The proper way to dispose of an American flag

The United States Flag Code is a Federal Law, but it's not enforced.

VIENNA, Va. - Memorial Day has come and gone and now we look to the next big patriotic day, but first many of us need to get fresh American flags. Before you do that there's a certain way to dispose of your old, tattered flags.

According to the United States Flag Code when a flag is so damaged that it no longer can serve as a symbol of the country it should be retired in a dignified way. Instead of just throwing it away, Fairfax County has set up flag deposit boxes all over, at the Government Center as well as County Police stations. After all the flags are collected The American Legion takes all of them and has a ceremony properly retiring them on Flag Day. Legion officials say flags mean more than what meets the eye.

"That's a soldier, that represents a soldier as far as I am concerned. That represents a hero that didn't make it back and unfortunately can't be with their loved ones. It is kind of like a gift to heaven that we have not forgotten them," said Joe Payne, Legionnaire at American Legion Post 180.

Although the code is a Federal Law, it is not enforced.

Does the flag have to be destroyed if it touches the ground?

Care should be exercised in the handling of the flag, to protect it from becoming soiled or damaged. However, you are not required to destroy the flag if it touches the ground. As long as the flag remains suitable for display, even if washing or dry-cleaning (which is an acceptable practice) is required, the flag may continue to be displayed. So, don't worry if it accidentally touches the ground, just be careful.

Putting Old Glory To Rest: Thousand Oaks and Moorpark Police Departments to Accept Old American Flags

The Thousand Oaks and Moorpark Police Departments are pleased to announce that they will be accepting used, worn and frayed American Flags for collection. The flags will be respectfully transported to The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #11395, located at 158 Conejo School Road in Thousand Oaks, for proper destruction in accordance with United States Flag Code and VFW Policies.

The flags will be accepted at the following locations during business hours:

Thousand Oaks Police Station, 2101 E Olsen Rd., Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Resource Center, 2100 E Thousand Oaks Blvd. Thousand Oaks Oaks Mall Resource Center, 350 W Hillcrest Dr. Thousand Oaks The Moorpark Police Station, 610 Spring St. Moorpark.

The Thousand Oaks VFW estimates they respectfully destroy 600 flags every year in a ceremony at City Hall.

The disposal boxes were hand-crafted by the Conejo Valley Woodworkers Association, who donated their time and expertise to this project.
