Every time I mention that Wylan can speak Fjerdan on here someone will inevitable say something about how he doesn’t really know it/isn’t very good at it and I have to fight the urge to start an argument with them because the whole point is that everyone (though most specifically Jesper) was unknowingly practicing the same cruelty to Wylan that his father does by devaluing his intelligence and potentially implying that he was stupid for only knowing the spoken form of the language rather than the written and the immediate assumption is always that Wylan can’t do something properly because of factors that are purely beyond his control and just because the crowd don’t know what they re doing doesn’t mean they didn’t do it, it’s the change they make when they do know that makes the difference and Wylan’s ability to fucking sing in Fjerdan saves Jesper’s life and I am a Wylan-and-Matthias-are-best-friends agenda spouter so I love the idea that they would speak to each other in Fjerdan os I’m gonna keep going on about it but anyway I don’t like arguments and I hope this doesn’t start any but I wanted to say that because so much of Wylan and Jesper’s early interactions are unintentionally damaging to Wylan with the constant rhetorics of “useless” and “idiot” and the immediate switch up in Jesper’s language later on is so fucking important anyway I need to go to sleep this may not even make sense I’m too tired I might have said this in too much absolutes bc like obviously there’s always layers to it and different interpretations and all but u just feel like this is an important layer and no one talks about it yk
