Came across this realtor called "Seattle Afloat," that only sells floating houses. Not houseboats, houses. As you can see, they really pack them in here. This 1927 build in Seattle, WA has 2bds, 1ba, 1,044sqft, and is $2.189m + 822/mo HOA. There are less expensive ones as low as $345k and I don't know why this one is so much, so I decided to take a look.
This is the "street" it's on. I'm surprised that is has shrubbery and flowers in the front, just like a regular home. Located on Portage Bay, off of Lake Union.
Nice entrance. It looks like an ordinary nautical themed house.
Pretty spacious living room with lots of windows and doors to the deck.
Look at how cute the kitchen is. Love the cabinets. The house is very open.
Roomy eat-in kitchen has a built-in banquette in the corner.
Over in this corner, there's a long counter and a piano with room to spare.
Look at the adorable little vintage tub.
There's only one bath, but it's so pretty.
The bedrooms are on the upper level.
This looks like the primary with a wall of closets, a large skylight, and a door to the upper deck.
It's a nice, large deck.
On the lower level, there's a lovely porch that wraps around the house.
Place to park the boat on the side of the house.
And, there's also another place to sit.
After looking at the other homes, I can't understand why this one is so much more. There aren't that many for sale, and none of them are over $2m, except for 2 huge ones that are $5m.
Grimshaw and Concrete Valley are developing Modular Water Dwellings for areas at risk from rising sea levels. According to IPCC, sea levels could rise to 1.1 meters by 2100, primarily due to rising temperatures melting the ice caps and the expansion of seawater as it warms. The floating houses would...
I personally have never seen it in a movie, but they say that The Aqua Star floating home has been in several, and now it's for sale. 1985 build in Portland, OR, 2bds, 3ba, 2,737 sq ft, $1.35m + $2,060mo. HOA. Also, it comes fully furnished.
So, you couldn't call it a houseboat, it's like a novelty home on a dock in a river- The Columbia River, specifically. It looks brand new, so it's been completely renovated.
Very attractive guest powder room.
Windows all around let in lots of light and provide a panoramic view. Look at the shiny metal ceiling.
The ceiling curves here and features a high window with up-lighting over a bar. Love the little metal wood burning stove in the corner.
It's a wet bar with illuminated shelving. If you don't drink, you could display a collection here.
Open concept main living area is pretty spacious.
Dining area is in its own round space with a door to the deck.
Love the blue cabinets, but the upper half of the kitchen is too white. Nice illuminated shelving.
View from the kitchen.
Round bedroom has sliders to the deck.
Ensuite shower room.
Look at the little half-moon laundry room.
The primary suite is on the upper level. This is nice. I like the sculptural architecture. Love the lighted railing.
It's spacious up here, and kind of resembles a ship.
Looking down at the main floor.
Very nice.
Primary bedroom entrance.
It's smaller than I thought it would be. You can see the tub next to the bed.
There's also a shower with frosted glass windows.
Behind the bed wall there's a mini kitchen and some storage.
The toilet and sink are separate.
Plus a walk-in closet.
There's a roof-top deck for the 2nd level.
The large main deck accommodates sitting and dining areas with room to spare.
I don't know how they pulled it off, b/c the listing says that the Municipal Code has imposed restrictions on similar structures, so it's rare and exclusive- you can see that it's the only non-boat. The 1971 floating house took a father & son 4yrs. to build in Santa Barbara, CA. It has 2bds, 1ba, $2.750m. (They don't give the sq. footage.)
I'm not sure if it's worth the price, even though CA is high. It must be grandfathered in so they can't restrict the new owner, I guess.
Has a larger kitchen than most of the smaller floating homes.
Supposedly has all high-end appliances including a d/w, fridge, freezer, w/d, but no heat or a/c. Is that needed on the water in CA? I don't know.
Dining area beside the kitchen.
It doesn't say, but I'm assuming that it comes furnished.
Everything looks brand new. This bath is pristine.
The shower features decorative tile.
So, it has 2 levels.
It took them 4 yrs. to design and they put in a bedroom that's open to the kitchen. Also, don't be stumbling around in a drunken stupor, or you'll fall right down that stairwell.
The stairs look a little treacherous. It looks like they have storage underneath.
Down on the lower level they have a sewing room. The stairs look a little treacherous. I'm wondering if this is meant to be the 2nd bedroom.
Nice little laundry area with a sink.
This looks like a foyer. You could probably put a desk or something in this space.
Narrow deck.
There's a ladder to reach the hatch, so I suppose that you could make a rooftop deck, unless there is a restriction.
I would imagine that you can dock your boat right by the house.
The pontoons are visible. I've never seen that before on a boathouse.
There's supposed to be a hot outdoor shower. You can wave to the surfers as you shower.
You can see that it's the only house in the harbor. I would feel some kind of way about that.
