Venus in my rope
Heya, your rope photosets are some fantastic work and incredibly Aesthetic!
Given that, I was wondering if you have any good advice/recs on books/workshops/videos pertaining to that: I'm trying to get better at it but also lack coherent structure so far >.>
Thank you so much in advance.
Thank you so much! Rope is my absolute favorite thing.
As for advice I want to preface this with the fact that I only self tie floor rope. All my suspensions are done by experienced riggers or learning riggers under the supervision of experienced riggers. Rope suspension is edge play, even with experienced riggers it can lead to nerve damage (temporary and permanent), serious injury, and even death. Please make sure to assess your risk profile before jumping into it.
Even floor rope can cause harm if tensioned incorrectly or placed incorrectly. Remember that neck rope is a serious hazard and should not be attempted as you're starting out.
Always have safety shears on hand and be prepared to cut your rope if necessary. You can always get more rope, you can't get another limb.
This being said, I would like recommend starting with a solid single column tie. My personal favorite is the summerville bowline knot. It's great for floor rope and suspensions. Cotton rope is a great beginner rope and learning tool and costs less than other natural fiber ropes although I definitely prefer jute and hemp ropes myself.
If you're serious about learning to tie I would recommend reaching out to your local kink community and finding a rigger or rope studio you can take classes in. With pandemic in person things are difficult but the best learning is done in person that way the educator can correct any mistakes as they are being made. Fetlife is a good way to find out about what offerings are around you. (Although definitely be careful and vet folks before meeting up. It's always okay to ask for references)
Twisted Monk has some terrific tutorials that are available online and he sells some terrific kits that come with rope, safety sheers, and a tutorial dvd.
Shibari study is also a great online resource that has all sorts of tutorials (although I believe you need a subscription to access many of them).
The most important thing is to find what feels good for you. I love just moving the rope around myself and seeing what feels right, enjoying freestyle tying and seeing how my body moves within it.
I plan to learn to self suspend at some point but with the pandemic I don't get to see my rope friends and partners nearly enough.
I hope this answers your questions, if not give me a shout and I'll see if I can clarify. Also if I missed something important folks, feel free to drop a comment!
