Norsery Rhymes, Northern Mythology from A to Z Fjolsvidr - The Much Wise and Strong - V2

Well here we are another Thor’s Day and another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic, sometimes Celtic) mythological characters. This week it’s another version of Fjolsvidr / Fjölsviðr / Fjǫlsviðr. A Jotnar (Jötunn / Jotun / Jotunn / Jetten / Eoten / Giant. Mentioned in the Fjölsvinnsmál of the Svipdagsmál.

His name can be translated as ‘’the much wise”. From the Old Norse ‘Fjol’ for 'many’ or 'much’, and 'Svinnr’ for 'wise’/ 'clever’ or 'svinda’ for 'strong’.

The giant gatekeeper of the gates of the Menglods Hall who offeres common threatens Svipdagr when he attempts to enter the hall to determin if Menglod is present. Then asks a number of questions about his travels and adventures. Fjolsvidr then reveals that the gates will only open for one person. Who just happens to be Svipdagr.

Since I’m try to do as many versions as possible, and I’ve been reading that there’s been some academic discussions about the gender of Fjolsvidr over the years. It’s a mans name generally but a guard for a maid being a woman seemed in tune with a lot of other maiden stories so I thought I’d have fun and do a female version last week. And just to cover my bases, I made a male version this week.

This week it’s Fjolsvidr / Fjolsvid / Fjölsviðr/ Fjölsvið / Fjolsvin . A name for Odin mentioned in the Svipdagsmál, Gylfaginning, Grímnismál, and Óðins nǫfn. His name can be translated as ‘’the One who Knows Much” or “Keeper of Many Secrets”. From the Old Norse Fjol meaning ‘many’ or ‘much’ Or from the Old Norse Fela meanng ‘ hidden’ or ‘secret’. And old Norse Nir indicating it as a masculine title, or ‘man of’.

Used by Odin as one of his thousand hailed names names / Titles. This one to indicate his wisdom.

Odin uses this name when acting / disguised as the giant gatekeeper of the gates of the castle Asgard along with his wolfhounds Geri and Freki castle in the shade of Mimir’s tree. Where he asks the hero Svipdag, who is in disguise and calls himself Vindkald, a number of questions about his travels and adventures. Questions about his quest to find the goddess / giantess Menglod / Menglad, who is to be found in the castle. Fjolsvidr says he built the castle himself out of an giant, just as Odin did with the world. Though this time he calls the giant Leir Brimnir.

Odin asks a series of 18 riddles and questions, most about his journey, and the castle, and who is meant to be there, all answered correctly by Svipdagr as he realizes the questions give away future answers. Odin deduces that this must be the one who is destined to marry Menglod from his journeys and as the likely new owner of the fabled Sword of Freyr, that was capable of killing any giant. So says the final key is that only the man named Svipdagr can enter this castle, who then reveals his name and is united with Menglod.

His name can be translated as ‘’the One who Knows Much” or “Keeper of Many Secrets”. From the Old Norse Fjol meaning ‘many’ or ‘much’ Or from the Old Norse Fela meanng ‘ hidden’ or ‘secret’. Also used by Odin as one of his names.

It’s thought that this association with wisdom may be tied to the wisdom of death as many Dverg are tied to underworld imagery.
