Many thanks to Mike Miller of NIPSCO, who gave a presentation on flammable gasses at the Albion Fire Department recently. Miller, also an experienced firefighter, used props and demonstrations to show the properties and hazards of propane and natural gas.

Protective concepts in combustible gas and vapor detection

… In the UK and Europe, the hazardous location classification scheme is based on “Zones” that are defined by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) standards.  The most important difference is that the IEC/CENELEC system is based on dividing the level of hazard probability into three zones rather than two divisions.

Lava has reached the Puna Geothermal Venture power plant site.  Ten of eleven geothermal wells have been quenched and they are racing to get that site secured in case the lava flow begins to overrun it.  They have to shut down the wells and then cap them but whether anything they get capped with can survive being swamped with lava isn’t a guarantee.

tl;dr any lava getting into the geothermal wells will be a bad thing regardless of whether the lava encounters water or flammable gases, it will just be a difference in magnitude of explosive reaction. 

EDITED TO ADD: County of Hawai’i Civil Defense posted a Tweet just before 10pm Pacific saying that there had been an ash plume explosion at Kilauea’s summit just before 6pm Hawaiian, and that lava crossed onto PGV land from the fountaining fissure 22
