The clans don't necessarily have "leaders", this is literally all just fun and games. I don't have an in lore explanation for anything that happens, I just wanted to see them as cats.

Every teen character is still an apprentice in this, with all of the later teens (like the FD1 cast) being close to becoming warriors, while the younger teens (like Tim and the kid from FD2) are newer apps. The only ones who breaks this rule are Ian and Erin so I can keep Ian's "last name is the same as his town" bit.

Okay confession

I really hated Carter at first, up until the train scene because

He was kind of just a dick to everyone and it seemed like that was his character. He was just mean and angry and violent to everyone because that's just how he is.

But the train scene shows that he's afraid. He's afraid of dying, he's afraid of losing control, he's afraid of Alex. He masks his fear with violence and anger. That's why he's so much more aggressive with Alex after Flight 180.
