On Milton Hill, Milton Massachusetts. House from around 1855 with the garden design by Fletcher Steele.
Rocklawn was the summer house of the Stoddard Family with the gardens created on a hillside overlooking the ocean at Bass Rocks. Fletcher Steele designed the gardens in the 1930s. The Stoddards were friends with my Great Aunt Marjorie and she stayed at this house many summers in the forties and fifties. Fletcher Steele designed the gardens at Rolling Ridge, North Andover Massachusetts. 1916-22 The summer house of Ethan Allen from New York. Semi preserved as a Methodist Church retreat. These steps and fountain were 20 years before the most famous of Steele’s gardens, Naumkeag in Stockbridge Massachusetts.

Art Deco design by Fletcher Steele. This garden was for Claude Branch in Seekonk Massachusetts. Claude Branch was a well known Boston and Providence lawyer, who was Assistant Attorney General, partner in the Boston law firm Choate Hall and Stewart and was President of the Providence and Worcester RR. This is one of the first Deco garden designs in the country.
