Autumn in New York – Billie Holiday
Autumn in New York was written by Vernon Duke in 1934 and offered to producer Murray Anderson for his Broadway musical Thumbs Up! The song’s bruised optimism holds that a New York autumn is “often mingled with pain,” but also that “it’s good to live it”. Such a juxtaposition perfectly fits Holiday’s yearning voice and Oscar Peterson’s delicate, airy piano.
The song was recorded in 1953 but didn’t make the final cut on the original 10-inch vinyl LP An Evening with Billie Holiday which had only 8 tracks. It was finally included in 1956, when the 10-inch format was phased out, the album was reissued with the same artwork, as a 12-inch LP called A Recital by Billie Holiday.
Along with Billie Holiday’s vocal, and Oscar Peterson’s piano, you can hear Charlie Shavers on trumpet, Flip Phillips on tenor sax, Barney Kessel on guitar, Alvin Stoller on drums, and Ray Brown on bass.
