So this one... got a little longer than anticipated. But it's still under 2k, so it's Fine. Since you gave me options, I ended up using two of the three as inspiration:

⛄🤍 — “your cheeks are red from the cold. you look adorable.” 🍪 — “i baked cookies. they’re… questionable.”

The other one didn't really fit well, but maybe I'll write something else with it once I get through the rest of my prompts. We'll see, no promises!

I had in mind that this one is technically part of a larger story I've been thinking about for a few days now, but I think I worked in enough detail that it makes sense on its own (I hope). I didn't want to actually get into the larger plot of the story because it's not quite the cheerful vibe I wanted for a Christmas-themed fic, so this is just a little soft "slice of life" style moment for Rei and Akai.

Their neighbors are all out, this time of day, so Shuuichi settles himself on the steps leading up to their floor, waiting for Rei to return from his quick grocery trip. He left nearly an hour ago now, but that's not unexpected; Shuuichi will only start worrying in another half hour – and, besides, he knows where to find him. Rei needs these moments of independence, even if it is just a quick walk to the grocery store and back by himself.

So, instead of worrying over his lover, he occupies his time taking in the various Christmas decorations strung up around him, from wreaths on doors, and garland wrapped around stair rails, to the lights in shop windows across the street. The interior of their own apartment even has a string of multicolored lights hung around the doorway. It isn't much, but last year Rei hadn't even wanted that much.

Shuuichi doesn't mind, really. He remembers Christmas celebrations with his family back in England, warm and fond, but it's not something he longs for again. The only reason he'd pushed for decorations in the first place was an attempt to bring Rei a little cheer – and he was rewarded for his efforts the first night they snuggled up together, on a couch that was really too small for the pair of them, the ceiling light off, sitting in the colorful glow of the string lights, something akin to awe in Rei's eyes.

The realization had set in, then, that this was probably a first for Rei. Given what Shuuichi knows of Rei's childhood, and all of the time he spent undercover, he rather doubts Rei has ever given much thought to Christmas, and, although he has undoubtedly seen the light displays downtown, Shuuichi suspects the intimacy of the moment they shared in their own home, simple as it was, had a much bigger effect on him.

Maybe next year Shuuichi can swing for mistletoe.

But that's a conundrum for next year; for now, he spies Rei making his way up the street. A frown tugs at Shuuichi's mouth when he notices the limp Rei tries to mask, but he pushes it away quickly, unwilling to upset Rei with his fretting, at least until they get back inside.

Rei offers him a small, tired smile when he gets close, and Shuuichi rises to meet him, taking the sack of groceries. Rei studies him for a second, a curious look in his eyes, and asks, "How long have you been out here?"

"Not long," Shuuichi answers as Rei presses his fingertips to his cheek, though he has no idea how long it's actually been.

Rei hums doubtfully. "Your cheeks are red from the cold." He averts his eyes, his smile growing despite his apparent embarrassment. "It's kind of cute. I don't get to see you like this often."

Unable to resist the pull of a shyly smiling Rei, Shuuichi turns his head to kiss his palm. The effect is immediate: a pretty pink blush crawls it's way up Rei's cheeks as he pulls his hand away like it's been burnt. Shuuichi grins; over two years together, and he's still this easily flustered – it's adorable. "Now we match," he says, leaning in to peck Rei's cheek next.

"We're outside," Rei fusses.

"There's nobody around to see us."

But that kind of answer isn't enough to settle Rei's nerves; instead, he sighs, exasperated, and says, "Let's just go inside."

Shuuichi acquiesces, stepping aside to let him through. "You first." The I'll catch you if you fall is implied, but he doesn't need to say it aloud for Rei to give him that dubious look.

"You're carrying the groceries," he argues, with a small gesture toward the bag Shuuichi took from him.

"The groceries can be replaced, if necessary."

Rei's brow furrows, his eyes wide, vulnerable. He sniffs, looks away again. Huffs, "Right," and steps past Shuuichi to hide the emotions threatening to surface. But Shuuichi can hear the quiver in his voice regardless.

He thinks, again, of the black velvet ring box sitting open on their dresser, of the engagement ring nestled safely inside. His proposal had… not gone over well. Rei hadn't outright rejected him, but he'd shut down, emotionally. Gone quiet. Told Shuuichi he needed to think.

He's done that a lot these last couple years, had to take time to think things through; Shuuichi is all too aware of the demons he's still wrestling with. He'd be lying if he said he didn't have his own, but Rei's presence makes things better, makes him feel more at ease. Sometimes he worries he may be having the opposite effect on Rei, but then Rei will curl up against his side in their bed, tangle their fingers together under the blankets, and lay Shuuichi's fears to rest.

So he's fairly certain he isn't the issue. Aside from that, Shuuichi's family adores Rei – even if Masumi hadn't been pleased with him at first – and Rei no longer needs to worry about what his superiors on the force will think (not that Shuuichi will ever voice that thought).

All of that only leads Shuuichi to believe that whatever Rei needs to think about has to do with Rei himself and his internal battles, which Shuuichi can only help with when Rei lets him in – and he doesn't do that often. So, instead, he's taken to reminding Rei, in his own way, of how much he loves him, whether it's acting as a steady presence at his back or leaving Rei's engagement ring out as a reminder of his feelings, for when, or if, Rei wants to accept it.

He takes it as a good sign that Rei hasn't moved it somewhere out of sight, or even just closed the box.

"You baked?" Rei asks, drawing him out of his thoughts as they step past the threshold of their apartment, the scent of cinnamon filling the air around them.

"Mm. Cookies. They're–" Shuuichi pauses there, casts a glance at the lumpy, misshapen treats cooling on the counter, "–cookies."

Rei gives him a baffled, yet amused look. "The cookies are cookies?" Shuuichi chooses not to respond to the teasing jab.

Once their shoes and coats and groceries are put away, Rei takes one of the cookies, slightly darker around the edges than Shuuichi would've liked, and breaks it in half, handing one piece off to him. "The taste matters more than the appearance, anyway," he insists, graciously sparing Shuuichi's ego any further blows. He must be more exhausted than he's letting on.

The flavor of the cookies, at least, is passable. He's still working on the rest.

Rei nestles against him once they finish their cookie, resting his head against Shuuichi's shoulder as Shuuichi wraps his arms around him. One hand settles at Rei's left hip, rubbing firmly at one of the spots he knows gives Rei trouble; Rei flinches at first, the painful ache a shock, but calms again soon after, adjusting.

"How does a hot bath sound?" Shuuichi murmurs, kissing Rei's hair. Rei nods and hums in agreement, saying nothing, so Shuuichi adds, "Want me to carry you?"

"Don't even think about it," his boyfriend grumbles, swatting at his chest. "I can walk."

Shuuichi chuckles, squeezing him. "I'll go run the water."

Their bathtub is just barely big enough to fit both of them, but it works for the purposes Shuuichi had wanted; he had specifically picked their apartment with that in mind, knowing that the occasional soak would likely help soothe Rei's muscles as he endures physical therapy and regains his strength. That he can also fit in there with Rei, even if it's a little cramped and uncomfortable for him, is a bonus.

(If he can convince Rei to move into a house, they'll get a bigger tub.)

Once the water is run and Rei is ready, Shuuichi helps him into the bath before quickly undressing and joining him, settling in behind him, his hand curling around Rei to massage at his aching thigh and hip. Rei sighs quietly, content, and leans back against his chest.

"Does it bother you," he starts slowly, sounding a bit hesitant, "that I haven't accepted your proposal?"

Shuuichi drops his head down to kiss Rei's shoulder. "Only because I know there are things going on inside your head that you won't talk to me about."

Silence falls over them for several minutes, a soft peace about them, despite the war no doubt raging in Rei's mind. Finally, he says, "I think I'd like to start working again soon."

It's not unexpected. He's been unemployed for close to two years, focused, instead, on his surgery and recovery, even if he hadn't had a choice in the matter.

"What does that look like, do you think?" Shuuichi asks carefully. Rei has stubbornly rejected, on multiple occasions, the idea of using a crutch or cane to get around, so it seems unlikely he'd have the stamina to handle a full day on his feet. He'll need something where he could go at his own pace.

Rei exhales slowly. "I'm not sure yet."

"We can take some time to figure it out," Shuuichi assures him. Rei lets out a noise of surprise, prompting Shuuichi to question him.

"I just thought… maybe you wouldn't want me working yet," Rei answers, tense.

Shuuichi presses a little more firmly with his fingertips, attempting to soothe the worries away. "As long as you don't try to push yourself too much all at once, I'm not opposed. I know you've been getting restless, being at home all the time." He'd taken over mid-week grocery runs for a reason, after all.

Rei doesn't reply to that verbally, but Shuuichi can feel the tension in his body drain away as he relaxes.

He's considered asking Rei if he'd like to leave the area, move somewhere further away from Beika, where the general public doesn't know him as Amuro Tooru. Perhaps that's something to bring up later, once Rei has had some time to think about what sort of job he wants.

For now, Shuuichi's content to just care for his lover as best he can, as much as Rei will let him.

3. What is the rarest rare pair (that you ship)?

Seeing as there is very little content of them I guess KazuRan and MasuRan count as rare pairs.

For another fandom I'll go with Shisui x Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries.

7. A non-canon ship that should be canon?

Since most of my ships are gay ships they would never ever be canon, but from a narrative standpoint AkAm would make so much sense (though I'm not sure I'd really want them to be canon because that means Aoyama is writing them and he is imo not the best at writing romance/relationships. So maybe I don't want any of my DetCo ships to actually be canon).

I'm not sure if that counts here, but m!Chrobin. I wish Fire Emblem Awakening gave us the possibilitie of gay marriage. It's not like they're not pushing the m!Chrobin agenda in every other game but Awakening (*looking at FE Engage and Heroes*) XD.

Thinking about it I have found another: Riza Hawkeye x Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood). I know and understand why they cannot get together, but in an ideal world they should be together. I love how their relationship is portrayed in the story and it's very clear that they love each other.

Wait hold on I have more Ash x Eiji from Banana Fish. The ending makes me incredibly sad. They both deserve happiness and they had it together but unfortunately it couldn't last. I'm counting it as non canon because even though the story made clear they love each other they never officially got to be together.

17. Is there a type of ship you always go for?

Looking through my ships, I don't think I have a specific type I go for. (But if that counts, I'd say as a queer person myself I mostly go for queer ships. Most straight romance doesn't really appeal to me.)

I guess I don't really ship characters that have nothing to do with each other in their stories.

I like for my ships to at least have some type of canon interactions.

27. Name a ship that deserved better in the end.

Well there is no end for Detective Conan so anything can still happen right? (<- delusional)

But I would say all of the canon couples definitely deserve better writing.

Fivan ;-; (Fedyor x Ivan) from the Shadow and Bone TV series. They are a conon couple in season one, they were the first ship I read about on ao3, they were so doomed if they had followed the story from the books. But unfortunately they were written out of the show after season 1 and after season 2 the show got cancelled.

I was incredibly excited to see them in season 2 and then incredibly disappointed when I learned that they wouldn't be there.

I will also mention Eiji x Ash from Banana Fish once again. Their ending makes me incredibly unhappy.
