossed. The guy went to fire his gun at five again, but soon realized that he couldn’t when he had a stapler instead of a gun in his hand. Nice job Five.
“Ooh! That’s one badass stapler!” Five joked and I couldn’t help, but giggle out loud.
Five pushed the stapler against the guy’s head instantly killing him. Ben’s turn was up. We all gathered around to wait for him to do his thing.
“Do we really have to do this?” Ben asked.
I felt bad for Ben. He did not enjoy using his power and I couldn’t blame him.
“Come on Ben. There’s more guys in the vault.” Luther said. I rolled my eyes. Although I wanted to disagree with Luther, he was right. Ben had to complete his task and go into the vault.
“I didn’t sign up for this.” Ben muttered before he walked into the vault. Allison and I quickly guided all of the hostages to the entrance of the bank and we set them free. Once all the hostages have exited, I closed the doors shut and Allison and I walked back to wait for Ben.
We heard a beast screeching before we saw shadows of tentacles, blood and bodies against the foggy windows of the valut. The screams died down and the door slowly opened to reveal Ben comepletely covered in blood.
“Can we go home now?” He asked.
“Not yet.” I said.
All of us went towards the entrance of the bank and opened the doors to walk down a few steps. We all stood in a line, Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five, Ben and me, and we posed with proud smiles on our faces, well except for maybe Ben.
“Psst.”
I looked behind Ben and saw Five looking at me with a smile. I returned the smile and looked forward.
The police held guns at us, but we remained tall and strong. There were helicopters in the sky and the sound of a bunch of police cars. We heard some questions and commands being thrown at us such as.
“Lower your weapon!”
“How did you get into the bank?”
“What happened inside?”
But we said nothing and waited until our dad came before answering anything.
A few minutes later our dad arrived and gave us some coats for the cold weather and wiped down Ben’s bloody face, so he could look presentable. He wanted all of us to look presentable before introducing us to the world. He stood in front of us, a few steps down, and began his prepared speech.
“Our world is changing. Has changed. There are some among us gifted with abilities far beyond the ordinary. I have adopted seven such children. I give you the inaugural class of the Umbrella Academy!”
He stepped to the side so the media could get a good look at us properly. We stood with big smiles on our faces as the cameras flashed away. Reporters immediately started asking questions.
“Mr Hargreeves!”
“Mr. Hargreeves! Channel 9 News. What happened to their parents?”
“They were suitably compensated.” Dad responded from his spot next to me.
“Are you concerned about the welfare of the children?”
“Of course. As I am for the fate of the world.”

I laid on my back, on my bed, and stared up at the ceiling. Green glow in the dark sticker stars were stuck onto the ceiling. I remember I had mom help me put them up when I was seven. I was so proud when I managed to get the shape of Ursa Major up there. I smiled at the memory.
I wonder if mom was recharged since she wasn’t responding to me earlier. Or at least pogo maybe fixed whatever was wrong with her. I would have to make sure to say hi to pogo before I leave.
Suddenly I heard the beginning beats of “I think We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany.
At first I ignored the catchy tune, but eventually I began to tap along to the beat with my fingers against my stomach. It has to be Luther or Vanya playing the song since they were the only other people who had a record player in their room.
I slowly sat up and began bopping my head to the music. Eventually I grabbed an old hat from my closet and placed it on my head. And then I just began to dance like nobody was watching. Clearly no one was watching since I was alone in my room with the door closed.
I jumped onto my bed and began jumping up and down and moving my limbs wherever. I wonder if anyone else was dancing along to the music like me. After a few more moments of improv dancing I stopped after I decided to try something I haven’t done in years.
I took a deep breath before I flipped into the air from my bed and landed perfectly on my feet. I still got it I thought, but I knew the real reason why I landed in the right stance unharmed. My power prevented me from landing dangerously on my neck and dyeing from a slow and painful death.
Suddenly out of nowhere, the room got dark and a blue light with thunder and lightning was coming from outside my bedroom window. I walked closer to the window and noticed it was coming from the backyard. I quickly threw my hat across the room, grabbed my coat, and walked out to see what was going on. I made it to the kitchen where I saw Klaus pulling a fire extinguisher from the wall.
“Klaus! What are you doing?”
“Trying to get this thing off the wall, so I can throw it at that thing outside.”
I walked up to Klaus and I helped him pry off the fire extinguisher from the wall. Even from inside we could feel the breeze and power from whatever was out there. Finally after a couple more attempts, the fire extinguisher was pulled free and Klaus ran outside, so I followed him.
“Out of the way!”
He pushed through Luther and Diego to get to the front.
“What are you—“
Klaus began blowing the white fluffy stuff that came out of the fire extinguisher at the blue mystery blob. It did nothing. When that didn’t work he decided to throw the fire extinguisher into whatever the blue thing was and the fire extinguisher disappeared.
I looked up and I finally got a good look at the mystery storm. It almost looked like a portal and it was electric blue. I couldn’t tell what exactly was at the other end, but it looked like a fence of some sort.
“What is that gonna do?” I asked.
“I don‘t know.” Klaus said, “Do you have a better idea?”
Suddenly something started coming through the portal.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa.”
We all began to back up.
“Everybody get behind me.” Luther said.
“Yeah, get behind us.” Diego said.
I rolled my eyes. Even when there was a real life threat Diego and Luther were still trying to fight for the “Number one” spot.
“I vote for running, c’mon!” Klaus shouted.
“No!” I responded and I pulled Klaus towards me before he got the chance do escape.
Then something started to come through and it vaguely looked like a person. Hopefully they weren’t a threat. The person came through and they dropped to the ground with a thud.
The portal disappeared and the sky cleared up as if nothing happened. We all walked closer to the person to see who it was. He slowly stood up from the ground and I could not believe my eyes.
It was him standing in an oversized suit and he looked just the way he did the day he disappeared. He still looked seventeen! But how? Why?
“Does anyone else see little Number Five, or is it just me?” Klaus asked.
NUMBER FIVE
(Number Five)
Five looked down at himself.
“Shit.” He said.
My breath hitched. I haven’t heard his voice in twelve years.
