What so funny about this? Before settling on this format for our spoonerism, I played with a couple of different ways of presenting it, including a riddle (what’s the difference beween…) and a symbolic representation using the equal sign. The easy part is creating a spoonerism is the spoonerism itself. The hard part is finding the right context that’s short and sweet. Spoonerisms don’t have to be fall on the floor, hold on to your ribs, funny. They just need to produce that little glow in your brain when you realize it IS a spoonerism. In today’s joke we’re talking about a “flood map.” This is a particular kind of map, produced by the weather service which shows where flood waters are likely to occur after a heavy rainstorm or hurricane. If you’re going to drive a truck into one of these areas, for example, the city of New Orleans, then you’d be wise to use “mud flaps;” these are flat flaps of rubber that cover the rear parts of rear tires, to prevent mud from splashing up onto the truck or vehicles directly behind a truck. Unfortunately, they won’t stop either the rain, flood or the mud.itself. So they are not all that useful, especially if the truck gets stuck in the mud. If the driver HAD checked the necessary flood maps, then the truck could have avoided the area altogether. If you’re not laughing at any of this then perhaps YOU’RE a stick-in-the-mud yourself. And THAT’s what’s so funny!
