FIXED MAGAZINE #15
Fixed Magazine #15 is in the house. Get it here: http://beta.pici-bici.com/product/fixed-magazine-15 Introduction by Andy Ellis: "AT YOUR OWN RISK" Fixed gear is a form of exploration. Exploration is deeply entwined with the notion of taking risks, and a risk is a journey into the unknown. Getting acclimatised to the risk of riding a fixed gear bike is a hard thing to do. Teaching others to take the step towards the unknown is even harder to achieve. When I decided to take the risk and ride fixed, there was no one I knew that rode fixed, personally. I saw others on videos doing what I aspired to do and I made the choice myself to make the jump. Having others around you to help you make the choice has its pros and cons. Choices are easier to make when you are amongst like-minded individuals, as you know how that choice will work out as you have already seen it play out. Once you make the choice sans like-minded individuals, you become the one that empowers your self. These two path choices are the paths of leaders and followers. I'm not saying I am a leader of others, I'm saying I am a leader of myself. If you are the person that makes your own decisions, than you are probably a person that likes to take risks. By practising the activity of riding Fixed as part of your everyday life, you learn to become used to risks and also able to manage your fear under intense situations. The impossible becomes possible. The act appears more dangerous to the average person who has not experienced riding a fixed gear bike. Riskier activities have had more planning put into them than people imagine. Preparation is the key to success and although you might not thing you have planned your whole journey out beforehand... You are wrong. In your head you are prepared for every scenario that could possibly unfold in front of you, if you weren't, than you would not get very far through your journey. The very idea of risk taking in the face of adversity is what excites me. I can no longer become the first explorer to the top of Mt. Everest / the bottom of the Mariana Trench, or the first man on the moon. These opportunities are thinning out rapidly. To me, the only thing left to explore is how far you can push yourself in the face of adversity. Are you willing to risk everything for something you want to achieve? I get criticism all the time regarding my thoughts on fixed gear. Critics say I think too much about the ethos of riding fixed, they say to me "it's just a bike", then accuse me of being elitist. Cycling is dangerous and riding fixed is seen as being more dangerous to others. As the risk of danger becomes greater, the number of people willing to go forward shrinks. The only ones left are the real risk takers, Fixed was never a gateway drug to cycling, Fixed is not for everyone. Riding Fixed is for the risk takers that say "fuck you" to cycling. Nothing more, nothing less.
Fixed Magazine #15 out Late June.
