[Moran; William] " you aren't a monster. "

William falters a moment in washing the blood from his hands, looking down into the depths of water stained red. As the ripples settle, he watches his own reflection come into focus, and his stomach twists at the emptiness he finds in his own gaze.
“... If not a monster, then what...?” His voice is a whisper, nearly choked back entirely— but this is Moran. Apart from William’s own brothers and Jack, he’s known him the longest, and through that, he’s seen the most of what the younger man tries so hard to hide from everyone else.
He’s meant to lead, and to do so properly, he must carry many more burdens than just his own. He shouldn’t put this sort of thing on the people he loves— Not when they believe in him so. But Moran is different, in a way. Moran would know, no matter how William fought to keep it to himself. There’s something about being known so deeply that makes William unwilling to even attempt.
Taking a deep breath, William lifts his chin to look up at the ceiling. His head spins, for a moment, and he feels as if he may hit the floor at any second, but when he lowers his head again, he turns to Moran with a smile trembling to life on his lips.
“I have yet to find a flaw in Nietzsche’s logic... no matter where I look in myself, lately, the abyss is all I see. Moran— may I ask you...? If not that, then what do you see?”
