BOP in Russian “Vor”/ English for Thief. /// Russian criminal tattoo flash-sheet part of the volume 2 (titled “Criminal”) of my upcoming flashbook Lenin (top right): Lenin is held by many criminals to be the chief ‘pakhan’ (leader) of the Communist Party. The letters BOP, under his image, carry a double meaning: The acronym stands for 'Leader of the October Revolution’ but also spells the Russian word 'VOR’ (thief). In the 1900s, prisoners believed placing tattooed portraits of Lenin on their chests would protect them from a firing squad. The authorities would not shoot at any images of their leaders; instead, they would shoot prisoners in the back of the head… The “warrior grin” at the top left is (Tigers, leopards or snarling wolves) are called Oskals, the Russian word for ‘Big Grin.’ These tattoos indicate aggression or hostility toward the authorities. The bottom left sentence translates; “I’m a son of the world of thieves” The text around the skull translates: “In defiance of fate” A tulip or a rose ensnared in barbed wire or wrapped around a dagger is symbolic of a convicted imprisoned before the age of 18 The cross means that the inmate is a thief

Russian criminal tattoos /// All tattoo available /// Email for appointment ///
This flash-sheet is part of the Vol. II titled: Criminal of the series of flashbook coking our this year.
Common designs and themes grew over the years, often having different meanings depending on the location of the tattoo on the body of the inmate/criminal. The imagery often does not literally mean what it is depicting - for example, tattoos displaying Nazi imagery represent a rejection of authority rather than an adherence to Nazism. According to lexicographer Alexei Plutser-Sarno, the tattoos become the only "real aspects of his life". They are a symbol of the owner's commitment to war against the non-thief, the police (menty), and the "bitch" (suka). The environment in the Soviet era was one of heavy visual propaganda, and the tattoos are a reaction to that, and a "grin at authority" (oskal na vlast), often directly parodying official Soviet slogans with Communist Party leaders often depicted as devils, donkeys, or pigs.
A thief's collection of tattoos represent his "suit" (mast), which indicates his status within the community of thieves and his control over other thieves within the thieves. The environment in the Soviet era was one of heavy visual propaganda
Writing on the knife translates to “Death”
Both crosses represent female thieves, often worn on fingers and chest
The Madonna shows his loyalty to the criminal underworld.
KOT // in English: Tomcat // The abbreviation KOT is the language of thieves in Russia. The acronym KOT, originated from the Soviet Union correctional facilities (circ. 1960’s) stands for: Korennoy Obitatel Tyurmy (translate Native Prison Inhabitant). The cat is one of the oldest symbol of the criminal world. They are the personification of the thieves, their fortunes, prudence, patience, the speed of their action, their ruthlessness and rage. . Top left writing reads: NVOVDO, this is a rare acronym understood only by the “initiated”. It translates “Do not touch the thief, he will always make you surrender” . Top right writing translate “All power to the Godfather” . Bottom right cat’s hat symbol means: otritsaly - a thief who refuses to submit and is a malicious infringer of the prison rules . This flash sheet is part of the volume 2 (titled “Criminal”) of my upcoming flashbook series but it’s more importantly part of a much larger project I’m working on related to criminal tattooing. . /// flash all available to tattoo /// DM or email to set up an appointment /// Thief In Law /// Алты́нного во́ра ве́шают, а полти́нного че́ствуют // Little thieves are hanged, but great ones escape [cit.]
