Pages & Poles: dancing through literature - The Year of the Flood
"...and then Mordis called in on my videophone to see if I was okay: he missed me, because no one could work the crowd like me. 'Ren, you make them shit thousand-dollar bills,' he said..." - The Year of the Flood, Margaret Atwood
So, Norman Roswell performed for the second time ever last night. First time with my clothes on (lol!) and first time pole dancing. What a rush! What a great turnout! I’m taking a well-deserved lazy day to relax and blog about it. I feel so euphoric and inspired. I can’t wait to start working on more transitions, combos, basework ...and dare I say, perform again? Obviously, I am my own worst critic and feel like I made a lot of mistakes but it seems like the audience didn’t notice. Just powered through.
We had to perform as a character from a literary work of our choosing and as I had only 2 1/2 weeks to prepare, I went from working on Little Red Riding Hood from Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes to Ren from The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood. And I chose the the song (“D.D” by The Weeknd) only the day before. It felt pretty good. I’d like to see what I can do with more time.
The response was surprisingly positive. I felt very weird being the only one in pants and concentrating on floor and base work. My instructor called me “Queen of the Heel Clacks” though which felt awesome! All the dancers were amazing! We were all fangirl/boy/personing over each other and how different our styles were.
Kyle, @flyingfortressmusic, @cottonteeeth, Ryan, and Greis came out to support and I’m glad they were there to witness it. Thanks dudes! :)
Sneaky peak of what @normanroswell did tonight. 🙃 #pdwhatwhatwhat #pdfloorwork #floorfucker #latergram (at Jordin's Paradise Wellness Center)
