not sure if tumblr audience would find this interesting… but i came across the japanese hayakawa junior mysteries (ハヤカワ・ジュニア・ミステリ) series recently. the series adapts christie works into light novels for younger readers.

i bought a copy of their version of the murder of roger ackroyd because it’s my favourite & because i wanted to see all the illustrations! so here’s a spoiler-free selection of some of my favourites scanned somewhat poorly via my phone. i think they’re really cool, my favourite’s either the first or second!

I am not okay with the assumptions Dr. Sheppard is making about Flora here. Men disapproving of women’s reading habits—and drawing specious conclusions therein—is an old story. As old as the novel (as a genre) is itself.

If he were as wise as he’d like us to believe, Dr. Sheppard would be more frighteneed of Flora reading The Mill on the Floss than anything more modern and less “out-of-date.” Classics are timeless after all, as are their lessons.

Quite a lot of people do not like Flora Ackroyd, but nobody can help admiring her. And to her friends she can be very charming. The first thing that strikes you about her is her extraordinary fairness. She has the real Scandinavian pale gold hair. Her eyes  are blue—blue as the waters of a Norwegian fiord, and her skin is cream and roses. She has square, boyish shoulders and slight hips. And to a jaded medical man it is very refreshing to come across such perfect health.
