hi ive got an AA in biology already and am starting my anthropology degree in the fall. i know what i really really want to study specifically is neanderthals and other ancient humans, but my parents are concerned about finding a job with this. do any of you know what classes i should look for/ what career to aim for? this is just really a subject i want to know everything about.
Congrats on your AA! Your parents’ concerns are valid -- I’m sure all of us have those same concerns too. If you’re adamant about this path, take as many biological anthropology and archaeology courses you possibly can. Throw in forensics and osteology courses too. Do your best to acquire any internship opportunities as possible. Try to get a forensics internship. I know it’s not the same and I know it’s not easy, but it can give you some related experience. Save money and go to field school. You must go to field school. Talk to your professors and try to get into their research labs. Stay up to date with recent research. Doing this can help set you on your way to becoming a bioanthropologist/palaeoanthropologist/archaeologist/etc.
It’s definitely not an easy path. You may end up doing something completely different from what you intend to do. You may end up working in a museum or a research lab or a police unit or the NatGeo. You may end up getting into resource management instead or you may decide forensics is pretty interesting. The good thing is, if your plans don’t fall through, there are plenty of related fields you can accidentally stumble into. The bad news is, you’ll have to fight everyone for it. And to give yourself a fighting chance, go to field school, make connections, get involved.
