I don't want to chose and you can't make me.
I love both of them and I've read both series of books and seen all the films (though not the last Hobbit film, idk didn't do it for me) and I have a serious love for both of the stories.
If I was to chose between books it would have to be Harry Potter. I love what Tolkien writes about but how he writes just takes forever, no one needs that much detail. No one. Well maybe me but not in the book, maybe somewhere in the back. Oh wait... And maybe it's just because Harry Potter was a massive part of my childhood where ever I went.
The films are both incredible and I love the world each story is set in. There's a certain charm to the hidden wizarding world of Harry Potter but the vastness of Middle Earth is incredible. And the different languages and peoples that inhabit Middle Earth are each so different, not to say Rowling hasn't done brilliantly with things like Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find Them. The world of Middle Earth is infinitely more interesting than the wizarding world though just because there's so much more.
The films are difficult because I love them both pretty much equally. And if it came down to it I'd just put on whatever was closest or whatever I hadn't seen soonest.
So. I think I've answered that it's Lord of the Potters. Harry Rings.
I just don't know.
