#Terrifying Tuesday for October
What’s wrong with being exposed to unshielded radiation as long as you get the right fitting shoe?
The Wisconsin Historical Society mentions that S.J. Brouwer began using a shoe fitting fluoroscope in 1919. Milwaukee became the center for this terrifying technology when the U.S. X-Ray Shoe Fitter, Inc of Milwaukee emerged as the leading manufacturer in the United States. Milwaukee was also the first to apply regulations to the use of these machines in late 1950 and by 1960 they were banned in 34 states; well after the effects of radiation exposure were known.
A novelty for those who stopped in once a year for a new pair of shoes but imagine the sales clerk who worked around the machine regularly. Or the young children who put their growing tootsies directly into the radiation once or twice a year! AAAAAHHHHH!!!
You can still see these machines in several museums across the country thankfully none of them are working!
The advertisement shown above appeared in the back of the 1922 Cumtux, the Milwaukee Downer College annual, which is available to researchers in our Reading Room Library.
