Let’s Fix It: BtVS S7

So, let’s preface this by saying, I’m interested in any kinds of things that y’all would have done differently in Buffy (or really any of the fandoms you see me reblogging in, tbh). From major changes to like tiny things like specific words that got used that bothered you. Please share those thoughts with me too!

For this specific post right now (the thought that’s literally) keeping me awake right now for no real reason), I’m really thinking about season 7 which is, in my opinion, the weakest season. And I think that’s largely because of the villain. Like, they can’t eradicate the concept of evil. And what exactly is it that the concept of evil wants? I dunno, it just didn’t work for me. I did like the sort of deep-dive into Slayer lore and Potential Slayers (though we didn’t need to actually meet so many....)

I’ve got two really rough ideas for who the Big Bad could have been instead, which would have still led to the deep-dive into Slayer lore and stuff, but like....been a villain and not just an idea. The first is a Slaypire (or Slayer-turned-vampire) which I think also does nice full-circle thing to 1x10 “Nightmares”, when becoming a vampire was Buffy’s nightmare. My second thought was maybe a power-hungry Potential who is actively trying to eliminate the competition to ensure she becomes the next Slayer.

What would any of you have done differently? What would you have liked to have seen?

Alternatives to white guest stars getting treated with kid gloves and Shinwell being fridged for fake ass Joanlock drama:

The beginning of season 2 opens with Sherlock learning of Moriarty’s death in prison. In episode 2x12 they find her daughter and make sure she goes into a loving home after her first adoptive parents are murdered. Mycroft visits for a time but both Joan and Sherlock sense his insincerity from the beginning and Joan calls out his bullshit about saving Sherlock from prison. She also slaps him, both for wanting her to feel sorry for him and expecting his sacrifice for Sherlock to make her forgive him for her kidnapping. Mycroft still fakes his death and leaves their lives forever. Sherlock and Joan have a healthy discussion eventually about why Joan needs to move out. They go solve a case in London together. Joan returns to New York, Sherlock chooses to stay.

Sherlock and Joan exchange letters frequently during the 8 months he’s in London. He tells her about Kitty.

Kitty returns after Gruner commits suicide in prison, leaving no proof or testament behind that it was she who disfigured him. She finds a girlfriend in New York, and they move into a place not too far from the brownstone, and often join Joan and Sherlock on cases. Kitty and her gf have a child through a sperm donor. Kitty is the pregnant one. Joan and Sherlock still become godparents. Joan loves babysitting. Sherlock takes longer to get used to it.

Joan dates Andrew for a while, and discovers she’s aromantic. After discussing this with Andrew, they stop dating but remain good friends and have a sort of open relationship. Sherlock sometimes joins.

When Sherlock relapses and beats Oscar, he accepts a prison sentence for his crimes rather than be blackmailed by his father. Joan and he exchange letters during that time. Andrew and Joan live in the brownstone together for some time, though Andrew goes on frequent business trips. Joan learns more about beekeeping. She, Alfredo, and Kitty visit Sherlock in prison at least once a month each. Joan sometimes visits more often when she’s on a case she knows he’ll like.

After Sherlock gets out of prison, Morland tries to help them on a case. Days later he’s murdered. Moriarty’s successor is behind the crime, and Joan and Sherlock set out to dismantle their empire for good. Sherlock doesn’t so much mourn his father as much as he regrets the man never understood why he always held May’s death against him. Joan and him have a much deeper conversation about May’s addiction after Morland’s death. Joan gets the ring.

Sherlock and Fiona date for a few months but decide they’d rather be friends. Sherlock loves sharing his work with her, but understands he can’t share everything he wants because there are some things she’s not comfortable with. She helps him begin to like cats again. Fiona frequently visits the brownstone, and Joan always makes her favorite tea, and they talk about the bees, poetry, technology and computers, different developments in their respective fields.

Shinwell survives. Joan avenges him and makes the first inroads in dismantling SBK while Shinwell is hospitalized. Sherlock comes to understand Shinwell wanted to make amends for his friend’s murder just as much as he wanted vengeance. He tells Sherlock he would’ve never let any harm come to Joan - he would’ve rather died. Shinwell confesses to the murder and goes back to prison. Joan and him exchange letters for the rest of their lives. The three of them collaborate on cases, rather covertly sometimes, as Shinwell forms different alliances in the prison system.

To add to the discussion of Buffy cheating death, I agree that it probably did not happen much with slayers, because, as you said, most of them lived solitary lives, and Buffy's friends were instrumental in helping keep her alive. I also think that maybe Buffy's first resurrection didn't trigger the events that her second resurrection did was because Xander used "natural" means to revive her, while Willow used magic. Also, if you have more info on Slaypires, I'd be interested. I don't know if Buffy being one in Nightmares counts, since that was a nightmare, and I've always wondered what would happen if a slayer became a vamp. Would she be different than a regular vamp?

The thing that's "unnatural" is that there were two Slayers active at one time -- so it depends on if we're talking about how she was resurrected or the result of the resurrection.

I do think, not to veer totally off topic, it would have been interesting if the Slayer line had branched and we'd gotten a third Slayer called after Buffy's second death, instead of the idea that both Buffy and Faith would need to die to get a new one (per Buffy's random theory she suggested in Season 7 based on nothing since Faith was called when Kendra died.....smh....)

Slaypires started in non-canon comic books/novels, I think, but they were a big part of the post-TV show comic books. The Buffy wiki has a page on them, but the gist is that they were significantly stronger than vampires or Slayers because they have the combined powers (but also all the same weaknesses of regular vampires.)

Let's Fix It: Teen Wolf Revolving Cast

Been a while since I started one of my fix-it discussions so....let's do one. I think we can all agree there's plenty that can be improved upon in Teen Wolf (and I'm open to hearing any and all ideas about that!) but I'm really most interested in talking about all of the characters who left.

Of the characters who left or disappeared, who would you have kept? How would that have impacted the rest of the series? What would you have had happen to those characters that we didn't get to see?

Are there any "replacement characters" you would never have brought onto the show at all?

i like that idea, though buffy’s s1 resurrection maybe should be more the last in a series of things that triggers the first’s escape — i know she’s the protagonist, but there’s statistically no way she’s the first slayer in all history in all the world to cheat death, right? even if she’s the first to do so under the council’s watch...

but! yes, great, that sets a clear time frame for when the first’s been active in the background of things and gives an in-verse explanation for why things go from campy s1 to depressing s6!

Does becoming a Slaypire count as cheating death, because then we've certainly established that that happened. Seriously though, it's possible that other Slayers have cheated death but I think it's statistically less likely than you'd assume. Because

Slayers were usually just considered replaceable tools by the Council.

Most Slayers were trained to be isolated from friends, so no one to revive them.

Most monsters/demons are probably going to go for something more permanent than drowning.

Things like CPRs and defibrilators are relatively new in human history.

But I think it may not impact what we're talking about too much either way, she's certainly the only Slayer to have cheated death twice....so maybe the First's prison was weakened by her first death, and it manipulated events (including Willow's magic addiction, which is a big factor in why she resurrected Buffy) so that she would cheat death a second time and that's what completely broke open the prison? If Buffy is not the first Slayer to die and come back, maybe the First has tried to get them to die and come back a second time so that they could break the seal. And each time, the First has failed, and with just one Slayer the seal strengthened again?

And on that note, perhaps when Willow rewrites the rules for Slayers (I'm assuming we're keeping that part) maybe she also makes it so the prison the First is kept in is stronger the more Slayers that there are instead of the other way around?
