Just rereading Over Fathoms Deep to get me through a tricky week and can I just say that a) it’s incredible and it may actually kill me, and b) my entire chest has been tight and tense for CHAPTERS AND CHAPTERS because oh my GOD Sherlock, please just tell him all the thoughts in your head. This is beautiful!!!!!!! I’m in love with what you pointed out about this moment being literally framed by a doorway, and this very delicate light illuminating Max in the darkness. Everything about it is so beautiful and meaningful, combining the way Anne’s trauma caused her to help Max as an extension of helping herself and how she then sees in Max a reflection, and then also how for the first time she’s letting herself see a woman as an object of her own desire, and this moment of suddenly seeing and being seen in return, this “furtive observation,” scares and deeply touches her ❤️

He’s cursed with constant introspection: to look forever inward at himself, to measure his value, his utility, the depths of the rot that’s been consuming him since London and maybe even before then. But he can ignore his body, has been training himself to do it his entire life, to ignore hunger and thirst and pain and desire and exhaustion until the form he inhabits is nothing but a vessel, an extension of his will. I also think that part of the gossip surrounding Thomas’ “madness” is absolutely him being into dudes, when Hennessey is eyebrowing at James for using Thomas’ first name, I think he’s genuinely worried bc he KNOWS that James is queer, he can see how enthralled he is and he too has heard the rumours ‘is it true he’s quite mad?’

and YEAH i think hennessey definitely Knows(TM). i’d previously written james as not knowing that hennessey knows, but recently i’ve shifted to writing it as like. an unspoken thing between them because chances are hennessey was the reason james hadn’t already been reported to his superiors for sodomy or whatever the fuck (but i do hc that he and other officers have been flogged for it r i p we don’t talk about that)
(although ALSO that does then make hennessey’s ‘not this. it is too profane’ speech sound more like he’s lying/just saying what hamilton needs to hear rather than what he believes, which... I DON’T KNOW THAT I AGREE WITH, plus my reading has always included james being 100% shocked/surprised by hennessey’s betrayal BUT I GUESS LIKE... MAYBE PART OF THAT IS BECAUSE HENNESSEY HAD PREVIOUSLY ACCEPTED IT... EH WHATEVER IT IS WHAT IT IS)
