"I want to try something different today."
Instantly unease fill her. Then guilt. Being around her boss and getting to spend one on one time with him used to make her feel so special. He's only ever done what's best for her. She knew that.
He had taught her how to make the voices go away. How to calm herself down. He had showed her what ice cream tasted like. What it was like to see her brother not have to worry about anything anymore. He had showed her what she was really capable off.
How she could turn her charm into a real dagger. How to protect herself. He had showed her how to make clay out of glue. That she really could do anything she wanted to do. She remembers how safe and warm he had once made her feel so she pushes yesterday's events away.
It didn't really happen. It was a bad dream. He would never hurt her. It's because she deserved it. She needed to be useful to him. It was the least she could do.
"Ok!" She smiled, enthusiastic.
Yesterday didn't happen. It didn't happen. She deserved it.
He led her into the same room he did yesterday. This time a fresh trap was placed on the ground. Already her legs are shaking.
No. No. No
A piece of paper was placed in her hands. It was an older speech but, she had it memorized all the same. Maybe today would reall just be like any other but, easier? She really did let him down yesterday- no it didn't happen. Lately, he had been wanting to work on her confidence when it came to talking to others. Also, to work on speaking in general.
"This time I'll let you keep the paper. I'm sorry, I expected too much of you. I want you to know that this means the punishment today will be different."
She watches her boss go to a closet and pull a man out. They were tied up and gagged. She could see the fear in their eyes as they were thrown to the ground. She was frozen in place as she realizes she knows this man.
He was the man that worked at the ice cream place they would go to.
She looked at her boss, wanting to speak but, having no idea what to say. This couldn't really be happening, right? This had to be a joke, right?
He just smiled and tapped the paper.
"Remember to speak clearly and loudly. For every mistake you make I will have no choice but, to hurt this man."
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The ones that he had taught her to make whenever she was feeling stressed. She knows the first line by heart.
There was a loud snap and she screamed.
She was perfectly fine, but her boss had whipped the man. When did he-
"Remember to look up at the audience! You have to engage them otherwise, why should they listen to you?"
The man was bleeding and trying to get free. It was no use though. When she had closed her eyes he had been connected to some kind of hook? In the ground.
She couldn't stop the way her body started to shake in pure fear. She had a few false starts. Not daring to speak again until she knew her voice would hold steady. She would be good. No, she would be perfect. She wouldn't let anyone get hurt on her behalf. That was a promise she had made to herself long ago.
She broke her promise. Again and again. She knew better. She knew this speech by heart but, she would skip ahead. Skipping over words or changing them slightly. She was on the last paragraph now. A whole 15 minutes had passed and in that time he was lashed again and again. The least she could was at least get the very last half perfect.
She looked at him in the eyes and at that moment it was like nothing else existed. Their hearts beat at the same time. Chests heaving with pain, exhaustion, fear. The same tears started to flow from both of their eyes. They now saw themselves from their eyes.
Men weren't supposed to cry. She needed to stop crying before it ruined her speech. She could feel the blood soaking her back. What was he making this poor girl do? Why couldn't she just get this right? Her voice was nothing more than background noise. The pain was worse than anything she's ever felt.
He felt so bad for him. He had a family that was waiting for her. He never knew he had a brother. It seemed so nice to have kids of her own. She's been through so much already. He was jealous of her loving family.
He couldn't hate her. I wish I could save you. I'm sorry. Don't cry!
They wished they could comfort one another. They had to get up before they were punished again. Someone was speaking now. It couldn't be registered. A sense of impending doom and dread started to fill them. They had to get up. I have to save you.
A loud bang.
