Norsery Rhymes from A to Z Fjolsvidr, The Very Wise
Well here we are another Thor’s Day and another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic) mythological characters. This week it’s Fjolsvidr / Fjolsvid / Fjölsviðr/ Fjölsvið/ / the Dwarven (Dverg / Dvergr / Dwarf). One of the Dvergr mentioned in the Pulur.
His name can be translated as ‘’the One who Knows Much” or “Keeper of Many Secrets”. From the Old Norse Fjol meaning ‘many’ or ‘much’ Or from the Old Norse Fela meanng ‘ hidden’ or ‘secret’. Also used by Odin as one of his names.
It’s thought that this association with wisdom may be tied to the wisdom of death as many Dverg are tied to underworld imagery.
