AWAKE
A blue-green glare from the one functioning streetlight outside filters through the gaps in the blinds and meets the orange glow from Gillen’s clock somewhere near the centre of my awareness. And I lie as still as I can, as still as death, staring at the ceiling and trying to release the pressure that holds me awake.
NIGHTMARE
And I kiss him again, because I need him to know I mean it. Without mind-altering frequencies, without the promise of blood on our hands, without any preceding nightmares, I need him to know that this is real for me and I’m telling the truth.
FULL
The interrogation suites are in the bowels of the building, which is appropriate since they’re usually full of shit. I include myself in that.
EASY
They’ll keep you looking perfect for as long as you want. Of course, they don’t force it on you, but they do their best to nudge you in that direction. I don’t take well to being nudged. I’m not that easy to move, so my face is still what it is and the only way it’s not going to be is if something fucks it up worse.
RELUCTANT HESITATION
Gillen doesn’t do second chances. He barely does first chances. He doesn’t do opportunities for remorse or apology or redemption. He does retribution, and he does it sharply, and without hesitation.
