Fixing a Roland Juno Keyboard after liquid spill

It turns out that pouring half a bottle of red wine into a brand new keyboard really messes it up, voids the warranty, and generally causes tears all round.

The results in this case were many of the keys played extremely loudly, even from giving them just a gentle touch. It seemed that the velocity sensing was messed up by the liquid, even after days of drying it out. Presumably the wine residue was sticking something down in there.

Anyway, before sending it off to get it fixed and parting with a bunch of cash, I decided to try and fix it myself (with the help of Ben, who helpfully ruined it in the first place). And it worked!

I’ve created a walk through for anyone else lucky enough to need to do this. This is for a Roland Juno keyboard, but I can’t see how it would be that much of a different process for any other make or model.

Tools and equipment

Iso-propanol for cleaning. I bought some from Maplins, but Amazon has some pretty good deals. I suggest not using contact cleaner as it could damage the silicone / rubber parts. 

Cotton buds (Q-tips)

Screw drivers

Masking tape & sharpie (to label the keys)

Jar for holding screws

Beer (it took nearly 2 hours) 

Step 1 - Number the keys

I’m no musical expert (it’s my girlfriends keyboard) but those keys don’t look fun to put back together in the right order, so stick some masking tape on them and number them to keep track when they all fall out all over the place.  

Step 2 - Remove the back

There are lots of screws, so keep them in a jar. There are only two types and it’s pretty obvious where they go so don’t worry too much about remembering it all. 

Watch out for any cables attaching the battery holder on the back, you can disconnect them from the main assembly using the small connector.

You’ll have something that looks like this:

Step 3 - Remove the key assembly 

The keys are all in a self contained assembly, which you can remove all in one section by undoing two screws that hold it in. It looks something like this once you've removed it:

Now you have to remove all the keys. See all those springs? You need to unclip them all to get the keys off, so make sure they don’t fly all over the place when you’re doing it. The black keys have shorter springs than the white keys which is worth remembering when you reassemble.

Step 4 - Clean the keys and contacts

Once you’ve got the keys off (hopefully you remembered to number them) clean them all with the isopropanol and cotton buds. The chemical doesn't tarnish the plastic, but I kept it off the face of the keys just in case. It’s important to get any residue off the bottoms of the keys where they touch the rubber contacts to stop them sticking down and messing up the velocity.

Under the keys you can see the contacts, give these a good clean with iso-propanol. Carefully remove the rubber contact covers if you think any liquid got underneath, and give the contacts a quick clean. Don’t rub them too hard or the black covering will get worn off which is probably a bad thing.

Also, be careful not to wipe off the white lubricant paste that helps the keys move more smoothly when pressed.

Step 4 - Reassembly

Now start reassembling. It's the same as dismantling just in reverse.

Remember, the springs for the black keys are shorter, make sure you don’t use the wrong ones or some of the keys will be either really hard to press and others totally flaccid. 

Step 5 - Testing

It worked for us. If it didn’t work for you, then you’re screwed.
