On Saturday, 02/06/16, at about 10:30 p.m., the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office responded to a mutual aid request from the Santa Paula Police Department regarding overdue hikers. Patrick Gardner and his five year old son, were hiking in the area of Sycamore Canyon Campground near the Pacific Coast Highway. Gardner and his son became disoriented to their location and were forced to stay overnight in the area of Pacific View Drive and Deer Creek Road which is located outside of the California State Park.
Patrol resources located Gardner’s vehicle in the day use area of the parking lot at the Sycamore Canyon Campground. The Sheriff’s Aviation unit conducted a search of the area using night vision googles and Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) with negative results. This prompted the activation of the East Valley Search and Rescue Team to conduct a ground search of the area. Additional resources from the Fillmore Search and Rescue Team, K-9 Search and Rescue, Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, and the Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services were also activated to aid in locating Gardner and his son.
On Sunday 02/07/16, at about 9:00 a.m., Gardner and his son walked out of the search area with minor cuts and scratches but were in good health and spirits. After speaking to Gardner it was determined he and his son became lost sometime after sunset. Gardner and his son found refuge in an unoccupied dwelling east of the Sycamore Canyon Campground. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind anyone enjoying the back county to be prepared for even the easiest of hikes. The “Ten Essentials” to take when hiking are Map, GPS, Sunglasses and Sunscreen, Extra Clothing, Flashlight, First-Aid Supplies, Fire Starter, Matches, Knife, and Extra Food and Water. Also file a hiking plan with someone who will be able to contact rescue resources in the event you do not return at your planned time. A hiking plan can be found at www.VCSAR3.org

One Acre of Land Creates $19 Million in Revenues—Growing Marijuana
By Stephen Frank
A good farmer might find a crop where they can make a $20-50,000 profit on an acre of land. There are no crops or products, possibly including oil, where a one acre plot of farm land can bring in $19 million in one year—almost all of it profit! No fruit, vegetable, cotton, nuts or other products can provide such a massive profit, except for one—marijuana.
“A few years ago Los Banos Farmer Cannon Michael discovered a one-acre illegal marijuana grow on his land.
“So I think there’s absolutely a role for big industrial commercial production and I think there will always be a role for craft producers if we take the time to get it right.”
“They had made reservoirs and they were pumping water,” Michael says. “They had buried generators. They had this whole encampment and we knew nothing about it.”
He says the forbidden plantation was worth around $19 million dollars. That’s more than his 11,000 acres of tomatoes, cotton and other crops bring in in one year. That got him thinking.
“So if that’s a market that’s viable then we would definitely look at it,” Michael says. “I don’t know if I thought if I put in a 200 acre planting of marijuana would the market sustain that?”
Heck, no need to spend time and effort growing 200 acres of marijuana—just do ten acres a yea, your profits, each year would be north of $150 million. That is more than enough for several generations of a family without doing more work! That is what is at stake in the 2016 election. Legal marijuana and farmers could become as rich as a tech firm founder! The good news for the potheads is that as more marijuana comes on the market, the cheaper it will be. If it gets cheap enough they will forget they do not have a job or a future—but they will be happy.

Ventura: Bicyclist threatened with screwdriver by vagrant on bike path along Harrison Ave.
On December 20th, Sunday at 1:45, the Ventura Police Department Command Center received a 911 call from the victim reporting that she had been robbed. She said the suspect, later identified as 32 year old Martha Berber, a vagrant, was armed with a screwdriver and attempted to stab her while trying to take her bicycle.
During the investigation officers learned that 24 year old Carpinteria resident, Maria Juarez, the victim, was on the bike path at the end of Harrison Ave., adjacent to highway 33, talking to a friend when she was confronted by Berber. Both were previously known to each other. Berber started to argue with Juarez, then began physically assaulting her. After several minutes they separated and Berber left, although returned a short time later armed with a screwdriver. This time, Berber attempted to stab Juarez with the screwdriver and tried taking her bicycle. Juarez held onto the bicycle. Before leaving, Berber punctured one of the bicycle tires with the screwdriver, and fled the area.
Officers searched the area and located Berber several blocks away from the scene. She was identified by the victim and arrested. Berber was booked into the Ventura County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, criminal threats and vandalism.
Juarez was slightly injured as a result of being physically assaulted, but did not require medical attention.

DUI Checkpoint Nets 3 Arrests
The Thousand Oaks Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on December 19, 2015, on Westlake Boulevard north of Cascade Avenue between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., and Hillcrest Drive east of Lynn Road between the hours of 12:00 am to 3:00 am. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.
DUI/Driver’s License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Ninety percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints.
, • 576 Vehicles Screened • 1 DUI-Alcohol suspects arrested • 0 DUI-Drug impaired suspects arrested • 1 Suspects arrested for illegal drugs (possession/transportation/sales) • 1 Arrested on other Criminal Charges • 4 Drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended/revoked • 16 Citations issued
As a result of this checkpoint; Rosenkranz was arrested for possession of marijuana while driving. Reigh was arrested for driving a vehicle without an ignition interlock device when her vehicle is required to have one, and Souza was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Law Enforcement emphasizes the preventable nature of drunk driving reminding everyone that all it takes is a little planning ahead. Designate a sober driver or call a cab. But whatever you do, don’t drink and drive. The California Office of Traffic Safety DDVIP (Designated Driver VIP) mobile app is now available for free download on iOS and Android devices. Launched last year, the new DDVIP app offers enhanced features, allowing users to “Map a Spot” with their current location to find DDVIP partnering establishments in their area or a “List of Spots” to search all participating bars and restaurants throughout California. Users will be offered free incentives at each bar to celebrate their life saving role. They can stay up-to-date with the latest from DDVIP and see what other users are saying via its social tab. Also through the app, for those who want to imbibe but also make it a point to plan ahead, users can easily order a sober ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb – all from one screen.
Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000, not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.
The Thousand Oaks Police Department will be conducting another DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Saturday February 13, 2016 in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways.
The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to “Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1”.

Hello, world: is your government driving you crazy?
Jon Rappoport
By Jon Rappoport
Politics, the god Hermes, and the big joke. Suppose, against all odds, enlightenment is funny and funny works like magic because it is magic
Note: If, as you read this article, you think I’m saying ‘don’t worry, be happy’ or ‘just laugh it off’ or ‘forget all the suffering in the world,’ you’re viewing it from the wrong angle. The 1968 riot at the Democratic National Convention was very serious, and it did nothing to shorten the war in Vietnam. It might have prolonged it. In this article, I’m talking about a basic psychological and spiritual inhibition that keeps people from a kind of mass reaction they believe is unthinkable—but a reaction that would change reality in a revolutionary fashion, if it came from their deepest core…
I could write a few thousand pages as a mere introduction—but I want to focus on one factor: what people project into their leaders.
Yes, I know, that sounds a bit odd. But stay with me. I’ll make it pay off.
For example, in the US, Republican voters and supporters project a huge amount of faith and energy into their Republican leaders. If you could see this, you would be watching a stunning “light show.” I’m talking about streamers and arrows and rays of energy.
And in this particular light show, there are messages: defund Planned Parenthood; cut off money for massive migration programs; stop Obamacare funding; don’t give money to the climate change payout program; stop bankrolling sanctuary cities.
That’s what these Republicans want from their leaders. That’s what they’re projecting with great insistence.
And this isn’t some kind of misplaced crazy light show, because guess what? Republicans control the US House of Representatives by a wide margin. Republicans: 246. Democrats: 188.
So when a massive federal spending bill ($1.1 trillion) comes up for a vote, as it just has, Republican Congress members can call the shots. They can respond to all those light rays being projected at them by their supporters all over the land. They can do it in a second. No problem. They can make their people happy. They can carry out their people’s wishes.
But…they didn’t. In fact, they just voted to fund all those programs I just mentioned. They pulled a vast switch. That’s right. That would be like all those Stars Wars characters, with their light sabers, suddenly projecting them through the movie screen right back at their adoring audience in the theater and burning them. What a message that would be.
Has your government ever done something like this in your country? I bet they have.
When it happens, the people, the voters, the supporters, who were sure their leaders would respond to them…well, to say they’re shocked would be a vast understatement.
However, scanning the newspapers and news broadcasts in America today, so far I find no reports of massive Republican demonstrations in the streets. Millions marching on Washington DC? Thousands? Hundreds? Dozens? Four? Two?
One guy in a Star Wars costume with a light saber trying to stop traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue?
Try to imagine the amount of energy and faith Republicans in America have been expending and projecting at their leaders—with this Big Switch as the result.
And then consider this: the Republicans in the US House of Representatives—many of them—never intended to go to war over this massive budget bill. It was never in the cards. They wear special shields, and the shields ward off all the projected rays coming at them from their faithful flock.
It’s not just the Republicans, in case you think I’m taking sides. What about the huge Democratic support for the invasion of Iraq under George W Bush? Did you see a few million Democrats in the streets right after the nearly unanimous Congressional vote to launch the planes and send the troops?
Wherever you live in the world, I’m sure you’ve seen this sort of thing. “Vote for Joe. He’ll do this and that.” Joe wins, and then doesn’t do either this or that. He was never going to. He was always wearing one of those shields that protected him from what his supporters were projecting at him.
This is called a joke.
That’s right. It may be a painful, repellent, nasty, killer joke with horrendous consequences, but it’s a joke.
The structure that is supposed to yield up “what the people want” is actually another structure whose features are unreported.
And the joke is, the people fall for it. Not just once, but over and over, on and on, year after year, decade after decade. It doesn’t matter what the evidence says. They fall for it.
And then, as another punchline, when some of those people stop falling for it and defect from the structure, they’re called strange and odd and weird and possibly dangerous.
“Don’t you get it, you strange person? You’re in a stage play. And your role involves going along with the charade. The real machinations are occurring behind the stage, and they’re not part of the play at all, but we don’t think about that. We keep projecting our energy and desires and faith into our purported leaders. Haven’t you read the script? The play falls apart if we don’t do that. It makes no sense if we don’t do that. A leader isn’t a leader if he doesn’t have adoring supporters who project their hopes and fears and desires and energy into him. That’s the way it works. So get with it.”
Now, possibly you think, when I talk about “projecting energy,” this is just a metaphor. I have news. It isn’t. This is as real as waves breaking on a beach. It’s happening all the time. People are doing it. They don’t want to stop doing it. It’s a habit that, for them, is harder to break than a heroin addiction.
One way or another, everybody is projecting energy. Of course, if they know that, they can decide where and how. They can, as individuals, create those projections in connection with achieving their deepest desires and dreams. In which case, there is a very good chance this would be a better world.
On the other hand, if they remain in the stage play and accept their assigned roles, they get jokes. And they’re the target of those massive jokes. And they don’t laugh. Generally, they go into a state of psychic paralysis, because they can’t figure out what just happened.
They might consult the news to find answers. That’s another joke. In the case of the $1.1 trillion budget bill that just passed the House in the US, they would encounter this: well, you see, the Republicans were trying to show support for their new Speaker, Paul Ryan, who is in favor of the bill, and if they didn’t vote for the bill the federal government would have to shut down because it would have no money for operational expenses, and the bill does allow the US to export crude oil, which is very important.
These are the added punchlines, which ought to send any sane person rolling on the floor with laughter.
You can laugh or cry, it’s your choice. But keep in mind that this joke really belongs to the people who launch it, and they don’t care which way you respond. To them, it’s still hilarious. And when they think about the millions of people who still vote for them, they put in a call for medical staff, because they’re going to laugh so hard they might need oxygen.
Sure, they leave Washington for a while, to “spend time with their families over the holidays,” just in case there is some nasty pushback from loyal voters, but they’re having a very merry Xmas, in part because they’re still chuckling and chortling about what they just put over.
George Burns once said: “In acting, sincerity is everything. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.”
In politics, the launching and projecting of the joke is handled by the politicians and the media. They work hand in hand to conceal the fact that it is a joke—which is what makes it so funny to all of them.
I can take this out much farther. Consensus reality, which is the lowest possible common denominator to which the planet can be reduced, in order to suck in the faith and projections of the largest number of people, is its own kind of joke. You can find such an awareness at least as far back as ancient Greece, in the person of Hermes, the trickster god.
Hermes, among his other duties, was the protector of wit. He was the upsetter of apple carts, the vast joker who, in his own way, if you read between the lines, was trying to show people they were living inside a continuum of the big con, the big hustle. He was, you could say, the grand defector. He moved among various realities. He knew the world was a badly written stage play that, on the heels of honest reviews, would have closed down after opening night.
Hermes’ powers were formidable. He had the juice to become king of Mt. Olympus, but he never wanted that job. Instead, he flew hither and yon, tearing holes in consensus reality, for his own amusement, but also to wake people up.
He was not always popular with leaders of the day.
If he were alive in our time, what might he do? I can imagine him trying to engineer, at a State of the Union Address, or during a Presidential debate, a massive amount of laughter from the live audience. Yes, he might attempt to promote a trick like that. All of sudden, out of nowhere, in a trickle, a little stream, then a river, people are laughing. It builds to an oceanic roar. It spills over to the television audience. No one is sure why, but they’re laughing at the President and candidates, and they’re having the time of their lives. On some level of happiness and joy, they’re finally responding to the joke. At last.
They get it.
Hence the old phrase, “He was laughed off the stage.”
And that’s exactly what happens. The leaders are laughed and ridiculed into oblivion. And so is the old consensus itself.
“You know, people have been telling that joke ever since I don’t when, and I never understood it, but now all of a sudden I do. And what makes it keep paying off, those leaders who are stage-center are so serious…wow, they’re killing me.”
Yes, that’s right. Well, they were killing you. It’s not quite the same anymore.
It turns out that, while we thought we were watching (and acting in) one kind of stage play, on a subconscious level we were all sitting in an audience, for the past ten thousand years, watching a tireless comedian doing variations on a cosmic joke, on and on, and there were zero laughs, zero, and nevertheless he kept going—and voila, the place finally exploded.
We had every reason not to laugh. All the suffering and the pain—but when we did connect with the joke, it proved to be enormously effective, beyond anything we could predicted.
Our core NATURAL response, beyond all “common sense,” from the depths of our NATURAL being, repressed for centuries, was titanic laughter, and it sent our esteemed leaders straight to the Outer Darkness.
Who knew? Go figure.
Bam. Pow.
The world starts over.

Santa Paula: Holiday Planning Commission Meeting
By Sheryl Hamlin
Citing schedule conflicts, the Santa Paula Planning Commission met on Friday, December 18, 2015 at 6:30 pm for its regularly scheduled meeting. There was no meeting in October or November 2015. There were two commissioners absent at this meeting: Mr. Wacker and Mr. Robinson. Present were Mr. Ikerd (chair), Mr. Demers and Mr. Sommer. Mr. Greg Kettles from the City Attorney’s office was present as were Mr. Tom Tarantino and Mr. N.D. Dobemeck from Santa Paula Planning.
Sheryl Hamlin spoke in public comments suggesting 1) that staff provide information about permits pulled by Limoneira for East Area 1 for the current fiscal year because the council was told at a prior meeting there would be infrastructure permits and 2) that the city provide links on the website to the audio recordings of the Planning Commission.
Marijuana Ordinance
Mr. Kettles presented with staff report on the proposed medical marijuana ordinance citing California’s 2015 medical marijuana laws saying that each city has until March 1, 2016 to enact an ordinance; otherwise, the state will regulate. He cited one case from 2013 (City of Riverside v. Inland Empire Patients Health and Wellness Center, Inc.) where the court confirmed the ability of local government to regulate marijuana.
The California laws have three parts: licensing, cultivation and physician oversight. A summary of the laws may be reviewed here. Kaiser Permanente’s statement may be read here. The official State of California site under the Department of Public Health is here.
A summary of the proposed Santa Paula ordinance is given below:
Chair Ikerd asked for a definition of “mobile dispensing” to which the response was a comparison to catering trucks that come to your home. Commissioner Demers said that marijuana is a controlled substance in the eyes of the federal government (see Kaiser’s statement above) so there is a potential liability to any entity with exposure to marijuana. Saying he had first hand exposure to medical marijuana, he has seen that it is poorly regulated with numerous loopholes and that the cities should wait until the State of California is serious about regulation. The State’s responsibilities in the new laws are shown on this page.
Although not discussed at the Planning Commission meeting, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on December 15, 2015 to prohibit cannabis in unincorporated areas of the county taking a “wait-and-see” approach to new laws and leaving the door open to revisiting the topic as new information arises. View the county presentation here. The county presentation appears focused on recreational use of marijuana rather than on medical use, which is what the new California laws address.
In Public Comments two speakers rose to speak about the proposed ordinance. Robert XXX, 59, of Santa Paula (last name redacted for privacy) is undergoing radiation. His medicine is delivered discretely. He needs this for pain. Marie XXX, 44 from Santa Paula, became sick four years ago and her doctor prescribed pain killers to which she became addicted. She took herself off the addicting medicine and learned about medical marijuana, which she says kills the pain from her extreme ulcerative colitis. Without the marijuana, she could not eat. She too receives her marijuana via delivery. She said that marijuana does not damage the body like the drugs and also “works wonders” for cancer.
Tom Tarantino suggested the city attorney explain the effect of the Planning Commission’s resolution. Mr. Kettles responded saying that the resolution tonight will go before the City Council for approval. Mr. Sommer added that this ordinance is not stopping anything because marijuana is already illegal. Mr. Demers reiterated his concern about lack of regulation.
The commission voted 3-0 approving the ordinance as written.
Clearly there is discord between the federal and state laws, although the 2015 California law is directed solely toward medical uses of marijuana and creates a layer to track the product from cultivation to delivery.
Type 41 Alcohol License for Best Bar-B-Que
Type 41 (on site beer and wine) requires full meal service according to the State of California, a condition fulfilled by Best Bar-B-Que. The restaurant has 37 seats, no live entertainment, no expansion plans and is located in a commercially zoned parcel. There is no undue concentration of such venues in the area. Mr. Doberneck, Associate Planner, said there are only four such licenses in the immediate area. The rest appear to be off-site sales, according to his map. The applicant, Rajpal Singh Behniwal, was present at the meeting. There were no public comments. The item was approved unanimously.
Community Care Facility Conditional Use Permit (CUP)
Project No. 2015-CUP-05: A request for a Conditional Use Permit to allow a commercial Community Care Facility for six or fewer persons, at an existing healthcare service building.
Sheryl Hamlin spoke in Public Comments with three recommendations for the CUP: 1) restrict this to senior living and prohibit drug and alcohol rehab which requires extensive permitting regardless of size, 2) require the facility provide ‘affordable’ rates and 3) require a business license so that the city can determine the concentration of such facilities, as was discussed with the Type 41 beverage license.
Mr. Doberneck presented the staff report for the request of Dream Haven Care to establish a Community Care Facility at 404 E. Main Street. This report concentrated on the renovation and history of the project. There is nothing in the staff report about the applicant or the business.
The city attorney said that the state wants these types of facilities because of the shortage of senior housing. The Chair said these are a way to create a home environment for the elderly. Below is a picture of the room at the proposed center from the staff report.
The item was approved 3-0 with the addition of research into the business license.
Note that the applicant owns two other facilities in California: Camarillo and Oxnard. The Santa Paula location would be the third facility in California. The fictitious name was filed on February 7, 2015 in the Fillmore Gazette as follows:
FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME STATEMENT File No. 10002904. The following person (persons) is (are) doing business as: Fictitious Business Name(s) DREAM HAVEN OF SANTA PAULA, 404 E. Notice—in accordance with subdivision (a) of Section 17920, a fictitious name statement generally expires at the end of five years from the date on which it was filed in the office of the county clerk, except, as provided in subdivision of section 17920, where it expires 40 days after any change in the facts set forth in the statement pursuant to section 17913 other than a change in residence address or registered owner. A new fictitious business name statement must be filed before the expiration. The filing of this statement does not of itself authorize the use in this state of a fictitious business name in violation of the rights of another under Federal, State, or Common Law (see section 14411 ET SEQ., Business and Professions Code). This statement was filed with the County Clerk of Ventura on the date indicated by the file stamp above. PUBLISHED IN THE FILLMORE GAZETTE, FEBRUARY 26, MARCH 5, 12, 19, 2015
However, a business by this same name and applicant located in Oxnard is shown as dissolved in 2006 on this database.
Dream Haven appears to be a franchise operating in different states per this report with centers in California, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Texas and Utah.
The State of California defines “integral facilities” as a virtual collection of the same business owned by the same person. This business with two existing facilities and a potential third facility appears to fall in that category and could require more licensing.
The City Council should ask the applicant for more information about his business. Neither the applicant’s business history nor the proposed rates at this location were discussed at the Planning Commission hearing.

Police & City Employees Volunteer at Fifth Annual Salvation Army/Simi Valley PD Toy Event
December 19, 2015, marked the 5th year for the Salvation Army/Simi Valley Police Department Holiday Toy Event that benefits local families. Simi Valley police and city employees volunteered their day to help Simi Valley families by handing out toys to over 300 less fortunate children and special gifts to over 50 senior community members. 80 lucky children also won a brand new bicycle during the holiday gift give away event, compliments of the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise.
In their ongoing partnership with the Salvation Army Simi Valley Food Bank and their new event partners, the Simi Valley Unified School District, police personnel and professional staff members from throughout the City joined together to help make this special holiday event a huge success. This year’s event was hosted at Monte Vista School where Principal, Dr. Stephen Pietrolungo and Officer Rob Longdon took turns playing the role of Santa this year. Both Dr. Pietrolungo and Officer Longdon helped spread holiday cheer to all of the children and their family members who were there to share in a special day.
Many of the toys were provided through the generosity of City of Simi Valley employees who selected a child’s name from an “Angel Tree” and then went shopping for their special holiday gifts. When all was said and done, the City employees had sponsored 200 children. Additional toys were provided by the Simi Valley Police Foundation Touch-A-Truck Event which hosted a toy drive in support of the Salvation Army/Simi Valley Police Department Holiday Toy Event.
During the evening hours of December 19th, Santa, (Principal Pietrolungo) and his volunteer Simi Valley Police Department and Ventura County Fire Department elves delivered bikes and holiday gifts to five local families. The five families were selected by the Salvation Army to have Santa personally deliver their gifts.
All of the families that participated in this year’s holiday event had a special celebration and reminded all of us who were a part of it what the reason for the season is. On behalf of the Simi Valley Police Department and all of our holiday toy event partners, we would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

The first checkpoint was conducted in the westbound lanes of Gonzales Road west of Snow Avenue. The second checkpoint was conducted in the southbound lane of Hobson Way south of Seventh Street. Drunk Driving Ruins the Holidays -- Results of DUI Checkpoint in Ventura, One Arrest
DUI Checkpoint Nets 1 Arrests
The Ventura Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Saturday December 20, 2015, at Seaward Ave. and Alessandro Dr. between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 2:15 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.
DUI/Drivers License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries.
During this Checkpoint, 391 Vehicles Screened
1 DUI-Alcohol suspects arrested
1 Suspects arrested for illegal drugs (possession/transportation/sales)
3 Drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended/revoked
10 Citations issued
Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.
The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’.
Police Aim to Save Lives With ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ Crackdown
If you’re enjoying the holidays with a drink, The Ventura Police Department has a message for you: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Due to the increase in drunk-driving-related fatalities around the holidays each year, law enforcement agencies across America will be actively searching for and arresting drunk drivers from December 18 to January 3.
As part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign period; police, sheriff and the CHP will be deploying DUI Checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols during the upcoming 17 day DUI Enforcement Campaign throughout the region. Ventura PDs conducting a DUI Checkpoint on Saturday December 19, 2015.
There are 10,000 reasons to crackdown: in 2013, 10,076 people were killed in crashes involving a drunk driver. In December 2013 alone there were 733 people killed in crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. Twenty-three of those deaths occurred on Christmas Day. California was witnessed to 98 deaths and another 1,852 injured in alcohol involved collisions in December 2013.
“It’s time for all drivers to get the message,” said Chief Ken Corney. “Drunk driving is a choice you make, and when you make that choice, people get hurt or die. That’s why we’re joining with law enforcement nationwide to share the message: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” “The safest way to get home,” Chief Corney said, “is to drive sober or catch a ride with a sober designated driver.”
Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol. Everyone should be mindful that if you’re taking medication – whether prescription or over-the-counter – drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment affects.

Ventura PD reminds everyone to follow these simple tips to stay safe: • Plan a safe way to get home before you attend the party. Alcohol impairs judgment, as well as reaction time. If you’re impaired you’re more likely to choose to drive drunk. • Designate a sober driver; take public transportation, a car service, or a call a sober friend of family member to get home. • Walking while impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home. • Use your community’s sober ride program. • If you see someone you think is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them get home safely.
If you’re caught drinking and driving you could face jail time, fines, loss of driver’s license, towing fees, and other DUI expenses, totaling $10,000 on average. That’s not a small price, and that doesn’t even count the heftier price you could pay: the price of your life or someone else’s.
In addition to reminding all drivers to drive sober, Chief Corney is calling on everyone to be alert and ‘Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911! If you see a dangerous driver call immediately! If someone you know is about to drive after drinking, take their keys and help them get home safely. “We’ve got to work together to make our roads safer this December and year-round,” he said.
Remember, driving after drinking should never be an option. Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
Funding for this holiday campaign is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
