Another #lowrider from the #seattleautoshow - this time it’s “Red Light Distrikt” - show lowriders always have a name. Featured in @lowridermagazine in 2015, there are a number of unique things about this car - starting with the vehicle itself - it’s a 1982 Fleetwood Brougham #Coupe. - While the #CoupeDeVille is well known, for a few short years the top-of-the-line #FleetwoodBrougham also offered a coupe. The Coupe was extended to the Fleetwood line in 1980 and continued in production into 1985 - a few months after the other big C-body coupes (Coupe DeVille, Olds 98, Buick Electra) were dropped at the end of their cycles and replaced with front-drivers. - At the time the decision was made to offer a 2-door #Fleetwood - fully loaded and distinguished by a different roof treatment - the Coupe DeVille was outselling the sedan every year. But thanks to a second gas crisis, a recession, and changing tastes, sales of the biggest coupes fell off a cliff in the mid-80s, even as big sedans began to bounce back. The ’85, of which just 2,300 were made, was the last traditional full-size, rear-drive #Cadillac coupe. - Red Light sports many modification typically made to these coupes - including the front fascia swap, which uses the front clip from a 1990-92 Fleetwood Brougham sedan. The sedan was in production, with a total reskin in 1980 and an “aero look” update in 1990; and swapping over the “aero” front is very popular. This one also has a custom grill and lots of detail work where the factory was content for you not to look. - It also has a replacement powerplant - Cadillac’s HT4100 V8 was designed to give adequate power with adequate mileage, but actually produced neither. The 3,900-lb. Fleetwood was lots of car for just 125hp and 190lb./ft. to haul around, and the HT earned an unenviable reputation for fragility. Red Light uses a small block Chevy, another popular choice for (lots) more power and durability. The frame was reworked and strengthened for the #hydraulics setup too. - According to Lowrider’s account, this spectacularly clean show car, rescued from a farmer’s field and clearly thoroughly re-engineered for it’s new purpose, was built at home in a carport!
