Modern Times Extraordinary Times West Coast IPA (Picked up at their Flavordome on 30th Street). A 4 of 4. Really incredible mix of tropical fruit, stone fruit, and quite a bit of pine and herbal qualities behind that. The body has a firm bitterness up front with some bright tropical sweetness that lingers with just a touch of bitterness in the finish. Quite excellent.
Modern Times We Love You San Diego Double IPA (Picked up at their Flavordome on 30th Street). A 4 of 4. Honestly, one of the best from Modern Times in a while, I think, and that’s saying something. Incredible tropical complexity in the body with a slightly more subdued nose that brings out more white-wine like qualities. Nice chewy body with moderate fruity sweetness, and a subtle bitterness that fades in in the finish.
Modern Times Rapid Unplanned Disassembly Double IPA (Picked up at their Flavordome on 30th Street). A 4 of 4. Lots of bright tropical fruit and a lot of orange citrus -- both juicy and somewhat pith-like presence. You can tell this is a pretty big beer up front, with some alcohol underneath the fruity sweetness, and some alongside the firm bitter finish. The body is quite creamy, as you’d expect, and this is quite great overall, just like most of Modern Times’ hazy IPAs.
Modern Times Totally Open in Santa Barbara (Picked up at Modern Times’ Flavordome on 30th Street). A 4 of 4. Yep, this is an exemplar of a hazy, big IPA. The smell is mostly tropical and stone fruit with just a touch of citrus behind it. The body is relatively aggressive with bitterness from the start with some fruit juice qualities. The 8% starts to creep and clean your palate near the finish, but still a little bit of fruitiness lingers.
Modern Times Unlike Birds This Is Real (Collaboration with Other Half) on tap at their North Park Tasting Room. A 4 of 4. Like most of Modern Times’ offerings, this is big, juicy, and hazy. Smells of a ton of tropical fruit, but a bit more citrus-dominant than others. The body has a ton of sweet fruity juice qualities and some nice firm bitterness that carries through to the finish. Sweeter than some of the others, but simply great.
Modern Times Hedge Witch on tap at their North Park Tasting Room. A 4 of 4. Really great tropical fruit in the nose, and a bit more sweetness up front than I was expecting. Honestly a bit hard to tell apart from Modern Times other big hazy offerings, but delivers a great juicy body and a really complex hop profile. Finishes firmly bitter with the alcohol well-hidden.
Modern Times Masks of Power IPA on tap at their Flavordome on 30th Street. A 3 of 4. A solid IPA that’s quite similar to many others from Modern Times - mostly tropical and citrus fruit and a nice, thicker body. Finishes dry and resinous. Nothing really sets this above and beyond others, though.
Modern Times Double Dry-Hopped Orderville (Picked up at the brewery). A 4 of 4. The usual Orderville is great. This is mostly the same in the body but stupidly pungent in the nose and up front. A ton of tropical fruit complexity and some lighter yeasty and malt notes are behind it. Quite smooth and tasty, and the thickness in the body and the aggressiveness of the tropical notes make this worth it over the usual Orderville.
