Edgar Bright “One-Sided”
You can find my masterlist in my bio!
I am so late with posting these, but I’m going to get all 7 done! This is Day 1 for Edgar Appreciation Week! The theme was Flowers! Please enjoy my short drabble!
The sun hung low, casting hues of orange across the horizon, spilling over the tree tops and over the soft green grass rustling in the wind. The well-worn path for once did not slow him down, instead beckoning him forward with open arms. The Jack of Hearts silently approaching his destination with a light heart. Clutched in his left hand, a bouquet of white roses freshly picked. Their scent swirling around him as a constant reminder of her. Edgar found his destination at the top of the hill, sinking to one knee. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?” Gloved finger carefully plucked the wilted flowers from the vase, placing each one tenderly against the plush glass as if they were made of thin china glass. At this hour of the evening, no one would bother him at the grave site. Most already gone about their business and wishing to avoid dusk, when spirits are said to roam. Edgar didn't mind the idea of being closer to the dead. He truly had believed that he would be among them soon enough. Until Alice. Imagining her inviting smile, tinkling laughter, outstretched hand, all asking for him and him alone, brought the faintest of smiles to his lips. "I do believe you would have adored her," Edgar spoke to the stone, feeling the cool granite through the stark white glove. Reaching his free hand into his breast pocket, he pulled out a small, velvet box. Fitting snugly within his fingers, the item weighed heavily. It held so many of his true emotions. His unbridled love for her. The warmth she brings to his life, the purpose. The desire to never allow harm to come to her ever again. His intentions to never let her out of his embrace again. "I'd nearly forgotten that this had been given to me," Edgar said, voice low as if whispering an important secret. "I never imagined that there would come a day where these blood-soaked hands would be washed clean and there would be the most incredible woman wanting nothing more than to spend her life by my side." Jade green eyes were reflected in the shimmering band adorned with a cut diamond. "Is this how you felt, Father? When you found my mother? No answer could come greet him. A soft hum escaped from his lips. "To have someone who accepts all your sins and chooses to love you unconditionally despite it all... it's nearly too much for me to bear." Clutching the material of his military jacket above his heart, his breath caught in his throat. "I feel as though my heart may burst out of my chest at any moment." A moment of silence passed again. "I wonder," Edgar mused, reaching once again to touch the stone before him. "Would you be proud of the man I've become? For bringing an end to the Bright Family's transgressions?" The wind blew gently around him, like a warm hug from beyond the grave. The Jack of Hearts knew that his father had heard all his words, even those unspoken in his heart. It filled him with a bittersweet feeling. "I promise that the next time I visit, I'll bring her as well, as my fiancé," Edgar said, composing his features. The white roses fit snugly in the vase by the grave, all except for one. The wind knocking it out each time he attempted to put it in. A light chuckle passed his lips. "Alright, I shall keep this one for her." As the Jack of Hearts descended the hill, heading away with a full heart and new resolve to ask for Alice's hand, he distinctly felt that someone was watching him leave. He didn't dare look back, instead choosing to believe that his father was smiling at him from afar, giving a silent blessing to Edgar's new path in life.
There was mentions of flowers in it, so it counts right? This was originally meant to be all angst but after the flood of angst, I decided to go with something a little more bittersweet than full on angst.
