Why womanism and not just feminism? I'm glad you asked. The problem with identifying solely as a feminist as a WOC is that you get outnumbered and out talked. The problems/viewpoints/interests of WOC get marginalized, minimized and trivialized fairly often. Feminisms' "face" if you will, is often White, liberal and monotone - and that monotone is not REALLY any more inclusive than the patriarchy. The real reason for exerting the womanist label is to acknowledge and encourage WOC to speak for themselves and their concerns. Let's be real - the life experiences of the following four hypothetical women - A) Black, upper middle class, cis professional B) White, lower middle class, trans, pink collar worker C) Asian, wealthy, cis lesbian D) White, middle class, cis, closeted, bisexual housewife are very unalike. Woman A and woman C probably find that race is the most important factor by which they are "prejudged" in the US. Woman B and woman D have significant social challenges, but White privilege is a given from the start of any social interaction. Since feminism addresses social challenges, a group dominated by White women tends to be largely unaware of its own privilege in any way that is not purely theoretical. Hence, womanism serves to reframe the discussion from the viewpoint of women who do not see the world from a starting point of defacto privilege.
