Hera sleeps beside Kanan the night after Malachor. It’s less for his benefit - they gave him enough painkillers to knock him out - and more for her own. She didn’t share with anybody what the droid told her, about how close the blade had come to killing him.
He should have slept through the night, but Hera, who’s a light sleeper herself, keeps waking up to find him moving. He sits up, propping himself up on one elbow, and reaches out his hand. When she asks if he’s awake, he mumbles incoherently, and in a few seconds his breathing is deep and steady again.
He does this several times throughout the night. When she asks him about it the next morning, he doesn’t remember.
But at breakfast, she overhears him asking Ezra if he slept all right. Ezra shrugs. “I think I was having nightmares. But it’s funny, as soon as they started, it was like...I felt something, in the Force. Telling me it was all right. And they stopped.”
Imagine that Jim was a puppy who's mother abandoned him. He ends up at the shelter, where all his brothers and sisters are adopted (he was the runt). Puppy Jim is sad and angry, so he isn't very friendly to potential adopters and becomes one of the 'unwanteds' that the shelter workers think will be there forever. They put him in the back of the shelter next to another 'unwanted'--a grouchy cat named Bones. The workers are shocked when they come in the next day and Bones has someone gotten into Jim's cage--and the duo both pitch a fit whenever anyone tries to separate them. The two animals become each other's protectors, best friend and cuddle buddy.
The workers are in for another big surprise when, one day, a man named Christopher Pike comes in and walks past all the more amiable animals to that cage in back and announces he's taking Bones and Jim home.
