Things you may not know about continuous flow chemistry
What are some of the advantages of flow chemistry?
Improved reaction times
Pressurization of flow reactors is simple (e.g. Asia systems can be pressurised to 300psi). This allows processes to be heated 100-150oC over their normal boiling point, resulting in 1000-fold quicker reaction rates. This is referred to as superheating.
Products that are cleaner
Excellent reaction selectivity is possible with flow reactors. Rapid diffusion mixing eliminates the problems that plague batch reactors. The huge surface area to volume ratio (1000x that of a batch reactor) allows for practically immediate heating or cooling and, as a result, precise temperature control.
